This is just to let you know the RootsWeb mailing lists are functioning again. You may now post any questions you may have been sitting on while they were not. The Archives are being re-populated, but due to their size, it is going to take some time to complete. This post should initiate that process. TRUE STORY This happened in Cumberland, Ky. Harlan Co.. off of Cloverlick rd. in Pounding Mill Branch.. In 1945 my parents broke up. My sister and I had to go live with our grandparents Melvin and Lovey Barker.. I was four years old and no one had ever scared me of any thing.. My Aunt and I was sleeping at the foot of the bed near a window since it was a full moon we could see every thing out side.. We had no electricty and enjoyed the extra light in the room.. My Aunt was one year older than me.. In the middle of the night I woke up and saw a strange thing looking me right in the eyes.. Thinking I had had a dream I closed my eyes and opened them again.. It was still looking at me ... It was black and had human eyes.. they had expression in them.. It did`nt look like a bear or dog or any thing I had seen before.. It looked like it was nelt beside of my bed with its paws on my bed.. As I was watching it I saw another thing come up behind this one.. It was tall and looked to be white.. I know now it looked like a kangaroo.. At that time I had never seen a picture of a kangaroo.. It jumped on the bed.. I woke my Aunt up. At this time it began to pull the covers off of us.. We began to scream and kick it, it was solid.. My grandpa herd us screaming and lit the lamp.. The very minute the the lite was lit they disappeared.. Grandpa came into the room and looked every where-nothing!! Scolding us for wakeing him up, He went back to bed.. The next moring my Aunt denied seeing any thing in fear of getting a whipping.. After that night only the white one came back and would pull the covers off of us.. Every night it was me this thing wanted.. I would scream , fight and kick it.. One night I thought I would sleep in the middle between my sister and aunt.. I woke up the next moring so happy I had had a good night sleep and nothing trying to get me~UNTILL ~I looked at my sister, there was purple paw prints all over her clothes.. As if to say I took a look at you Carol and I was here and you can`t hide from me.. We got out of bed and on the wooden floors was what looked like purple mud.. It looked like when a dog gets mud on it feet and is running and slides... Now I had proof that something was here !! I got my grandma and showed her the floor and Wanda`s clothes.. She said we put mud on the floor..and was scolding us.. My Aunt jumped in and said where could we get purple mud ?? Grandma began to tell us of thing she had herd in the house.. She said she herd doors slamming and dishes crashing to the floor BUT when she would go look,, there was no broken dishes... I got to the point I would put a large meat knife under my pillow.. I would sleep with the covers over my head and push then up under my feet and on my side.. One night I felt this thing jump on my bed and began to pull at my covers.. I told it I had a knife.. It jumped off the bed.. I knew by that it understood what I said.. I woke up one night and it was under the covers with me, I could feel the hair on it,, I jumped out of bed and ran into my grandmas room.. the fire was still glowing in the fire place.. I tried to wake her up but could`nt.. She had a flash light beside of her bed.. I got it and shined it into my room.. There it was under the covers.. The hump in my bed was as large as a small cow... I tried to get my grandma to wake up.. I sat beside of her bed till I herd the most curdleing scream.. I shined the flash kight back in the room and it was gone.. I would like to say this was the end of this but it was`nt.. This went on for three years till my Dad got married and moved us away.. I was scared it would follow me-IT DIDN`T !!! Not untill I was groan did I began to understand what happened... One thing I found out that the woman (Liz Scott) who lived there before my grandpa was a witch.. But I believe she was doing more that reading coffey grounds.. There had to be some evil thing going on for a house to attract that much evil... Another thing was.. I was gonna watch the movie Star Wars... In the very beginning there was this scene where these creatuers were at a bar.. As I watched this.. I saw both things there and one was a large white kangaroo.. I stopped the movie there and to this day have never watched it.. I said who ever wrote that part must know what evil spirits look like.. There were other event that went on in this three year period that I could write about.. I will leave them to another time.. Carol Barker Hall still in Cumberland, Ky. on Cloverlick rd. lola5341@setel.com
