Article Text: Mayfield, Ky., Dec. 24.--Two men dead and another wounded is the result of a tragedy that occurred in the southwest section of the city at a late hour last night. Deputy Sheriff John USHER and Charles BOWLINE, a saloon keeper were killed and Birch HILLER, an associate of the latter, received a bullet in the head. USHER and Sheriff Sam DOUTHITT went to BOWLINE's house to arrest HILLER and he resisting, USHER procured a revolver and fired at him. BOWLINE ran into the room and fired a bullet through USHER's heart and was in the act of shooting Sheriff DOUTHITT when the latter shot him dead. Fifteen shots were fired. Article Text: Two weeks ago last Sunday the seventeen-year-old son of Lark NELSON, near Carter City, loaded a little shot gun too heavy and when the gun was discharged the breech-pin flew out and imbedded itself entirely in his forehead. He lived until the following Saturday when he died. Article Text: A special despatch to the Courier Journal from Danville says: "Walter SANDERS, late Sheriff of Lincoln County, and his brother in law, Jack BALLARD, were killed Tuesday evening at Richmond, Madison county, by Gus EDWARDS, Town Marshal, and a party of his friends. A younger brother of SANDERS was at Richmond fair about a week ago and during that time was badly beaten over the head by EDWARDS, SANDERS and his friends say inexcusably. EDWARDS says that he interfered while he was in the discharge of his duty as an officer. Yesterday Walter SANDERS and his friends went to Richmond to attend the trial of young SANDERS for his alleged offence. After the trial a conversation occurred between EDWARDS and Walter SANDERS at the Garnet House, during which SANDERS denounced EDWARD's conduct as brutal and upwardly, at the same time drawing a pistol. About this time SANDERS was shot by some other person,but leveling his pistol he made things lively while his strength lasted. When the! firing ceased SANDERS and his brother in law, BALLARD, were dead, Marshal EDWARDS slightly and his brother dangerously wounded. This venerable lady though almost an octogenarian, was visiting relatives here late last summer, and apparently in as good health and sprightly as a lady of fifty years. She was the mother of twenty children, nineteen of whom she lived to see grow up and married, and sixteen survive her.
