    1. ([KY-KNOTT-COUNTY])Memorial Day
    2. Richard Berkheiser
    3. Hi everyone! Sorry to start another thread of messages so close to a Surname Shout Out but with the lists being down the first part of the year it threw my scheduling off. Hope you don't mind... With this being the Memorial Day Weekend, I thought it would it be interesting to post one ancestor we have in our family trees who served in one of the many wars and battles we fought in US History. Obviously it has to be an ancestor from this county. :) Give a brief biography of that person including the unit and war he or she was in, a POW, injuries, plus the usual genealogical stuff. Thanks in advance and have a safe weekend! Rick B Admin

    3. Hi everyone! Just letting you know that the lists are back up and running again so to "celebrate" our return I'm initiating a first ever Surname Shout Out. A Surname Shout Out works like a Roll Call where we all post an ancestor we're totally stumped on. Happy Hunting! Rick B Admin

    3. Welcome Donald, Hadn't heard from you in sometime. But was thinking about you recently when we uploaded our Old Regular and Primitive Baptist Church Obits Index. Saw some of your family included in it. Go to - www.rootsweb.com/~kyknott - what was the our old GenWeb page. We're related on the Amburgey, Smith, Combs, Mullins, and Everidge lines - to mention a few. Also of interest to you may be the cemeteries pages (over 550 pages of graves) - this is not the complete index to our cemetery readings, but it'll hold a place until we can upload the rest. Dorothy Griffith recently updated and re-formatted the Amburgey Association scrapbooks and recently mailed them back to the Society. We'll be scanning those for internet access - which I'm sure you'll get some enjoyment from. Respectfully yours, David R. Smith, Pres. Knott Historical Society, Inc. Obituary provided courtesy of Hindman Funeral Services, Hindman, Kentucky. Posted in the Troublesome Creek Times, Wednesday, July 27, 2005 ------------------------------------------ RE: Homer Hall Obit Here are some records which pertain to the families of HOMER HALL, who is mentioned in the above obituary which was posted on the Knott mailing list. I am listing some basic and general information from my files in an effort to help in the ancestry of Homer Hall. Corrections and or additions accepted and appreciated. There may be mistakes, but I have tried to document as needed. From the personal files of Ona Hall-Scalf onascalf@bellsouth.net and luvsgenealogy@yahoo.com Homer's ancestors are Anthony Hall and Rutha Butler who married on 23 Dec 1794 in Caswell Co. NC. Anthony was a veteran of the Revolutionary War, and died on 14 Dec 1846 in Letcher Co. Ky. [photo of Anthony's tombstone on file; copy of his marriage record and military papers also on file] Anthony and Ruth's son William aka "Gunsmith Billy" Hall married Margaret Johnson on 11 July 1816 in Floyd Co. KY {consent date of 24 June 1816} Source: Annals of Floyd County "1800-1826" by Charles C. Wells. It is told that he obtained the nickname of Gunsmith Billy Hall due to his occupation, which was being a blacksmith. William "Gunsmith Billy" Hall and Margaret's son James H. Hall was married twice. His first marriage was in 1838 to Emma Vance. Emma died on 08 Oct 1853, and James married 2nd time to Nancy Davis ca 1854. According to my files and records, Homer was a descendent of both of James "Stiff Jim" Hall's wives. (born 1752). There is a birth recorded in Kirkhill, Scotland for Anthony Hall, s/o Anthony and Mary Hall on 11 March 1752. It is believed that this is the same Anthony Hall. In 1810 Knox Co Ky Census, this Anthony is listed over 45 years old. On 15 May 1820, Anthony Hall was appointed as surveyor of the road from Rockhouse [which is now Letcher Co. Ky] into the road above Patrick Johnson's place. [Source: Annals of Floyd County "1800-1826" by Charles C. He mentions three of his sons in this record: Alexander age 17, John age 15, and Samuel age 13. His pension papers show that he was a private, and that he fought in the Virginia Line of the Continental Army in North Carolina and Virginia. Anthony's wife Ruth states in her pension ! application in 1850 that she was a widow, and mentions 3 of her sons in this one: William, James and David. Anthony Hall died on 14 Dec 1846 in Letcher Co. Ky., and was buried on his property, which is currently located next to to the Riley Bentley Cemetery, on Kentucky Route 7, about 02 miles south of the Deane Kentucky post office [in Letcher Co. He was born in Letcher County Ky., on the Kentucky River on 28 Mar 1821 and died on 04 