    3. Vernon, According to this book I have by James Kunkle, he has "Johann (Hans) Kunkel, Juror at Floersbach, b abt 1620/30 in Hessen-Nassau, PRS". Can you tell me where you got "Hans Jacob"? I see that Wallace Kunkel has a "Hans Jacob" pp 49-50 of April 96 "Spindle." Do you know where he got that? Marilyn, Is this the Hans Kunkel you wrote about on pp 100-101 in the July 1997 "Spindle"? Set me straight--where does he fit in? Note: My comments are within [brackets]. 1. Jim Kunkle's Info
    2. Janet Reinhold
    3. I have been lately trying to use Jim Kunkle's Collection of Family Files to try to match up lines of Kunkel, Kunkle, Conkle, Gunkel etc. Because I'm a "slow learner" in many regards, today I have color coded them too (for my benefit I suppose!). Anyway, if anyone wants me to look anything up in the files, let me know and I will share what I have (from Jim's research & others as noted from his files). It is indexed by Location, and of course Jim's Family File number which I am only beginning to get used to. The color coding helps, but I ran out of colors and now use 1/2 of some with 1/2 of others. I have now 38 smiley faces of varying color schemes! Jim has 13 family files with known immigrants (families before 1800), 21 unconnected lines, and 4 lines he calls "Families in America after 1800." Here's a quote from a letter from Jim Kunkle to me in April (slightly edited): "Yes, I've heard of the Internet, and the term Web Page. All a part of a computer. No, I don't have anything but this House full of Binders in every room of my house & now my Bedroom too (smile), and this Electric Typewriter. I'm all the time asking Folks who have a computer, and who get on the Internet (or whatever), to tell folks about ME, and my Mountain (House-full) of Records, and share with me what they have, as I'd do the same for them. Or Send me their "Mailing Address," and I'll write to them. An "email" address don't help me. I need to put a postage stamp on an envelope (smile)." 2. Janet, For someone who doesn't know much about computers, you seem to be doing a fine job and I wanted to say 'thank you.' As to the Hegeman name, I received my information from John Decker and James Kunkle and, yes, Anna Hegeman is listed on my info. I have my line done so far on my web page <http:www.geocities.com/Heartland/Meadows/5260> I hope all of Hollie's hard work is of benefit to someone and I would like verification on the line as I have not had time to get back beyond Emanuel for lack of time. In the same way, many items became names for the people who made them or used them frequently. The name Kunckel is typical of the names. >"It meant distaff," says George F Jones in the book, "German-American Names." My home dictionary shows the meaning of distaff as (1) a staff that holds on its cleft end the unspun flax, woo, or tow from which thread is drawn in spinning by hand; 2) a woman's work and concerns, 3) women in general, such as "the distaff side" meaning the female line or maternal side of the family. Jones' book goes on to say that the name came "from the Latin 'conicula.' > >Patrick Hanks' book, A Dictionary of Surnames, give the original name as Gunkel. Its meaning is given as "German, a metonymic occupational name for a spinner or a maker of spindles, from German Kunkel meaning 'spindle, distaff.' In the same year, he founded a factory in Potsdam where he developed the process for making a type of red or ruby glass, "Rubinglas," by the addition of gold chloride. This glass was of a particularly warm and attractive hue and ideally suited to being mounted in gold, silver-gilt or gilt metal. Most of the pieces attributed to Kunckel are undecorated and, in fact, mounted in these materials, and are generally luxury examples of useful objects which were purchased by the rich."--from 'The History of Glass,' ed by Dan Klein and Ward Lloyd (Orbis, London: 1984). > >We have some Indiana Kunkle researchers. 3. Submitted for Emily Dahlstrom "My ancestors come from the Mecklenberg Schwerin area of GER. There was a ship called the Holsatia which sailed from Hamburg and Havre (GER) to New York. It arr. 21 May 1874. On the passendger list, it mentions Fritz and Frederika Kunkel with their children Carl, Anna and Sophie. The information isn't quite right, but they COULD be my family members. "The father, Karl Frederick was called Frederick. The Mother's maiden name was pronounced HAWK, but was spelled HOAK or HOAKE. As the family grew, she became known as Grannie. She ended her years at the home of her dau Sophie BULL. "Karl Frederick and Frederika had 5 children. Only two of them married and produced children: Karl Frederick and Sophie. The oldest, Karl Frederick, was called 'Charles' in America, as the family was told there was no such name as Karl. Charles died before the age of 40, leaving 5 young children. "The family lived and died in Buffalo NY. "I'd like to know the parents and/or siblings of the parents of this family." 1. CONKEL 1850 WV (Dale's)
    2. Janet Reinhold
    3. Dale, I will be placing what I have on old John Conkle of Washington Co PA soon. Also will check db for matches. Am copying Barry Wood on this msg, also, & would like him or Norma Olson to submit something on Henry Conkle (1730-1821). If I don't hear from them I will show what I have on Henry (which is mostly all Norma's research). This Henry Conkle moved to Ohio Co. VA (now WV). Which county did George live in, and who was his wife? Do you know any of his siblings? How about John Conkle b 1880? What county? Wife? Any siblings? Janet >My name is Dale William CONKEL. I am interested in finding links to my grand >father Chester CONKEL (b 1900 in Ohio, d 1973), my great grandfather John >CONKEL (b circa 1880 in Ohio) and my great great grandfather Geo. CONKLE (b >circa 1850 in West Virginia). > >Any help would be great. >Thanks, Dale Janet Reinhold PO Box 4001 Covina CA 91723 Family genealogy at http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Hills/8878 Editor for the Kunkel Kunkle Conkle Gunkel "Spindle" Family Genealogy Newsletter at http://www.flash.net/~conkle/INDEX.HTM Fax: 626-915-0798 Email: [email protected] New: Listowner for [email protected] ==== KUNKEL Mailing List ==== To send a message to everyone, send it directly to: [email protected], or reply to an individual message and note "send to all recipients" or whatever your system has for this option.

