Found in a hidden corner of the Allen County Ky County Court Clerk's office were a series of Indenture of Apprenticeship for children between 1865-1911 Over two years ago I transcribed the documents that survived the October 1902 Fire, and through a series of computer crashes, moves, job changes, etc., thought the information lost. However, a copy was recently found in an old laptop I was in the process of disposing of. Surnames included: Alexander, Anderson, Brite, Brockett, Brown, Bruce, Bush, Carpenter, Cline, Dalton, Foster, Gatewood, Harris, Helson, Hinton, Howell, Jent, Kinchlow, Landers, Manion, Meador, Mithcell, Moore, Motley, Oaks, Ray, Richey, Rickman, Settle, Shelby, Smith, Tinsley, Tracy, Walker, Wilson, Witcher, Woodcock These 32 documents have been posted at _www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~kyallen/index.2.html_ (http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~kyallen/index.2.html) . What is especially interesting is that about half of Indentureships are post Civil War 1865-1869 providing birth dates and in some cases the names of other relatives of former slave children. The other half of the documents are white children primarily between 1890-1911. I have been unable to access the African American Research Special Project at KYGenWeb to offer these links, but am hoping via this message that the information will be received by the correct person. Hard copies of this document will be provided to the KY Library at WKU, the Allen County Historical Society, and the Allen County Court Clerk's office for ease of use if people visit these research centers and don't have internet access.
