Their graves were documented by the Mason County Genealogical Society, and are included in the book titled "Historical Collection, Williamsburg/Orangeburg, Mason County, Kentucky," privately printed in 1996 by the Orangeburg Bicentennial Committee (sections titled "O'Cull-Davenport Cemetery" and "O'Cull Family"). Mary Starrett's death certificate (KY Vol: 30 Cert: 14538) appears to give the death date as 1919, but her obituary and headstone confirm the 1918 date. She was born Jan 27, 1888 in Kentucky, the child of Edward Davis O'Cull (Jan 2, 1856-Oct 25, 1935) and Phoebe J. Phillips (Oct 10, 1863-Jan 6, 1926), who are both buried in the same location. Mary had a sister Maude O'Cull who died about the same time.

It is located on Cemetary Road. I don't believe there is any listing on the internet for the cemetary. I lived there as a child and this is a large, old cemetary. I wish I had some contact organization or person for you. You might try the courthouse and talk to someone there.

Just for the record, I've never heard of an Okolona Cemetery, but I've run across this question once before. According to the book "Wilderness Road Cemeteries of Kentucky, Tennessee and Virginia" by Robert Foster Johnson, there is Evergreen Cemetery in Okolona, which is the big cemetery. The book also lists two others gravesites for Okolona. They have no official names that I know about. I list them quoting from the book: "No. 122 - Unknown located in Okolona, in Jefferson County, owned by Charles Kuhn, located on Chesley Ave., which is off High School Lane, which is off Preston Highway about one half mile southeast of Southern High School. Once about 100 graves, now only about 5 left." The five surnames stones left are Martin, Wright, Woods, Hassenflack, and another Martin. "No. 124 - Owner, Jack Durrett, located in South Central Jefferson County, on Preston Street Highway in center of Okolona, one half mile of Southern High School and at side of Arch Heady Funeral Home on spot 100 ft. north of street and behind Esso Gas Station, about 40 graves." The books lists 5 burials belonging to the Beeler and Gilmore families. Just for the record, this book was published in 1981 and the partial transcriptions were done some time before that, so don't take stock in the owners above still being the owners. At least you have a general idea of where these cemeteries are located. Surely one of them was Okolona Cemetery, but I don't know which one is which. Wish I had more details, but I don't. One is listed as VanAlstine and the other as VanAlstyne. They were my great great grandparents also.

Good Morning, During a recent visit to Kentucky, I photographed the stones at Combs Cemetery, in Whitesburg, Letcher County. I then transcribed those stones to the best of my ability, considering some of the photos didn't come out like I had hoped. (Viewing digital photos on a camera in the sunlight is rather difficult! <grin>) In any event, I do plan to go back and "clear up" the photos and do a diagram of the cemetery to include. A good resource for cemeteries in Kentucky is from the Kentucky Historical Society. http://162.114.3.83/cemetery.asp It doesn't cover every cemetery, but they are constantly adding new information. As it is, the database is very extensive. Well worth the time to do a search. Sincerely, Pat
