    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/wS.2ADIAE/345.1 Message Board Post: According to the "Kentucky Encyclopedia": p. 209: COAL MINING - In the antebellum period immigrant miners, mostly from the British Isles, arrived. The first known coal camp was built at Peach Orchard in Lawrence County. p. 211: COMPANY TOWNS - In Kentucky, the term company town is strongly identified with the coal industry.....Early company towns in Kentucky include Airdrie (1853), an iron town populated by Scots on the Green River near Paradise in in Muhlenberg County, and Peach Orchard (1845), just north of Prestonsburg on the Big Sandy River's Levisa Fork. p. 722: PIKE COUNTY - Before Pike County was formed on December 19, 1821, it had been, in succession, a part of Fayette, Bourbon, Mason, and Floyd counties. The county was named for Gen. Zebulon M. Pike, the U.S. Army officer and explorer who discovered Pike's Peak. The first session of the county court met on March 4, 1822, at the home of Spencer Adkins on the Levisa Fork near the mouth of Russell Fork. On March 25 a permanent county seat was selected at a site to be called Liberty, about a mile and a half below the mouth of Russell Fork. Opposition by settlers north of the Levisa led to a decision the following year to relocate the set on Elijah Adkins's land on Peach Orchard Bottom, across the Levisa from the mouth of Lower Chloe Creek. Looks like there WERE two Peach Orchards.

I was wondering if anyone knows where Camp Peach Orchard was located. As I have heard there may be some of my husbands ancestors who fought in war, buried there, but I have also read that there may be 2 locations called Peach Orchard. One I remember reading, was located in Jonancy, KY. The other one, I`m not sure. We` re going to KY in October and I`d really like to find this cemetery. Thanks in advance for any help.

    1. Scalf-Howard Cemetery Cleanup
    2. Cassy Sommers
    3. I Am organizing a clean-up at the Scalf-Howard Cemetery on Turkey Creek in Knox County. This is a very old cemetery and in need of a good cleaning. It has been taken care of until about three or so years ago when the lady taking care of it could no longer do so. It will only take a day to clean (or so I hope) there is a couple of trees down and lying on graves and stones so these will need to be cut. We have at least one person willing to haul away the wood for winter usage but if more people are willing to help, I'm sure there is plenty to go around. The clean up is planned for September 4 2004. Anyone who is interested or can lend a hand please contact me at foe3643@mac.com This is a cemetery that needs to be cleaned up now before it is lost like so many been before. To help perk a little interest here is a list of surnames buried in the cemetery, it is not a complete list by all means but a start: Scalf, Howard, Mills, Messer, Valentine, King, Gambrel, Gibson, Womblems, Broughton, Jones, Honeycutt, Lawson, Miller, Black, Johnson, Williams, Doziers, Fortney and many more buried here. Not to mention that some of the readable stones date back into the 1880's. For those who don't know where the cemetery is located, it is not hard to find very close to US 25 in Barbourville on Turkey Creek. If you can help please let me know ASAP so we can organize drinks and possible lunch. Cassy. foe3643@mac.com Since this is my first posting to the list thought I would also plug my web site Tombstone Central it can be found using any good search engine and typing in "Tombstone Central" or click on the long link below. -- 1. Perhaps they are not stars but rather openings which our loved ones can shine down on us. 2. Did you know in Kentucky it is illegal for a woman to marry the same man four times? 3. A law in Kentucky also forbids a housewife to move the furniture in the home without her husbands consent. TOMBSTONE CENTRAL http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~foe3643/

I located the section but unfortunately there were very few stones and not one for Daniel. I talked with a caretaker and the section he is buried in is a children's section that historically had few stones. I took a picture of the area but I haven't had a chance to recharge my camera batteries so I can get the photo onto my computer. I will email it to you directly this week. Kerry
