    3. How about Catholic baptismal records for Spencer (or perhaps Anderson) Co. around 1844. My great-grandfather was George Newman born to a Catholic family (f=George, m=Mary Hagan) and it seems a shame around Christmas not to know where he was born or whether he was properly baptized! 3. My ggggg-grandfather, James Baker, was born in VA ca 1766 and died in Mercer or Anderson Co. KY sometime around 1845. He reportedly was a drummer boy during the Revolutionary War, and received a 200-acre land grant for it in Garrard Co. (where he first lived with his father), or in Mercer or in Anderson -- but I haven't personally seen any documentation on this. After searching for James' connubial companion(s) without success for several years, we (some of his other descendants and I) have just received unconfirmed information from another cousin that he married his second wife, Jenny Jameson, in Mercer County KY on Aug 24, 1813. I have a copy of the Ison-Conover "Mercer County Marriage Bonds and Consents, 1811-1830," but can't find anything on James and Jenny. If anyone has anything at all on them, has Mercer Co. marriage records on hand, or would be willing to hop over to Chiles Street before the HHS Library closes for the holidays and check it out, I and quite a few other of James' descendants nationwide (oops, I forgot, there's also been a sizable tribe of them in Chile for 100 years or so) would be most grateful. Thanks much!! And Merry Christmas, Happy New Year!! Birchell Coslow Laramie WY (where it's going to be -15°F tonight!!)

    3. Nancy: Thank you for your response. I'll give you some of what I know/believe. My mother's maternal grandmother was Mary Frances YATES who married George M (or W or E) NEWMAN on March 4, 1862 and they had five children. She was born May 2, 1841 in Kentucky and is said to have died around 1800. His family was Catholic, hers Protestant. This is family tradition and as yet I have no "proof" of anything except my sister-in-law's notes from the 1880 census: Spencer County District #2 Mt.Eden. Census Volume 26, ED 17 or 171, sheet 10, line 13 'Father George E. Newman, mother Mary F. Newman 38 KY: children in household Mary E. Newman 17 KY, Jery(?) 14 KY, Hallie 12 KY, Lawrence 6 KY, Nora B. 3 KY (Their daughter Hallie grew up to marry William Bell Milton of Spencer County and subsequently lived in Anderson County before heading to California in mid-life -- Hallie was my grandmother) What I need is more about the Yates, especially any in Spencer and/or Anderson counties -- neighbors to Mercer and Washington counties. Can you tell me William's parents -- he's of the same generation as Mary Frances. Byron Marshall NF wrote: > > Which William Yates do you have in your line? 3. Hello, Birchell, You must be a descendant of the Coslow and Costello Dawson family of Anderson Co., KY!! Are you? There was a Cosetello Dawson that had a son, Richard Dawson, and he lived in at least Franklin Co. and Anderson Co. and he had a son, Costello, and Costello had a son he named Coslow, etc. And I believe they were also in Mercer Co., at times. So I concluded you had to be kin to them at least. I am a Dawson descendant of an Anderson Co. KY family. My GGgrandmother was Robina Dawson, and she married for sure in 1846 a Leonard Young who was 20 yrs. her senior. She was 29 when she married him and she already had at least a boy and a girl. The boy was my Ggrandfather, Thomas J. Dawson. Cannot find her married to a Dawson, or anyone else other than this Leonard Young. Would you know anything of this family? 3. Hello Friends, Cousins, Neighbors -- It really wasn't my intention to have the first post to the new Mercer County mail list be an announcement for a book (particularly one about a Sister County), but this particular book is truly a genealogical treasure for those with family tracks in Mercer County and Mercer's neighbors. It's hardbound, glossy, and gilded -- chock full of family data and old photos. It would be a perfect reference book except -- just like Jack Dalton Bailey's book about the Sallee family -- it doesn't mention ME!! One of my Sallee cousins in Jefferson County recently told me that he had driven down to the publisher in Paducah to buy a copy; mine was obtained for me a few years ago by a Harrodsburg cousin (Bea Roberts "Superstick" Norton) who glommed onto one of four copies still available at the time -- it reportedly was locked in a lawyer's office safe in Springfield. Mercer and Anderson are very closely connected, now and historically, so please feel free to post whatever you like for Mercer on the Anderson maillist. We'll do whatever we can to forward material that seems like it might pertain solely to Mercer, except of course for Mercer queries, obituaries, or text documents which should be posted directly to the appropriate Mercer boards (or sent to Pam Carey Durstock/Polly Menendez as appropriate).
