Dick: (I am copying this reply to KYLANDERS as well as VAPWILLI since I posted a copy of my query to them orginally -- if they want to see a copy of your post they can e-mail me or you for it) I can't thank you enough for all the information you have taken the time to share. I will digest it over the next week or so and see if I can add anything. In the meantime, if I can help you with anything please don't hesitate to let me know (I am now focusing on Davis/Milton families in 19th century Kentucky -- especially in around the Bluegrass counties but I have accumulated some data on the Milton/Meltons in 17th and 18th century Virginia. Regards, Byron Marshall (son of Bessie Milton, great grandson of Melissa Davis Milton) p.s. One note regarding you comment on the spelling of Milton/Melton. It is a cross (or a dot?)that those of us with this lneage must bear -- there is no uniformity in the spelling. For the first 2 centuries, the "i"s became "e"s and vice versa without warning. I have even heard of both spellings used in the same document (although I do not have an example handy). Once my mother's lineage arrived in Nelson Co., Kentucky around 1800 they seem to use the "i" almost all the time but that does not mean court clerks and census-takers did. Thus it is always necessary to check the indices for both (unless of course there is a soundex).
