    1. [KYBARREN] IN CLOSING MONDAY, 18 JULY 2011 - PUZZLER
    2. Sandi Gorin
    3. Good morning on yet another week of high temperatures and for many of you, a horrible dry spell! I would like to recommend a free site to you if you haven't found it it. I spent much of the weekend actually working on my own family trees (rare anymore!) and I checked out a site I hadn't been looking at for some time - Find-A-Grave. (Findagrave.com) This site, which is user contributed, has millions of headstones contributed on thousands of surnames, all across the USA. If a stone is found, the page will show a photograph of the stone (not all have pictures), the transcription of the stone, the cemetery where it is located and many times extra information such as parents, obituary or other data. I found about 75 stones recorded for the surname Gorin that tied into our family alone. Many of these I had - but had lost the name of the cemetery. If information is missing by the individual who took the photograph, the reader can add a note to the contributor (there is a link to that individual) and provide the missing information. One can search by cemetery name or individual's name What is an extra added touch is that you can add flowers to the grave - a link takes you to a variety of flowers, pick one and click on it; that flower will appear on the page. This is especially nice if it's a close family member and you want to leave a flower and/or a note about them. No charge for this. Now - the puzzler. Charlie has posted this week's puzzler - please give it a try. In it, I am speaking of a widow who has remained a widow; she has NOT re-married. Have a great week! 1. [KYBARREN] DATES FOUND IN WILLS
    2. Sandi Gorin
    3. As Friday has again arrived, I want to close out the week with another tip. When you read through a copy of a will you will find three dates listed. Perhaps someone who has transcribed the will has not included all three dates, but they can be very important and why we need to see the original if at all possible. Date 1 is the date the will was written by the deceased. This date can be indicated either at the beginning of the will or at the end. It will read "on such and such a date" or "given under my hand on such and such a date." You know he or she was alive on that date. Date 2 is the date that the will was "acknowledged" in court. This date will normally be underneath the signatures of the deceased and the signature of the county clerk. It is normally just a sentence or so saying that this was acknowledged by the county clerk. It could also be found on the outside of the "packet" as it was called which involved all the paperwork involved in settling the estate. Date 3 is the date when the will was recorded by the clerk and entered into the records of the county. Sometimes these wills were acknowledged and recorded rather promptly; some times there was a lengthy time period between the date written by the deceased and the recording. And - sometimes the researcher can find a clue between the dates. If you're trying to find the death date of your ancestor and no record of his death exists, this will pinpoint the date sometime between the original date and the recording date. Also, if family members are mentioned in the will, the researcher can get close to finding the date a marriage or death has taken place. For a daughter, she might be referred to as "my daughter Sarah Jones" when the will was written, but she signs as Sarah Smith." Bingo - she has married. Or you might see the term "my late son John Jones" This would indicate to you that when the man wrote the will, this son was already deceased. A man might leave property to his wife, Mary Smith ... but by the time the papers are finalized, she signs as Mary Black. She has remarried after his death. There are many examples of clues one can find if you read between the lines. A lot can happen between the first and last dates - marriages, births, deaths or moves from the area. Read them carefully! As an aside - I need some more guessers to the finally "reactivated" puzzlers. Only about seven people have guessed ... come on guys! The bride was handsomely attired and looked really handsome, and is one of Cumberland's most amiable young ladies, while the groom is one of our most enterprising and industrious young men. After the conclusion of the marriage services, the happy couple in company with several friends, started immediately for Mr. James Fishback's, a brother-ion-law, of the Grove, near your city, where there was a very magnificent supper, awaiting their arrival. The supper was gotten up in complete style, consisted of deliccies [sic] of all kinds and descriptions, too numerous to mention, which every person partook of very freely indeed, and enjoyed most heartily. The ladies of that household deserves great credit for attending to the culinary department, in the manner they did. We wish the newly married couple a long and pleasant life, and may they at last, enter in the home of eternal bliss. Respectfully, D. W. J. (2 Jan 1879 issue). WARREN CO: All Dead. (Rip-e-to in Warren County). The sad news was received her a short time ago of the death of Mrs. Fannie Combs at her home in Perthe, Sumner county, Kansas. Mrs. Combs was the daughter