Owner Denis Habit was Responsible for Demise. Article Text: Louisville, Ky., Sept. 10.--"Checkers," an 8-year-old English prize bulldog owned by Sam F. FISHER, of this city, will not greet his old friends at th Kentucky State Fair this year. "Checkers" died to-night. The dog has been exhibited at county fairs throughout Kentucky and had taken many ribbons, but had never captured a "blue" at the State Fair, although the FISHER entry caused the judges to scratch their heads on more than one occasion. "Checkers" had only one vice, according to FISHER. He chewed tobacco, but "only in a mild form," FISHER asserts, however, that tobacco chewing had nothing to do with the dog's death. "He was just worn out from travelling," FISHER said, adding: "He's been across the country dozens of times with me, and a more enthusiastic motorist never lived." ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ KY-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news!
