I have a Christian Co bk ( small) & I looked up your Hicks NO LUCK but there is a story abt the town of Crofton: The most considerable & important town in the 3 pricincts is Crofton, in Scates' Mills, on the Louisville & Nanshville Railroad. It is of modern date, having been founded in 1871 by Mr. J.E. Croft, but already numbers some 300 or 350 inhabitants. As a business & educational point it is of much importance to that part of the county. It has 12 stores, comprising dry goods, grocery, & drug stores, 1 lg flouringmill, the Crofton Merchant & Custom Mill, & 2 or more blacksmiths shops. Its educationa institutions are said to be excellent of their king, & are 3 in number. The Male & Female Academy, taught by Pro. Ingraham & Mrs. Kate Yeargin, is the principal of these & numbers an average attendance of some 30 or 40 pupils. The building is a large, two story frame, 30x60 ft, & is furnished throughout with patent folding desks. Miss Leah Boxleys private school has an average attendance of between 20 & 25 pupils. The public school taught by Mrs. Hancock has some 18 or 20 pupils. Besides some 50 residences there is 1 church, Methodist Episcopal Church South, 3 tobocca warehouses, handling something near 1 million pounds per yr, 1 pork-packing establishment, a postoffice, express office & a telegraph office. The town is well supplied with physicians, there being 4 to look after the health of the community. Ther are a few other unimportant villages, cross-road stores, etc. scattered throughout this portion of the county, but they are not deemed of sufficient importance to require extended mention. This bk was wrote in abt 1884 that is why it sounds like all of this just happened- hope you enjoy this Maggie Lake Realty ----- Original Message ----- From: <EEHIX@aol.com> To: <KY-ROLLCALL-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, June 07, 2001 12:14 PM Subject: [KY-ROLLCALL] Thomas N.
