ALBERT SCHILLING, one of the best known business men in Richmond, took his life last tuesday morning. The news of the man"s rash act startled the people, as it was not known that there could be any reason for SCHILLING ending his life. He had always seemed healthy, properous and happy. SCHILLING went home on the morning of the suicide, after midnight, laid his money and keys on the table in the family room, disrobed, and without revealing his intention to his wife, took from the mantle a two-ounce bottle of carbolic acid. Going to the kitchen, he poured an ounce and a half of the poisen into a tin cup and swallowed the deadly draught. Without saying a word to Mrs. SCHILLING , he returned to his room and lay down for the night. A few minutes later his wife heard SCHLLING groaning in agony, and becoming frightened over his terrible sufferings and her inability to get an answer to her questions, she summoned the family physician. But before the doctor arrived, SCHILLING died in the most horrible manner, the paroxysms racking his body and his face being contorted in a dreadful way in death. His friends have been unable to conjecture why the properous confectioner should have committed suicide, but it is advanced by some that he had become worked over the loss of the FRANK FEHR beer agency, which he had for some months held, but recently lost, and had brooded over the magnified misfortune till he was driven to the desparate deed he committed. The dead man had been conducting a grocery and confectionary and had a satisfactory business. he came here from Cincinnati about ten years ago and was generally respected by all who knew him. He was a brother-in-law of Policeman EVERETT BERRY, of this place, and was a member of one of the county's wealthiest and most esteemed famalies. He held a $2,000 life insurance policy in the A.O.U.W. was twenty-eight years of age, and leaves a wife and two children. The funeral occurred from the residence last wednesday. Mr. SCHILLING was well known by a number of Adair county people.

Frankfort led off with five killed and mortally wounded in two terrific street battles, one of which was a continuation of the other. Monday night, the Republicans and single -standard Democrats discovered that the silver Democrats were hiring negroes to remain away from the polls on Tuesday. by sending them to a bull-pen near town. The Republicans and single-standard Democrats there upon sent out a force of armed men to stop the work. This party led by FRANK EGBERT, a desperado and a bad man generally. In the edge of town, they met two wagons which were returning from conveying a lot of negroes to the bull-pen. The two wagons were driving rapidly when a man armed with a winchester rifle, ordered them to halt. As both wagons moved on, they were fired into by the party led by EGBERT, HOWARD GORE was killed outright, driver JOHN SMITH was shot in both legs, one of which has since been amputated. He will die. CHARLES GRAHAM, colored, the other driver, was shot in the right lung. Warrants were sworn out for EGBERT and those supposed to have been with him, and about 4 in the afternoon, Deputy Sheriff DEAKINS and six other deputies met EGBERT and his cousin , WALTER GOINS, on Main Street. When DEAKINS informed EGBERT that he had a warrant for him, he was answered by a shot in the abdomen, but returned the fire before he fell. EGBERT fell dead, GOINS was shot in the foot and leg, and was taken to jail. DEAKINS lived four hours. At Crooked Creek, Rockcastle county, CHESLY PAYNE, JOHN LAWRENCE,and HENRY LONFIELD were killed while resisting a Sheriff"s posse. In Lexington, ROBERT DUGAN was shot four times by WM . McNAMARA. In Paducah , JESSE PATTON and K BEAGLES fought and both died. In Junction City, J.C. WRIGHT and JASE BLACKERTY shot each other to death. In Sulphur Springs, Ohio County LEWIS FRANKLIN was killed by FRANK SMITH. In Jamestown, Russell County, MERRILL TARTER cut WILLIAM REDMON"S throat killing him instantly. In WhiteLick, Garrard County, THOS. GREENUP shot and mortally wounded THOMAS ROYSTON. In Louisville , three men were killed. --Glasgow Times
Joe Wright & Jase Blackerty Shoot Out, Adair County, 1897 http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/ifetch2?/u1/data/ky+index+14143990+F Transcribed by: Laura Wright - [email protected] Date: 14 Feb 2000 Taken from The Adair County News of November 10, 1897 Columbia , Ky Typed as published, & submitted By Laura Frost Wright TERRIBLE TRAGEDY JOE WRIGHT and JASE BLACKERTY shoot one another to death at Junction City(Ky) We take from the Danville Advocate the following account of a terrible tragedy that occurred at Junction City on Tuesday the 2nd inst. One of the parties who was slain, Mr. WRIGHT was well-Known to a number of our citizens, having frequently visited Columbia while, ELD. W. K. AZBILL was president of C.C. COLLege. He was an uncle of Miss MABLE WRIGHT, who was a student of that institution: JOE WRIGHT and JASE BLACKERTY had a desperate street fight at Junction City yesterday, in which both men were killed. WRIGHT lived one minute after being shot, and BLACKERTY survived three minutes. It was a most extraordinary encounter, BLACKERTY displaying great nerve during the duel. The killing was the result of old trouble between the men. BLACKERTY, when drinking was very dangerous and frequently became disorderly. He had terrorized Junction City a number of times. Several years ago FRANK ELLIS, then town marshal, went to arrest BLACKERTY and deputized WRIGHT to assist him. BLACKERTY resisted and ELLIS and WRIGHT opened fire on him. BLACKERTY fell and the two men went up and fired several shots into his body.BLACKERTY miraculously escaped death and lived to prosecute WRIGHT and ELLIS for shooting him. The case in court did not terminate satisfactory and he never ceased to harass WRIGHT. Time and again was an encounter narrowly averted, and the death of one or both of them was expected at most any time. Tuesday BLACKERTY was drinking. Some persons allege that WRIGHT was also slightly under the influence of liquor. About half past one O"Clock WRIGHT was talking to a crowd of men between TUTTLE"S place of business and Dunn & Surber"s store. During the conversation, WRIGHT, it is alleged, made a remark about BLACKERTY which BLACKERTY, then passing by, overheard. BLACKERTY stopped and said: "What"s that you said about me?' There are conflicting stories regarding what immediately followed. Probaly the most authentic is, that WRIGHT and BLACKERTY drew their weapons about the same time and BLACKERTY fired first missing WRIGHT. WRIGHT"S first and only shot struck BLACKERTY in the lungs and felled him to the ground with a death wound. WRIGHT might still have lived had he not, like many another man, wanted to bend over the form of his victim. BLACKERTY was upon the ground, almost motionless, with his pistol in his hand. WRIGHT walked up to him and as he approached, BLACKERTY, with wonderful vitality, raised up and fired. WRIGHT received the ball in the lower part of his abdomen and fell backward. Several friends caught him and started toward the hotel with him. After they had gone a few yards, some one remarked to him: "JASE is dead." "Yes." feebly answered WRIGHT, " and he has killed me. With this he sank to the ground and expired. The killing naturally created a great deal of excitment at Junction City. It was the only occurence which distrubed election day there. WRIGHT leaves a widow and one child. He married the widow SHERRITT. BLACKERTY was unmarried. Both men were well known. WRIGHT conducted the Junction City marble works. WRIGHT"S funeral was held last Wednesday at the Christian Church in Junction City, Ky.

