Hi Martha, My ggGrandfather was John N. Carpenter, b abt 1830 in Jackson Co., TN. gggGrandfather Peterson Carpenter b abt. 1804 in Overton Co., TN; ggggGrandfather-Abner Carpenter b abt. 1781 in Amherst, VA. John N. married Louisa Bernetta Spivey in 1850 in Jackson, TN. In 1860 they are in Simpson Co., KY. John apparently died abt 1868 and Louisa remarried in August 1869 to a Mr. Walker. In 1880, Louisa's two youngest sons, John E. Carpenter and James R. Carpenter have been adopted by Eli D.Watkins (preacher) and his wife Elizabeth J. (who was Louisa's sister). They are living in Allen Co., district 1. I am trying to determine date of death of John N. and Louisa "Nettie". Cannot find John E. or James R after 1880 as well. Larry
Larry, I am being taken to lunch, but I'll check into this when I return! Do you know the origins of your Carpenters? I don't think they are my line, but that doesn't matter to me. Mine were originally Zimmermans, and Carpenter is a literal translation. They were in what is now Lincoln County, NC and came over in 1737 on the Pink Plaisance, landing in Philadelphia. They were only shortly in PA. They were originally Mennonites. They came with Peter Seitz/Sides, who married Barbara Carpenter, daughter of Christian "CZ"Carpenter and granddaughter of Hans Zimmerman, the latter two of Canton of Bern, Switzerland. There was a group who traveled together, but Peter was the leader. Kuykendalls were also married into this group. From Davidson County/Nashborough, they moved to Logan County, where they remained till 1799 and then went to Baton Rouge, LA. I don't remember when they went from TN to KY, but it was to join Ambrose Maulding to fight Native Americans. Martha Larry Ruff wrote: > Hi Martha, > My ggGrandfather was John N.
