Author: annjleger Surnames: Redford Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.kentucky.counties.barren/21007/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I am putting together a family history book and found Francis Marion Redford's 1927 obit here. It mentions that he was a grocer with his son Louis, in Glasgow, KY. I am looking for any information on him, the store, or when he was a dep. sheriff in Barren Co. This may have been between 1900 and 1925. Here's his obit, as found here in 2004 "Mr Frank M Redford died at the home of his niece, Mrs. Chas. J. Lewis, on East Washington Street, yesterday afternoon from heart trouble, at the age of seventy-eight years.Mr. Redford was a life long citizen of Glasgow and Barren County, and for the past quarter of a century has been a groceryman, well known and wellliked. His wife died only a few months ago, and his last remaining sister, Mrs. Parthenia Ford, died Monday of last week. He is survived by three sons: Messrs Harry Redford of Cincinnati, Geo. M. and Louis P. Redford of this place. Mr. Redford has been prominent in the life of Glasgow for almost his entire life; no one had more friends, and we believe we can say he had no enemies. He was a member of the Christian church and was faithful to his duty. He was perhaps as well known as anyone in the county and as popular. The funeral will be held Friday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the home of Mr L . P. Redford on Maple Driveway conducted by Rev. T. H. Alderson, assi! sted by Rev. Piercy and Rev Easley. Burial will follow in the Glasgow Cemetery." 1. [KYBARREN] CURD
    2. Sandi Gorin
    3. Thanks to Wendy, most of the mystery is solved. This leads to another piece of the puzzle which is yet unsolved. If the Curds and Quigley's - Black families - lived in the Hiseville area (per the 1900 census), only one funeral home was operating in Glasgow at the time - Hatcher and Saddler. They did black and white burials (as does A F Crow & Son Funeral Home); the black funeral home, Watts, did not open until the 1940s. I looked at H&S's burials and found something interesting. A lot of the family is buried at Curd Cemetery - also known as Harlow's Chapel and Sam Slaughter Cemetery. Richard and wife are not there, only their daughter. Now this little unnamed girl died in July 1907, but she is not buried there, at least there is no stone. But, the other daughter of Richard is buried there and she is named Will Alice. She is shown with no birth date given, but died on 6 Jan 1903. So, I checked Hatcher & Saddler's records and found her ---- but her date from the funeral home register shows her dying 6 January 1906, age 3 years. She is shown as the daughter of Richard (Dick) and Puss Quigley and lived 5 miles north of Glasgow. Dr. J S Durrett was the attending physician. She was shown buried 7 Jan 1906 at the Haiden Curd Cemetery. So - if the other little girl died in 1907, she is not recorded and there is a 3-year difference in the death dates of her sister. There could possibly be an error in the reporting of the case, but it would be doubtful and the funeral home records at this time were recorded in huge volumes, in chronological order. The stone could also have been miscopied. Genealogy can be confusing, can't it? Thanks again Wendy! 1. [KYBARREN] CURD VS CUMBERLAND TELEPHONE CO
    2. Sandi Gorin
    3. I've just stumbled across something interesting - maybe someone can solve a mystery. In the book "The American and English Annotated Cases, Containing the important cases selected from the current American, Canadian and English Reports, Edited by William M. McKinney, Davis S. Garland and H. Noyes Green, Volume XVI, Edward Thompson Company, Northport, L. I. N. Y, 1910 is found the following on page 1244: In Curd v. Cumberland Telephone, etc. Co. (KY), 119 S. W. 746, it appeared that the plaintiff's little sister died at her house in Louisville and that the plaintiff, being without means to buy a coffin or transport the remains to the child's home in Barren county, telephoned her father in Barren county, telling him of her sister's death and asking him to send her money to buy a coffin and pay the transportation expenses of the remains. The plaintiff's father entered into a contract with the defendant's agent to transmit by wire to the plaintiff the necessary funds, but by some mistake the money was delayed in transit, and as a consequence the shipment of the corpse was delayed for one day. The court held that the plaintiff could not recover damages for her mental suffering on account of the delay in delivering the money to her in Louisville, for the reason that the telephone company had no contract with the plaintiff, and that the contract between the plaintiff's father and the telephone company was not made for her benefit, she being merely her father's agent in Louisville to carry out his instructions as to the burial of the child. But see Cumberland Telephone, etc. Co. vs Quigley, 129 Ky. 788, 112 S. W. 897, wherein the father of the plaintiff in Curd v. Cumberland Telephone, etc., CO., supra, was held to be entitled to recover damages from the telephone co. Now ... In quickly scanning the cemetery records, I find no female Curd dying in this time-frame. None of the cases were dated; the last heading, many pages back was in May of 1909, and of course the book was published in 1910. No first name is given to Mr. Curd, or to the sister of the child who died. The death would have occurred before KY issued death certificates. Hatcher & Saddler Funeral Home was operating at this time and did Curd burials, but no female black or white during this time frame. Who was she? We asked for copies of every document on every Bailey spelled every way 1790 and all prior years. I also live fairly close to the best genealogy library in the Country( one of the best), in Independence, Mo. All of the Bailey research we do is transcribed and posted to the Surname list. If someone Googles a Bailey name, chances are somewhere on that search is research done by Mary Bailey, Karen Price, and myself, and posted by one of us. 1. [KYBARREN] ALL THAT FANCY WORDING
    2. Sandi Gorin
