You might start there to look for your slave holder named Gray. Also, last night while looking at some copies of records I have for my own research, I came across this: "Drakeford Gray, 5/15/1780, 461 acres page A54". This is Jefferson Land Entries from a book called Fincastle & Kentucky County VA.-KY Records and History Vol 1, by Cook Publications of Evansville, IN. If you have a good genealogy library nearby you might find this. Anyway, this means that Gray purchased a large amount of land so he likely had slaves. So you might check him out in census records. By the way, Kentucky originally was one big county belonging to Virginia.

In the early censuses--1800 through 1840--the question was asked, how many slaves. If you look at those and find a Gray with some slaves listed, then you'll have your person. But I looked on my road atlas and couldn't find a town with the name Elton in KY, so it must be one of those small towns that died out. Or, if you belong to AAA you could get a map of KY which might show more than my atlas does. If I can be of any more help, email me.
