The last that I'd heard was that the southern boundary of Ohio is the low water mark of the Ohio River in 1792 which gives Ohio just a small portion of the river but both states have the right to monitor/patrol to enforce the law.
Bill, rather than me confusing you with my limited knowledge, I suggest you go to http://users.rcn.com/deeds/metes.htm where there's a pretty good explanation of it. Coming from Ohio, where they use the township method and having had surveys done there during property purcheases, it was a little difficult for me to understand property descriptions down here. But, it works, that's all that matters. :-) ----- Original Message ----- From: <KY-CEMETERIES-D-request@rootsweb.com> To: <KY-CEMETERIES-D@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, April 24, 2005 4:00 AM Subject: KY-CEMETERIES-D Digest V05 #49

Bet you don't know what that is, do you? :-) Can you tell me something about this "metes and bounds surveying system"? I've lived in Kentucky almost all my live and have never heard of it. Of course, I'm not a surveyor, but you probably had already figured that out. Bill
This is correct. I live 60 miles north of Kentucky and have crossed the line from time to time ; ) pretty often, that is. The Kentucky border is as soon as you leave Ohio land and they have the whole river. I had the term mixed up, it's County Judge Executive. Counties are the basic unit of government in Kentucky. And the county legislative body is the fiscal court, who is chaired by an elected County Judge Executive, sort of like the county's CEO (chief executive officer). This individual goes by the title Judge, but actually has no judical powers. The Judge Executive oversees the county's business and financial affairs. Local government is done a little differently here in the Commonwealth. But, it works just fine, the roads are paved, water is treated, garbage is picked up, and taxes are collected. I don't regret crossing the river at all. I enjoy living in Kentucky. And you do know, of course, that Kentucky owns the Ohio River, right? ----- Original Message ----- From: <KY-CEMETERIES-D-request@rootsweb.com> To: <KY-CEMETERIES-D@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, April 23, 2005 2:00 AM Subject: KY-CEMETERIES-D Digest V05 #48
Kentucky owning the Ohio River is news to me. You may be right. I always assumed they owned to the middle. May I add my assumptions are usually wrong. The Kentucky River at one point was managed the locks on the river but the Federal Government turned the locks over the Kentucky government who decided to cost too much to operate - welded the locks shut and now there is no river traffic on the river. The lock houses were all torn down except the one at Boonesboro which was kept open as part of the historical there. ----- Original Message ----- From: "H.D." <olhmd@adelphia.net> To: <KY-CEMETERIES-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, April 23, 2005 7:54 AM Subject: [KY-CEM] County Judge Executive >I had the term mixed up, it's County Judge Executive. > > Counties are the basic unit of government in Kentucky. Townships are an Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania thing and maybe some other states. But, there are no townships in Kentucky. They use the metes and bounds surveying system. I am a transplanted Buckeye and I was also confused by the lack of townships until explained to me by the Judge County Executive. I can find plenty of listings for cemeteries, but not one I have found also includes the township!
