The Way Political and Family Rows End in Kentucky. Article Text: Bowling Green, Ky., Nov. 6.--Magistrate Elijah UPTON today shot and killed Tom STEWART, a well to do farmer, at Richardsville, in this county. The shooting was the result of the issuing of a warrant by Squire UPTON for STEWART's arrest upon the application of the latter's son, following a quarrel over politics. STEWART had been voting the Republican ticket, but last Tuesday announced his intention of voting for the Democratic nominee. His father entered a decided protest, which angered the young man, and father and son came to blows. STEWART declared he would have his father arrested, and swore out a warrant before Magistrate UPTON. The boy's father heard of the son's intention and sent word to the magistrate that if he issued a warrant he would kill him on sight. STEWART and Squire UPTON met on the street to-day and after some words the latter shot and killed STEWART. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ KY-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news! Prominent Citizens Engage in a Disastrous Shooting Affray Article Text: Louisville, Ky., Jan. 3.--The bloodiest fight in Magoffin county's history took place today about a mile from Alyersville. There were eight or ten of the county's best known citizens engaged on each side armed with repeating rifles and navy pistols, and the trouble, which had its inception in a trivial matter the day before, culminated in a pitched battle. John Davis was killed by a pistol shot, said to have been fired after he was disabled and disarmed. W. E. DESKINS, constable, was fatally wounded by a shot in the right hip. Monteville DESKINS, justice of the peace, has not been found since the fight, and it is supposed he was fatally wounded. Shepherd COLE, coroner of the county, received some fearful blows with a clubbed gun and may die. Bruce PATRICK was shot through the bowels and is reported to be dying. W. T. PATRICK received a rifle ball alongside the head and was at first supposed to be dead, but he rallied and physicians say he will live if there is no concussion of the brain. Reports as to who were immediately responsible for the terrible affair are conflicting and it is not even known who fired the fatal shots. Dug RISNER and Samuel RISNER were brought here this morning by Coroner COLE and a strong guard charged under a warrant issued by Monteville DESKINS with assault on W. T. DESKINS. The coroner committed a dangerous impropriety in making a guard of persons who are identified with the prosecution and for whose protection the warrant was issued. This was resented by friends of the prisoners and both sides came to town heavily armed. The prisoners appeared before Police Justice George H. GARDNER, and the commonwealth not being ready for trial, they were released under bonds. Some loud talking on the part of one of the prisoners very nearly precipitated a fight in town but prompt interference of the authorities prevented it. A fight took place an hour later. No arrests were made and it is feared another fight is imminent. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ KY-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news!
