Marsha Hamilton at MsHamilton@kih.net Kentucky Taken from "Roots & Branches" by Joyce Stover. DESCENDANTS OF FRANCIS MURPHY Francis Murphy was orn in VA ca. 1760-1770 and died before 6 Dec 1833 in Cumberland Co., KY. He first showed up in Henry Co., VA personal tax lists in 1796. In 1802, he was deeded the balance of his father's land, and he continued to pay taxes on 239 ac. of land in Henry Co., VA until 1821. According to the obituary of Francis' son Ruel, Francis moved to KY in 1818. Ruel Murphy's obituary also stated that Francis was a soldier in the American Revolution and served under General Washington. Francis Murphy was married to Nancy Ann, whose last name is unproven, to the best of my knowledge. However, World Family Tree CD No. 8, Tree No. 2576 says that her last name was Maupin, and that she was the daughter of Jesse Maupin and Lucy Jones. Jesse Maupin was said to be the son of Daniel Maupin. Children of Francis and Nancy Ann Murphy were: 1. Ruel Murphy, b. 7 May 1799 in Henry Co., VA, d. 7 Jun 1885 in Memphis, Clark Co., MO, m. Elizabeth Gearhart, dau. of Peter Gearhart and Obedience Alexander in 1821. She was b. 30 Sep 1802 in VA, d. 8 Oct 1880 in Clark Co., MO. His obituary states that he was a supporter of Abraham Lincoln and that he had freed his slaves prior to the Emancipation Proclamation and had set them up on one of his farms. His obituary also states that he migrated to MO in 1836 and was one of the first settlers in Clark Co., MO. 2. Foster Murphy, d. prior to 11 Apr 1845 when his settlement was recorded, m. Phoebe ______. His widow later m. Curtis Blackwood, who was appointed guardian of the two underage children, Missouri and Louisa. Missouri m. John W. Hunter and Louisa m. S. T. Hunter. 3. Bruce or Brice Murphy. 4. John Murphy. 5. Nicholas Murphy. 6. Missouri Murphy, m. Thomas Binns. She evidently d. before 1850, as Thomas was listed with children, Martha, b. ca. 1832; and Foster, b. ca. 1838. Thomas is listed in 1860 as living in the household of William B. and Nancy Thurman. Next column: Descendants of James Murphy, Jr. I hope this is of some help to some of you researchers. ============================================= Posted by: Li Griffin Date: November 13, 1999 at 06:01:32 In Reply to: NANCY MURPHY - Kentucky by Marsha Smith-Hamilton of 8069 Now I am very curious to find a connection to my Murphy - Brice Elkins Murphy b. abt 1837 ? d. 1912 Anderson Co., KY. m.