of Mr. Eli Rasdall who moved from Smiths Grove to Kansas in 1882. Mrs. Rasdall was Miss Bee Clayton, of the Beaver Creek(k) country, southwest of Glasgow, KY. When they moved to Kansas they had seven living children, all daughters. All of them have died in the last ten years. Mrs. Combs who died May 6, was the last one. The seven sisters are all buried in a row in the Perthe cemetery. All but one of them married and some of them left children. Mr. and Mrs. Rasdall have the sympathy of their many friends and kinfolks in Kentucky in their sad bereavement. (16 June 1897). Mr. Will Ray, of Oakland Station, and Miss Nellie Jenkins, of Warren county, were married in the parlors of the Maxwell House, in Nashville, Thursday of last week. Mr. Ray is one of the best known young farmers and dealers in fine stock in Warren county. He is besides, one of the cleverest of men and a thorough gentlemen. His bride is a most charming and accomplished young lady. The young couple have the congratulations and best wishes of a host of friends in their marriage. (16 June 1897 issue). HART CO: Mr. John Albert and Mrs Mary Crowe, and Mr. George Potter and Miss Alice Wood, all of Hart county, eloped to Hart county and were married a few days ago. Her remains were interred in the graveyard on the farm of her father, Mr. Jimmie Walton, near Goodnight, last Sunday in the presence of a large concourse of sorrowing relatives and friends. After appropriate funeral services by Rev. R. H. Spillman, on Sunday afternoon, the remains were interred in the family graveyard. Miss Seay was about sixty-one years old and had been a consistent member of the Methodist church fifty years. Since her mother's death thirty-two years ago, Miss Seay has lived with and cared for her aged father who is still living at the advanced age of ninety-four years. She faithfully discharged her duty to her father in his old age, watching over and caring for him with all the tender solicitude a mother bestows upon a child. (22 Apr 1896 issue). 1. [KYBARREN] SEVERAL OF YOU HAVE HAD YOUR E-MAIL ADDRESSES HACKED
    2. Sandi Gorin
    3. Just a heads up. Several of you in the past 2 days have had their e-mail addresses hacked and now that address is sending out spam to other names in their address books. When this happens, I will write you privately to alert you. You will need to change your e-mail address. I also have put those hacked addresses on Moderation as far as the list is concerned so the spam will not go out to everyone on the list. So far, they have just come to me and many others names at the same time from your address book. This means that you will continue to receive mail at your hacked address until you change it, but cannot post to the list. Please let me know when your address is changed and I will subscribe you manually at the new address and remove the bad one. Thanks, Sandi Sandi's Puzzlers: http://www.gensoup.org/gorinpuzzles/index.php Sandi's site: http://ggpublishing.tripod.com/

    1. [KYBARREN] IN CLOSING MONDAY, 11 JULY 2011 - PUZZLER RETURNS!
    2. Sandi Gorin
    3. Good morning from a very warm south central Kentucky. First - I am abstracting from a post made by our friend, Bill Utterback, who manages many rootsweb lists and is one of our list members also. He said it better than I can - thanks Bill! "... RootsWeb has taken their SORBS (Spam & Open Relay Blocking System) system off line and are experimenting with other spam blockers, given the fact that SORBS was causing as many problems as it was preventing. They have advised the list hosts that they are experimenting with other spam blockers, and, as a result, an address may get unsubscribed here and there which should have not have been unsubbed. and there may be a bit of spam creep onto the lists as they experiment with new ways of blocking this pesky nuisance. Anytime that we see a message that has nothing but a URL in the message body, the only action we should take is to just delete the message, and *do not* click on the URL. Most of the URL's are harmless advertising, but some of them will cause your machine to become infected with malware, which will send the same message to all of the people in your address book, and if those folks click on it, it happens again, over and over, which makes it self-perpetuating. But these minor quirks are well worth our patience, I think, since SORBS had become a really serious problem for all list hosts particularly, and for some people using certain ISP's, or even just certain, individual addresses within an ISP. Hopefully, we're through with SORBS problems." If you suddenly stop receiving posts from these two lists, send me an e-mail privately and I will re-sub you. Lastly - life is almost slowing down for me and I am starting the puzzlers again. Charlie has posted the puzzler for this week and it's an easier one to get back into the routine again. To take a guess, click on the URL in my signature line called Sandi's Puzzlers. This will take you to a web site where you see the puzzler and will be able to enter your answer. Please enter your e-mail address correctly - it will come directly to me, no one else will see it. I try to respond to each guess. Have a good day, stay cool and discover something about your family tree this week!
