Newspaper Abstracts Update Finding Our Ancestors In The News! As we ring in the new year and look forward to finding those elusive ancestors, I would like to take a moment to look back on the past year and the happenings at NewspaperAbstracts.com. 2004 brought much needed improvements to the site and the way that news items are contributed, making it possible for news items to be online within minutes instead of weeks or months. No longer was it necessary for county and state coordinators to painstakingly hand-code and upload web pages, now it is being done by the simple use of an online form that allows coordinators to immediately post the news item to the site. We also welcomed dozens of new contributors and coordinators to our Newspaper Abstracts family and with their help grew by nearly 3,900 news items in a single year! There are now over 14,765 news items from all over the United States, Canada and Ireland, available free of charge on the http://www.NewspaperAbstracts.com website. I would like to take this time to publicly thank all of the county and state coordinators, along with the site contributors, for their dedication in consistently submitting news items to allow this site continue to grow and provide the visitors with such a wonderful resource. Happy searching, Karen BALLARD, JAMES (MRS) LEBANON WEEKLY STANDARD - 8/6/1879 ARTICLE DEPLORABLE ACCIDENT A private dispatch received here last night brought the painful intelligence that the wife of James M. Ballard, Esq., Sheriff of this county, was dreadfully burned yesterday afternoon. Mr. Ballard's house near Loretto took fire, but the fire was quickly extinguished. While Mrs. Ballard was engaged in removing some articles from a press , a powder horn exploded and set fire to her clothing. Her injuries were of such a character that they were expected to prove fatal. Mr. Ballard was in Lebanon yesterday and had started home about a quarter of an hour before the telegram arrived. Im new and dont know the rules for this list but if we can ask I have a favor: on a web site for ky, cant remember which site but i found a William Gabbard who murdered Amanda Vires, when I started my geneology my granny told me her father killed her mother or something and I have yet to find anything on it but then I found this and no further info qith it, I would love the story or an obit for Amanda this happened in 1920s prolly 1924/25 as granny was born in 1924, her and her brother and sister was sent to an orphanage after this, he went on to marry? but i applogize if we arent aloud to do this. Have you tried searching around Glasgow, KY? Mitchells and Bakers are plentiful there, Bakers have been mainstay families around Columbia, Adair County, since it was formed. Garrard County was not too far away for families to wander in the early days. The Baker I am searching for is Mary Baker married to John H. Baker of Brandy Springs, Garrard County. In the 1930 census, John H. is listed a being 36 and wife Mary as 31. As I understand it, Mary was one of maybe five children of George W. Mitchell and unknown Mary's mother. It is my belief that Mary's mother lived nearby the home of John Mitchell in Brandy Springs. The Mitchell men didn't like to wander far from home to find their women. I also believe that George never married Mary's mother. And the poor thing probably died in childbirth like all the other women the Mitchell men were drawn to. Just thought there might be some information about who Mary's mother and sibliings were.
