How you clean headstones depends on what type of stone you're dealing with.....and what works well for one stone can destroy another!! Some things like bleach on certain stones can recrystalize after you've left and lead to spalling of the surface of the stone. Bleach can also etch some types of stone. Best thing to start with is plain water and a natural bristle brush...used very gently! Some links I came up with from Google.... http://www.gravestonestudies.org/more_information.htm http://www.historictexas.net/cemeteries/1a/cleaning.htm Good luck!! On my family's stones I use Fantastic or 409 and a medium stiff brush. Then I rinsed the cleaner off with plenty of water. I do this on the marble and granite. There are no scratch marks on either. > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > > Surnames: Harrod,Armstrong > Classification: Query > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/wS.2ADIAE/409 > > Message Board Post: > > I have several old head stones i would like to clean up,and i don't want to damage them . Hi. I may be able to give you some basics based on AGS guidelines. I have restored about 4000 stones in the last 5 years, over 1200 in 2005. If you contact me offline I will try to help you with the do's and dont's. I had a recent 150 stone restoration at London,KY at Breastworks Hill Cemetery. The key is to not think you can do it all..sometimes it requires experience, knowledge, and deciding what is best for the stone, not just what is fast and easy. For more information, you might look under Koester/Kuster/Custer. My Ann Custer who married Frederick Miller went to Bardstown area of Kentucky very early, before 1815 and looking through the family yesterday, I found many variations of the spelling within in the family. Just a thought. Anyone know of the cemetery no longer to be found close to Louisville which was eliminated in favor of a truck stop? Where were the stones moved? Several of my HERD relatives/ancestors were said to have been buried there. Molly in California
