James was engaged in a "mercantile business at Marion, KY" unti 1847, when he went to Nashville, TN. James married 1st) Mary Jane Epley of Logan Co. KY (children Marshall M., Ella Virginia, Robert Stevens) and 2nd) Sallie Nutt. I ran across his bio in a book while looking for something else and noticed he was born in Adair Co.
