I'm happy to say after a visit to Richmond in Ray Co., Mo last week, I was able to prove Harriet Ellis Butts was the daughter of Jesse and Polly Phillips Ellis. Polly was Jacob's daughter. I went through the Ray county wills for several surnames. When I got to the large packets for Thomas Phillips, I hit the jack pot. Thomas died lin 1849 leaving half his estate to wife Winney and half to siblings and nieces and nephews. Winney remarried twice. First to a Reaves then to a Darneal. When she died in 1871 in Ray County, a lot of her dead husband Thomas Phillips relatives were contacted for settlement of Thomas Phillips estate which must have drug on for over twenty years or it was in a trust till Winney died. Anyway, I looked at over a hundred pieces of papers in the two will packets for Thomas. One of the many receipts showed that Thomas's sister Polly Ellis deceased was entitled to $1,219.80 settlement. Her children were entitled to her share. They were named as Mrs Thos O Butts, Jackson Ellis, Morgan Ellis, and a deceased son Moses T Ellis. Another letter came from Omaha, Douglas County, Nebraska dated Jan 1874 listed the children of the deceased Moses Ellis. They were awarded Moses share. They were William D Ellis and Mary L Ellis Haney. Her husband was Wm C Haney. I thought you would like this update and have more details on the children of Jesse and Polly Ellis if you are interested. You can email me jdwhisler@juno.com