October 1898. He was married to EMMA VANCE in 1838. To them were born 03 sons and 04 daughters. EMMA died on 08 Oct 1852 and he was married to NANCY DAVIS in 1853, and to them were born five boys and four girls. He professed a hope in Christ and was baptized in the fellowship of Rebecca Church in 1894. From the time of his conversion, he lived a pious life and was loved by all who knew him. He was a faithful Christian until his death. Whilst the church is mourning his loss he is rejoicing around the throne of God, for we are sure that when death seized upon him, he met the storm with calmness, and bore his sufferings with patience. HALL, a prominent man of that county. Reliable news reached here THURSDAY morning to the effect that officers have the murderer, DOLPH DRAUGHON, located in an old farmhouse a few miles from HINDMAN, the county seat, and have demanded his surrender. The house is entirely surrounded, and every avenue of escape is cut off. DRAUGHON has declared that he will die before he surrenders. As a last resort dynamite has been ordered to the place of retreat, and in case he fails to give himself up the house will be blown to pieces. This was the sixth murder committed by DRAUGHON, and if he is captured the citizens will surely lynch him, unless he is secretly sent out of the county. 1. Joseph Hall (s/o Ezekiel Hall and Chloe Branson)
    2. Hi All, I'm new to the groups, so please bear with me if I make mistakes. First of all, I descend from several lines of the Hall families from Eastern Ky; including Anthony Hall and Ruth Butler, and Reuben Hall and Nancy B. Smith families; I also descend from William C. Hall and Mary Polly Johnson Family of Knott Co. Ky. Another ancestor of mine is "Bad Lewis" Hall from Pike Co. KY who married Rhoda Bentley on 03 Dec 1853 in Perry Co. Ky. Since I descend from so many branches of the Hall family, I collect and copy all of the records for the Hall families that I can possibly find, and among my collection of "Hall" death certificates, was this DC for Joseph Hall, s/o Ezekiel Hall and Chloe Branson. I saw a few messages pertaining to the family of Ezekiel Hall and Chloe Branson, and thought I'd post the info from the DC to all of you. This is NOT my line of Hall relatives, however. 1. [Ky-Knott-Co] 1930 Knott County Census Transcription Project
    2. Knott Historical Society
    3. Dear Knott Countians, We would like to express our appreciation for those of you who've volunteered to assist the Knott County Historical Society in transcribing the 1930 Knott County, Kentucky, Federal Census. Volunteers can express which precincts in which they wish to transcribe, especially, those wherein your ancestors lie. Check the 1920 Knott County Federal Census Index we recently uploaded to check which precincts you would be interested in transcribing. We appreciate each and every one of you for volunteering to help with this worthwhile project. (Our volunteers are throughout the U.S.A.) This 1930 census has been a priority project for our Society, especially, since there has never been any hardcopy publications of the census available, as has the 1900, 1910, and 1920 Knott censuses. So, we will not be affecting the sales of previously published, competently transcribed censuses done either by individuals or historical societies. We think this to be courteous and honorable, as there is a plethora of public domain information which has never been re-published and should be uploaded to the internet for free use. Sincerely yours, David R. Smith, Pres. Knott County Historical Society, Inc.

    1. [Ky-Knott-Co] 1930 Letcher County Census Available in Two Volumes
    2. Knott Historical Society
    3. The following was recently posted to the Letcher County Mailing list by Lorene Profitt. We are excited about this new publication and these people need to be commended on their tireless efforts in transcribing this census. Purchasing these censuses also helps to support your local historical societies. Both these prices are very reasonable for a two volume set. A transcription of the 1930 Letcher County Census is available through Letcher County Genealogical and Historical Society. It is a two-volume set, 852 pages, including an every-name index. That is every person in every household, not just head of house. It is my understanding the pre-publish price will be $55 plus $10 postage until May 1st, then the price will go up to $65 plus postage. You may order from Letcher County Historical Society, P. O. Box 312, Whitesburg, KY 41858. Lorene Profitt Let them know you were referred by the Knott County Historical Society. David R. Smith.
