    1. [KYBARREN] IN CLOSING MONDAY, 13 JUNE 2011, TIP OF THE WEEK
    2. Sandi Gorin
    3. Eventually, I will return to the puzzler of the week; I'm getting closer. The yard sale is over and have the auction of my Mom's house Saturday and a lot of paperwork to go. Thanks for bearing with me! As a little tip of the week! When you are looking for your ancestors on the census records starting with the 1850 census (the first one that listed names and in order as they were questioned), do you just look for your ancestor and ignore everyone living around them? On the earlier censuses, it is a little more difficult as many census records showed the names in a semi-alphabetical order but it would pay to scan those also. You might be missing some important clues. Two of the most obvious are the following: 1 - When a man had children; he often deeded acreage of his land to his son or daughter when they married or as he neared death. Check several houses (farms) around your ancestor and jot down the names. Are these individuals the right age to possibly be a married child? If you have the ability, run the deeds on a few of these neighbors and see if a connection pops up. 2 - Many times, in earlier days, entire neighborhoods moved together to a new area. They could be members of the same church and coming here to establish a new church; friends from the old neighborhood. Many times when people moved from Virginia or other states, they came in wagon trains together - for safety, for friendship - and for family. Some of those other unknown people in the wagon train could be married daughters and their husbands; parents, grandparents, cousins ... So, I would recommend that you write down or photocopy those neighbors and stick them in a file as a ?? to be investigated on a rainy day. Have a great day! 1. [KYBARREN] IN CLOSING MONDAY, 6 JUNE 2011 - AND A TIP
    2. Sandi Gorin
    3. Good Monday morning! I appreciate your patience with me as I am still deeply involved in settling the estate of my late beloved Mother. I am meeting myself coming and going and am not answering all e-mails quite as promptly. Oh to be in my 40s again! Now for a little tip of the week. For many of us, we've been digging into the past of our family tree for many years. Things have changed a lot for those of us "old timers." Records that were unavailable to us in the beginning might be popping up on the internet or in newly published books. We might have scraps of paper stuck in files, some totally undocumented as to their source ... we forgot to write down where and when we found that information. Maybe we have some brick walls or lost lines that we just gave up on. So, when you're bored; when it's too hot, too cold, too stormy, etc. to get out and research, take some time to go back over your family tree. Revisit the data you have collected and double-check it. See if you can find your source for the information. Check on those brick walls - has something you found later answered the question and you had just forgotten to go back and double check it? Have you tried tracing the female ancestors - they will often give you a lot of clues to the male line. Double check your conclusions reached years ago; could you have assumed the wrong thing, picked up the wrong person thinking they were part of your family tree? I've found errors from the past in my records and when I double-checked them, it opened up new research. Just an idea - Sandi
