I found a number of Stinsons in my records. They came in after my great-grand aunt, Nancy Leah Patterson married King Loving Finn and their granddaughter, Bertha Finn married Clarence Stinson. I can't find Clarence in the census records - I found Bertha in 1920 prior to her marriage about 1921. My records on these lines were probably what I got from Don Goad Ancientred@aol.com years ago. I don't know if he's still with us but I haven't been able to contact him in recent years. What is strange is that their son Charles Stinson took the surname Freeland - he was born Jan. 27, 1928, according to my records. I can't find him in KY birth records on on the 1930 census, either. Same goes for son Edward. I do have their sons Billie W. (Feb. 2, 1922 in Allen County) and Leslie P. (Sept. 27. 1924 in Simpson County) In addition to anyone researching Pattersons, especially the children of Neil William (often goes by William) Patterson, born May 24, 1824 in Smith County, Tenn. and his wives Mahulda Grenad/Grenade etc. and Mary Polly Austin, a warning - there is no continuity on whether the children were born in Smith County or in Simpson County, KY. It is totally baffling. I'm from Mahulda/Huldy's line through her daughter Mahulda/Huldy Patterson, wife of the very strange Atwood Willoughby. I believe Huldy Patterson was born on the day her mother died, therefore the youngest of that brood of six children. Her stepmother Mary Polly Austin raised her, and she was very close to her brother Levi Austin Patterson, who lived with her and her husband and family in Union County, KY - that's in the 1880 census. Huldy was born in 1853 and Neil William Patterson wasted to time marrying Mary Polly Austin - Can't find a trace of her afterward. I am updating my information on Tribal Pages and you may wish to consult that at http://marthahardcastl.tribalpages.com - It's just a small tweak - I hope to have the tweak done in a few hours. or email me at Mothra@woh.rr.com or call me at 937.836.1657. I have free calling, so if you don't, email me with your phone number and I'll call you back. I would appreciate any feedback on Tribal Pages. I use Ancestry.com etc. also, but I really like the format on Tribal Pages. I'm a freelance writer, mostly for the Dayton (Ohio) Daily News, and our area is heavily influenced and settled by people with Appalachian (mainly Kentucky) roots. Dayton is only 54 miles from Kentucky. In December, I wrote a story (it's on the website) about a local gangster - the most infamous in Dayton, who died on Thanksgiving Day, 2008. His name was Bill Stepp and he was a descendant of both the Hatfield and McCoy tribes, not to mention the fifth great-grandson of Jane Jefferson, sister of President Thomas, not to mention among others including early Jamestown settlers and even several Mayflower passengers. For a shady character, Bill Stepp has some of the bluest and oldest blood around, and I suspect his early Virginia lines might tie into some of our south central Kentucky families. I also think my story about him is a good read, if I do say so myself. There's also an explanation of the term "Briar," which is common vernacular around here for Kentuckians/Appalachians and their next-of-kin. It's a sort of an "N" word in some ways, but I think there should be pride associated with the term instead. I'm proud to be a Briar. http://stepp2008.tribalpages.com For the story, scroll down to the bottom and click on "Infamous Bill Stepp dies at 73" Martha
Martha, I went to the Carpenter DNA site and it looks like my Carpenters are in group 6 the Virginia/Ohio Carpenters. Thomas, b England came to VA in 1760. So, no I don't think I am related to the Zimmerman Carpenters. -- Larry Ruff
Larry, I am being taken to lunch, but I'll check into this when I return! Do you know the origins of your Carpenters? I don't think they are my line, but that doesn't matter to me. Mine were originally Zimmermans, and Carpenter is a literal translation. They were in what is now Lincoln County, NC and came over in 1737 on the Pink Plaisance, landing in Philadelphia. They were only shortly in PA. They were originally Mennonites. They came with Peter Seitz/Sides, who married Barbara Carpenter, daughter of Christian "CZ"Carpenter and granddaughter of Hans Zimmerman, the latter two of Canton of Bern, Switzerland. There was a group who traveled together, but Peter was the leader. Kuykendalls were also married into this group. From Davidson County/Nashborough, they moved to Logan County, where they remained till 1799 and then went to Baton Rouge, LA. I don't remember when they went from TN to KY, but it was to join Ambrose Maulding to fight Native Americans. Martha Larry Ruff wrote: > Hi Martha, > My ggGrandfather was John N. Some email list?subbers complain their email boxes get cluttered with too many messages.? At the risk of offending some on this list, my response is "That is what the delete key is for".? I delete tons of emails on a daily basis if they don't pertain to me, but sometimes the subject just might be the answer to one of my questions. I do not mind any emails that come through this list if the family names are part of Allen County and/or it's parent counties of Warren, Barren, and breakoff county of Simpson.? And frankly, I prefer?messages to be posted to the email list so the information can be archived for future reference.? Unlike most email lists such as SOKY, anyone interested in Allen Co can go to the Rootsweb.com website, look for the County email list and search?postings for the past 10 years.? There just might be a posting that?was archived?before someone subbed to the list, or a new family name one has just linked to, that might be valuable information. Many times a tidbit of information posted will lead someone to? discover the crack in their brick wall and/or connect to a "cousin" they didn't know existed.? I am not territorial about information nor am I an advocate for postings only by particular people.? I am about sharing, and that is what this email list and any other email list was intended to be, although some lists have changed in their mission over the years.? In all the years of managing this list, I've only had one complaint about postings.?There are over 125 people subbed to this list and it surprises me how few postings occur. And to be blunt, if you don't want to receive emails, then you can unsub from this list by sending an email to kyallen-request@rootsweb.com with the subject heading "unsubscribe".? I want people on this list who are willing to share and correspond with others, and if that is not what you are looking for, then this may not be the list you want to belong to. All I ask is: 1) if the subject of the email content changes from the original message (i.e. Grinstead Cemetery to Hardcastle family), then change the subject heading in the email so those who aren't interested can delete the message prior to opening it if the message does not pertain to their family search.? It is misleading for someone to think a message concerns a Cemetery and instead it's about a particular family and vice versa. 2) the messages pretain to genealogical and/or family research?topics. If you find a website that is helpful, share it.? If you have a research hint, post it.? If you are able to break down a brick wall, share it.? There is nothing more joyful that finding that elusive answer after years of hunting. The only two Stinson's that I have knowledge of is My great grandmother Nancy Margaret Stinson born may 12, 1844 in TN died Sept 1, 1921 buried in Oak Forest No 2 cemetery in Allen Co Ky. The other one is her father Wesley Stinson and he was born about 1808 in Ky according to my info. That is all the info I have. If you have something to add that would be great.