    3. There are several places where a researcher might be shocked, surprised or thrilled with the wording of a document - and which we often have to take with a grain of salt! 1 - Biographies. I've spoken of this before of course. Biographies were normally written by the individual himself (or a descendant) and what was said was taken as is by the publisher of a biographical work. Even a plain old country boy could turn into a wealthy, wise and acclaimed citizen. Now - some were true of course! 2 - Obituaries. In the past, before obituaries became "cut and dried" in their wording, family members or friends often wrote the obituaries that appeared in the local paper. Terms like "universally loved" always breaks me up - I'm sure everyone in the universe knew the individual! Terms like pious, loving, untiring, etc. is often in the eye of the beholder. Sometimes the editors of newspapers knew the deceased individual and made the obituary more "flowery." "A large concourse of mourning friends and neighbors" is another term used frequently as well as a description of those remaining. I still like to read this type of obituary however ... it's much more personal. 3 - divorces. Oh yes; if you've ever read through the petitions for divorce in the past, you would think the offending spouse was the most evil, cruel and heartless individual that ever walked the earth! In the past, the divorcing parties seldom appeared in person before a judge; depositions were taken from them and anyone who could contribute to the cause - neighbors, relatives and it appears sometimes, the neighborhood gossip. The deposition was read before the judge by the lawyer and there was a set pattern to the wording which usually guaranteed that the divorce would be granted. "Cruel and inhumane, deserted me without food or provisions, departed my bed, treated me with disdain" etc. etc. When one reads the testimony of the offended party, one's heart would break and you become convinced that the husband (or wife) was the most despicable person on earth. Then, when you read the testimony of that horrid man or woman ... oops, he/she becomes the saint! So, don't be convinced too quickly who is the offending party! Family members (parents, siblings) would always make it sound worse that it might have been ... but again, it might have been that bad! 4 - pension applications. When old soldiers applied for a pension from the government, they really, really, had to prove their need for a pension. Suddenly they were infirm; had only one milk cow and a dozen children running around barefoot; the wife was weak and useless; the farm was falling down ..... I have one distant relative who filed for pension increases every year and dragged dozens of doctors in to testify through 2 counties. At his last application he had 24 diseases as a result of the war and likely drove the County Clerks insane with his annual application. We know they likely deserved a pension but, with the help of a lawyer or even the clerk, even a hangnail became a life threatening condition. The dear old soldier wanted that pension even if he had to turn his loving spouse into "mentally confused" and his children as uneducated and poor and wandering the streets begging for food. Now, again, some pension applications were absolutely true ... but know that many "enhanced" their condition. So, when reading through these, have the salt shaker handy just in case (for that grain of salt!) and dig deeper to see if the statements were true! (25 March 1896 issue). HART CO: Miss Miriam VAUGHAN, aged seventeen, died at the home of her father in Horse Cave last Friday, after an illness of only three or four days. She was the daughter of Squire R. V. Vaughan, one of the most substantial citizens of Horse Cave. METCALFE CO: We take pleasure in announcing the marriage of Mr. Anthony Fraser, of this place, to Miss Mollie Bryant, of Willow Shade, last Wednesday. The ceremony was pronounced at the residence of the bride's father. Mr. Fraser is characterized for honor, truth and uprightness, and is an entertaining farmer, and has many friends. The bride is widely known as one of Metcalfe's best teachers. She is a young woman of charming personality. (from the Edmonton news to the Times, 13 My 1896 issue). Mr. Frank T. ROYSE died at his home Saturday night, near Sulphur Well. He had been drinking Monday and Tuesday, and Tuesday evening, Dick DAVIS who lives near Knob Lick, heard a noise and going in that direction he found Mr. Royse in an unconscious condition. He took him to his house and summoned assistance, and Wednesday morning Mr. Royse was removed to his home. The doctors pronounced that he had taken morphine and he remained in an unconscious condition until death claimed him. He didn't take the morphine with a suicidal intent as it is supposed, as he was in the habit of using the drug. He was a man of high standing and of a good family. He leaves a wife and six children. (13 May 1896 issue). MONROE & METCALFE CO: Mrs. Laura A. Perkins was born in Monroe County, Ky., April 23, 1873, and died at the home of her father, Squire J. H. McMURTREY, at Summer Shade, Ky., February 17th, 1896. The deceased spent the greater part of her life at Summer Shade, and was educated in the schools of that village. Possessed of a generous and social nature, she grew up loved and respected by all who knew her, and the place made vacant by her death will be hard indeed to fill. About six years ago she made a profession of religion and united with the Baptist church, of which church she was a consistent member until death. Jan. 11, 1894 she was united in marriage with Charles A. Perkins. The death angel carried away their only child, a babe of four months, about a year ago. About a year ago her health began to fail; her finall illness lasted eight weeks. Though she suffered much, she bore her afflictions with Christian fortitude and submission, and expressed herself as fully assured of a bright reward beyond cares and sufferings of this life. The last several weeks of her illness were spent at the home of her parents, that she might better receive the tender care of her mother and sisters. Her remains were laid to rest in Summer Shade cemetery, in the presence of a large congregation of sorrowing relatives and friends, Feb. 18th. She leaves a bereaved husband, father and mother, sisters and brothers, and a large circle of friends to mourn her early departure. (poem follows). (25 Mar 1896 issue).
