To: [email protected] From: Janet Reinhold <[email protected]> Subject: Serfass etc Dear Bill, I recognized Serfass as the name, from my Kunkel (etc) newsletter. You might want to check out our website for PA queries (you have to use the "find" or just scroll thru them, sorry!). Also I will send you a few items from our Kunkel-L queries. In my indexes for past Spindle issues, I see one Kunkel Family researcher whose ancestor at least lived in the same area as Philip Serfass--Monroe Co PA. "In the 1750's, present day Monroe County was, to quote the early settlers, over the mountains....White men first settled along the Delaware near Stroudsburg in the 1720's and by the 1740's a few were trying to establish farms in the western valleys which extended toward the Lehigh River. The 1750's brought the first strong wave of settlers, and the establishment of the first Moravian Mission Station. Men like Philip Serfass, Henry Christman, Nicholas Altemose, Conrad Kresge, George Van Buskirk, and Jacob Smith settled and made roots for their large families..." [p 102, Spindle, Vol 2 no 4, Oct 1996] from article written by Kunkle researchers Jean & Robert Rowland. Also, reference is made in "Kunkels of Lehigh County PA" which is an excerpt from the "History of Lehigh Co PA": "George Kunkel lived for a time in Lower Saucon Twp, in Lehigh Co, and while there married Sarah Dotterer. they moved to Polk twp, in Monroe Co PA, settling on a wild tract of land about half a mile from Kresgeville and on this land they built the first log house. He cleared the land and they lived there until their death. They assisted in building the Pleasant Valley Church. He died in the year 1855, at the age of 82 years, and she died in her 99th year. Their children were: Abraham, George, Elizabeth (m JOSEPH SERFASS, who had 21 children), Joseph, Barbara (m Aaron Schaffer), Kate (m. Abraham Christian), Dinah (m Adam Beer), Mrs. Winter, Susanna (burned to death when she was 18 years old), Mrs. Smith, Peter, Adam, John, and Sallie (m George Kresge)." (Capital letters & numerics mine.) [p 18, Spindle, Vol 2 no1, Jan 1996] I am also sending this query to the Kunkel-L mailing list to see if anyone else recognizes the names.
