Hi All, I need some help~ A Genealogy researcher in Mexico, (not bilingual either), has emailed me a large file but I can't read it. Yes.....I took Spanish in college but, "so what"? That was 45 years ago and I haven't got a clue what I'm reading. Hmmmm.....? I'm about to wear out the, Google Language Tool that translates from one language to another but at this rate, it'll be another 45 yeas before I've translated this huge file! This brings me to my next situation which is..... When I tried to open another one of his files, it wouldn't open and I got a message saying, "WINDOWS CAN NOT OPEN THIS FILE" and I have no idea what to do in order to open the file. Using handy dandy Google translate tool again, I emailed the person in Mexico and told them about the problem. They emailed me back in Spanish and I translated it to English and this is what, "I think" he said for me to do. ------------------------------------------------------------------- (in Spanish)..... prima: tienes que tener en tu computadora de family search org. un programa que se llama paf.5 o ( personal ancestral file) nomber 4 o 5 y con ese debes poder leer lo que yo te envie al final. ---------------------------------------------------------- (which Google translated to English)..... Premium: you must have on your family computer search org. A program that is called paf.5 or (personal ancestral file) number 4 or 5 and with that you should be able to read what I send you in the end. ------------------------------------------------------------ Now I'm a pretty smart person all right but, I have no idea what I'm supposed to do? Does anyone out there understand any of this and can anyone out there PLEASE lend me a hand and tell me, educate me, and instruct me as to what I'm supposed to do in order to read this genealogical file? This file apparently goes all the way back to some of my earliest ancestors, (not from Kentucky - sorry), who migrated to the North American continent in the 1800's, and I would like to read the file! I just don't know how to get it to open. How do I always seem to get myself into these predicaments? >grin< Any helpers out there? Anyone a, Computer Whiz? Anyone out there really fluent in Spanish? With appreciation, Mimi Alexander wallyjakeandme@msn.com<mailto:wallyjakeandme@msn.com>
Mimi, I think you need a program to open this file. Google it to find where to get it. What Is Personal Ancestral File (PAF)? Ver 5 Personal Ancestral File, or PAF, is a WindowsR-based computer program you can use to record, organize, print, share, and submit genealogical information. It allows you to create a computerized family tree (known as a database or a family records data file) beginning with yourself and continuing with your parents, grandparents, and as many generations back as you are able to find.