I know nothing about any "ghosttowns", but thought this sounded like an interesting list; therefore, I subscribed. My ancestors lived in the Russell/Clinton/Cumberland County area in Kentucky, and I was hoping for some interesting items, possibly from that section of the state. In that area, several towns/settlements no longer exist, and could be considered "ghosttowns". Two that come to my mind are Ida, and Browns Cross Roads -- both in Clinton County. Many cemeteries no longer exist because of the building of Dale Hollow and Cumberland Lakes. Maybe someone knows, and could tell, stories about those areas. I for one would like to see some activity on the list!! Fred, I used to take a young girl home from some school activity at night. She lived quite a way out in the country on a county road. Every time I took her home on a dark rainy night, we would see something white appear ahead of us on the banks and bushes along the sides of the road. They would be there and then gone in a second. They looked like what we see in movies or TV that is supposed to be ghostly figures. What could they be? I had never seen them anywhere else. Finally, we figured out that they were reflections from our headlights in small puddles of water along the edges of the road. Most of the time, there is a good explanation for our "ghosts". RootsWeb is in the process of switching over to new upgraded list management software. This list has been switched. For list subscribers, the changeover should be smooth. The changes primarily involve the administration tools that keep the list running behind the scenes. The list name is changing from LISTNAME-L to just LISTNAME. So you may subscribe or unsub by sending your request to: LISTNAME-request@rootsweb.com with one exception. If you wish to subscribe in Digest mode you must send your subscribe request to LISTNAME-D-request@rootsweb.com . You may also continue sending your requests as you always have--either will work. The word SUBSCRIBE or UNSUBSCRIBE must be included in the subject and may also be included in the message body. Digest subscribers will notice some changes to the list digests. New instructions will be added to the digests -- please read them. In addition, the digest volume and issue number may be different (out of sequence) from what you had been receiving. If your digests arrive in a different format than you are used to and you would like it changed, contact me privately at the list admin address: LISTNAME-admin@rootsweb.com. Also, if you run into any unusual or confusing occurrences with mail from this list that could possibly be related to the changeover, let me know. If you use email headers to filter list mail to a special folder in your email program you may need to check whether your filters will need tweaking under the new system. If you previously subscribed to the list in both L and D modes using the same email address you will find that you are no longer subbed in Digest mode. The new software doesn't permit the same address to be subbed in both L and D modes. Therefore, if you wish to receive both modes, you will need to subscribe to the digests using a different email address. Please continue to send your queries, data, and responses to the list as usual. It is a great time to post a new query to try to break down those brick walls. Thanks! Georgi, I was not searching for all Miamisburgs. The search was limited to Kentucky. Until you have proof that my staterment is incorrect, back off. Georgi, the name returns 50 hits just for Kentucky and may be in the hundreds nationwide. Of course, these include such things as Miamisburg creek, church, school, etc. There are plenty of Miamisburgs in Kentucky, in Knott, Pike, Carter, Boyle and other counties. Which Miamisburg is the correct one for this research? Miamisburg returns 50 hits in just Kentucky alone. You need more information to be able to judge which Miamisburg is the one you want. Well, I am well aware of Miamisburg in Ohio, but in 1833 there could have been a Miamisburg in KY also - which is why I am writing to the ghost towns mailing - hopefully someone may know if there was. B. Until Hermit-in-the-Woods can show his proof that Miamisburg is in south eastern Ky in Montgomery Co., ..........Miamisburg is still in Ohio. Georgi
Thanks - I'll check that area out.
Until someone finds the town this subject is CLOSED 10 AM Thur. All further comments on the subject are to go through me at: KY-GHOSTTOWNS-admin@rootsweb.com I will then post them to the mail list.
According to "A Guide to Kentucky Place Names" by Thomas P. Field, there is a Miami, KY, in Green County. Perhaps there was a little settlement or section near that called Miamisburg at the time. That has been a long time ago and names change. I believe the above book can be found online.
