Thus, the word must have spread. Plus, many Rev. War Vets were given land in this general area of KY. Some sold their rights and some settled on their land. The Virginia farm land was beginnng to get worn out. Plus many had large families and the eldest usually inherited the home place and the others had to go elsewhere. You should plan a visit - it is beautiful country. You may know Kentuckians go barefoot because they are on Holy ground. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I am trying to get an idea of what the area was like, and what would have attracted my ancestors, who moved from Virgina. James Redford moved to Barren Co., around 1800 with his family, from Virginia. In Virginia, many of the Redfords owned farms, so I am guessing the area is agricultural (I have never been to the area). Any advice is welcome! Thank you -- A. I'm not much closer than I was in solving this "mystery". Elaine Branham on the list and I have been working and here is all we've found. We may never know what happened unless some of the family knows! 9 Sept 1846 Sara(h) Angeline McKinney born in Butler Co, d/o James & Liddy Hopkins McKinney/McKenney 26 Apr 1873 She married William Francis (Frank) Peay in Butler Co. 1880 Both are on the census for Butler CO. 1891 William Francis Peay dies in Butler Co, buried Big Muddy Cemetery 1895 According to one family tree; she marries Peter S McKinney in Butler Co. Now - this would have been his 3rd wife; cannot find the marriage record 1900 Census - Peter S. is living in a Gaskey household, shown as WIDOW. This casts doubt on the marriage. 1900 Census - Sarah not found. 1905 Peter S. McKenney dies, supposed to be buried in Big Sandy Cemetery in Butler Co. No such cemetery that I can find - there is a Sandy Creek and a Big Muddy. He is not shown in either. 1910 Sarah is listed in the census as a widow in Butler Co. 1920 Sarah is listed in the census as a widow in Butler Co. 19 May 1923 - Sarah dies in Muhlenburg Co KY, buried at Big Muddy Cemetery in Butler Co. Her death certificate shows the informant was Arthur Peay. Her name is shown as Sara and Sarah; Angaline and Angeline, but is the same person. I doubt if she was married again to this Peter S. McKinney/McKinney; I think he was possibly a relative - but I might be wrong! We tried! Thanks for all the e-mails and help! I've been receiving some wonderful guesses, but ... still figuring. Her husband pre-deceased her, he died in 1891. I don't think cremation was a possibility back this far. Why was she living in Muhlenberg Co ... on the outs with her family; a new love at her age? If anyone is on the Butler Co list, would you make a post there - surely someone has come across this before. This is a brick wall I think we'd all like to know the answer to and knock down!! Maybe it was her sense of humor - maybe she wasn't ready to go yet!!! Thanks, Sandi Sandi's Puzzlers: http://www.gensoup.org/gorinpuzzles/index.php Sandi's site: http://ggpublishing.tripod.com/
I love puzzles in genealogy and I think I've found one that takes the cake. There is a tombstone at Little Muddy Cemetery in Butler Co that has the most unusual inscription. It reads: Sarah Angeline Peay Sept 9, 1845 - May 19, 1923 Buried by mistake Yes - that's on the stone! I looked up her death certificate; she did die on that day in Muhlenberg Co KY of old age and pneumonia and it shows her buried at Little Muddy in Butler Co. Her husband is also buried there beside her and many other relatives. Now - didn't she want to be buried by her husband and with the rest of the family at Little Muddy? or Heavens forbid - wasn't she dead when they buried her? I would love to understand this mystery; it's the strangest I've ever run into!! Maybe there's a story out there somewhere, I don't have access to any newspapers of that time frame. Just had to give you something to think about on a Monday! Sandi Sandi's Puzzlers: http://www.gensoup.org/gorinpuzzles/index.php Sandi's site: http://ggpublishing.tripod.com/
During the past few weeks, I've seen maybe 10 of our subscribers whose e-mail address has been "hacked". Messages are sent out to everyone in their address book with either just a URL to lick on in the message, or a plea for money, or a money-making scheme. Whatever you do, DON'T click on that URL. I am including in this message a tip from someone I respect very much in the computer world, Kim Komando. She is a marvelous guru of information; I listen to her radio program every Saturday and check her website frequently. She is trustworthy ... and I don't get a cent from recommending her. The link below will take you to her website where she discusses what to do if your e-mail account is hacked, why it's done and what you can do to protect yourself. When you get some spare time, I'd recommend reading through the article. We've all be told this many times but it can still confuse our genealogical research. Ages. I'm sure you've all run into variances in ages on census records and we've talked about that before. Every ten years we should be ten years older, right? Well, not always on the census records. It depended on who the census taker asked sometimes. We all get a chuckle at the lady of the household who only ages 5-6 years every 10 years. Grandma might have been asked and her memory is fading. A child could have been asked and every adult is old to them. The census taker might have guessed if there was no one to ask and he didn't want to go back out to see the family again or he might not have heard the person correctly. Or he wrote it so sloppily that we transcribed it wrong. But, there are other times when the ages can be off. Obituaries can be wrong too, especially the older ones which were often written by family members, neighbors or friends and praising the deceased. Old John might have looked 95 but he was only 80 and been aged by working out in the sun too long! Family members might have told the undertaker the wrong age or date of birth while in shock. And, the newspapers could have typeset it wrong. We all can find errors in published obituaries - I gave my grandfather's name wrong when my Mom recently died and didn't catch it until I saw it in the paper. I was really kidded by the funeral home who know that I'm a genealogist! And, in older days, people didn't always know how old they were! As strange as it seems today, families didn't keep a lot of records unless they made an entry in an old family Bible. Those Bibles could have been lost over the years or the person making the entry could have done it "after the fact" many years later. Tombstones can be wrong too. I have mentioned before of finding several times a different date of birth or death on a headstone than what is recorded in a funeral home record, a death certificate or newspaper obituary. Maddening? Yes! So, as with many details we record of our ancestor, there can be variances in dates. If there are differences in the records, I try to note this on my records for that individual. For some time, I'm going to run a different kind of post. I have published several index books covering some of the almost 400 books I've published over the years for Barren, Hart, Edmonson, Warren, Metcalfe and Monroe Counties. It's hard to know if you family name appears in the source records or in my books. So, I am going to list the names that appear. Again, this is not complete. This series involves only 15 of my books. I will give you first a list of the books and each book will have a number associated with it. Keep this list! I will then list the names found in those books with a number after it. That number refers back to the list of books with the number associated with it. Let's give it a try!