Do you have more information about Anna Francis Retherford? I believe she may match one of the siblings in my Retherford line from Adair county.
My ggg gfather, Matthew Busby, married 2nd wife Sally Drake Winfrey in 1821 Adair Co., KY. Sally was the widow of Elisha T. Winfrey and they had at least 2 daughters, Caroline and NancyWinfrey. Caroline and Nancy married Jones brothers, Philip and Green Jones. In trying to identify the 3rd and last wife of Matthew, Mary Polly Busby, I've been looking at the Fair family from Lincoln Co, KY. I think I have enough evidence to conclude that Mary Polly Busby was Mary Polly Fair, d/o James and Mary Elizabeth May Fair. James and Mary Elizabeth also had a son, William M. Fair who married a Naomi Jones in May of 1835 in Lincoln Co, KY. Am curious to see if I can in some way connect the Jones brothers to Naomi Jones. I'm also in real need of death date (or divorce date?) of 2nd wife, Sally Drake Winfrey. This will help me in trying to find the marriage record for 3rd marriage to Mary Polly. I was sure they married in Adair Co but I can find no record of this in the marriage records. I looked at Lincoln Co, KY marriage records and found a Matthew Busby who married a Margaret (Mary?) Bingaman/Bingham in 1841 but I don't know if this could be Mary Polly Fair. It could be possible if she had been married before her marriage to Matthew. Would like suggestions of where to look for this marriage record other than the Adair Co marriage records. Did Adair Co keep marriage in other places? If anyone has ANY information on any of the above, please contact me. Paula

Caldwell (1798 - 1860s) who married Lucy Hamilton (1806-1860s) the daughter of Thomas Hamilton (1760s - 1850). The Henry Caldwell who married Lucy's sister Nancy Hamilton was John P. Caldwell's brother. John P. Caldwell moved to Obion County, TN, between 1835 and 1840. Three of his brothers also moved there. An 1851 family Bible of their brother James Caldwell (1803 - 1873) lists the marriages of John and Henry with Lucy and Nancy Hamilton. They were all the sons of Robert Caldwell (born 1762, in Lunenburg (now Charlotte) County, VA, - 1840s in Adair County, KY) and Hannah Willis (1767 - 1850s in Adair County, KY). I have the Caldwell line back to the early 1600s in northern Ireland. They were cousins of the 1825 to 1832 US Vice President John Caldwell Calhoun (1782 - 1850). I would like to contact Debbie Hamilton who has an excellent Thomas Hamilton web site. But my e-mails are not getting through. Anybody interested in the Caldwells of Adair! County, KY?

Everyone, I just wanted to let you all know about a book fair being held in Glasgow, KY, for genealogists. Anyone close enough to come would enjoy it, I think. Here are the details... It will be held on October 27 @ 10-4 at the Cultural Center in Glasgow, KY. There will be "vendors" there from most/all of the South Central KY counties--Barren, Warren, Green, Adair [I will be there will all of the books we have for sale], Cumberland, Metcalfe, Russell (?), etc.--selling genealogy- and history-related books. Some are Gen. Societies, some are private publishers, but all are worth browsing and you will likely find something to buy! There will also be some displayers this year - a fellow with a fabulous Indian relic collection; one with a Civil War guerilla display (swords, photos, pistols); a wonderful potter, live folk song and bluegrass music.... Last year was great and they didn't have near the events planned. Anyone researching in this area who is close enough to come will benefit. I met several people last year whom I have been assisting on the internet. They had driven in from surrounding states... Sandi Gorin is the contact person for further details and directions, so here is her information (her email sig!): Col. No.
Are these families the same except with different spellings passed on over the years? I found an Atkisson in Amherst Co, VA 1810 census. My Banks and Busby line married into the Atkinson family. Just wondering if the VA Atkisson and the Adair Atkinson families were connected. Thanks for any help, Paula