    1. Roll Call & suggestions?
    2. Janet Reinhold
    3. Thanks to all of you who've subscribed! Would like to call a "roll call" for folks to send in their family lines at this time. What are you looking for? Can you share anything? There is a way for me to make the list design such that, if you just hit "reply" it will go to the list & not the person to whom you're replying directly. Since there isn't much traffic, I am thinking that this might help. Then again, it might be confusing to some who might think they were just talking to the one person and all of a sudden it's broadcasted. Suggestions? I am working on the ancestor book today. I hope to get it ready by the end of this week....Expect October's issue by end of October.... I am going through ALL files and trying to group families. Those of you with surnames A-C may have been contacted already, if I don't have anything recent from you. James Kunkle's information has helped immensely, but you need to add your information too, as you've found it. Of anyone, Jim Kunkle of Denver CO is closest to being family historian. He would like me to post his address: James E Kunkle PO Box 2999 Denver CO 80201 And, if you write to him, "be patient" as he always has a stack of letters to write. My address for posting is: [email protected] or Janet Reinhold PO Box 4001 Covina CA 91723 Janet Reinhold PO Box 4001 Covina CA 91723 Family genealogy at http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Hills/8878 Editor for the Kunkel Kunkle Conkle Gunkel "Spindle" Family Genealogy Newsletter at http://www.flash.net/~conkle/INDEX.HTM Fax: 626-915-0798 Email: [email protected] New: Listowner for [email protected] ==== KUNKEL Mailing List ==== If you have any problems with this list please contact Janet Reinhold, [email protected]

    3. Hi All Thanks Janet for hosting this list, it takes a lot of time and effort. I hope it stays informal as the Lists that require a certain format to submit is to hard to remember the format when you belong to more than one list. My Husbands Great GrandAunt Karolline Marie (Mary) Niemann married Peter Julius Kunkel on January 02, 1880 in Travis Co, TX. They had fourteen children before their divorce in 1905. Travis County, TX 1880 Census Page 073 household # 616 Julis Kunkel is a white male age 26 and married and works as a farmer. He listed his place of birth as Germany and his parents were born in Germany. Mary is listed as his wife,, a white female age 18, and was born in Germany, and her parents were born in Germany. Peter Julius Kunkel was born November 11, 1852 in Posen, Germany Karoline Marie (Mary) Niemann was born Apr 1, 1860 probably in Kratze, Hanover, Germany as her younger brother was. Peter Julius Kunkel and Gotlieb George Niemann (Mary Niemann's father) were the first settlers of the area of Mills County, TX that is now known as Priddy, TX. in 1884. Peter and Mary have the happy/sad distinction of having the first white babies born in the area and the first babies to die in the area, a set of twins that only lived 13 and 15 months. Information for this line is on my home page: under Texas Kin http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Plains/3927/ along with a surname index. I would like to find out if Peter Julius Kunkel and the Niemann Family had connections in Germany before coming to Texas. Here are all the Kunkels in the death index at the Mills County Courthouse in Goldthwaite, TX Death Index, Kunkel Name Sex Race AgeBook Page Date Kunkel, Mrs. Mary F W - C 139 April 9, 1926 Kunkel, Edita Emma F W 55 3, 392 November 30, 1942 Kunkel, Emilie Louise F Cau 84 4, 193 August 2, 1968 Kunkel, Adolph John M Cau 85 4, 212 November 11, 1968 Kunkel, Otto John M Cau 70 4, 236 April 13, 1969 Kunkel, Minnie Mary F Cau 97 5, 548 October 21, 1978 All the records for Kunkel at the courthouse belong to Peter Julius Kunkle family, I will check the variations of spelling at the courthouse, i.e. Conkle and see if there are any there the next time I go. Here is some census Information I found when I was looking for the above Peter Kunkle. and found a different one. Starr County, TX 1880 Census Page 399, no household # Rio Grande City, Dist # 6 Kunkel, Peter a white male age 26 and single occupation is Soldier and listed his birth place as Pennsylvania and his Parents were also born in Pennsylvania Just wanted to send something to the list, since Janet has volunteered for the task If anyone needs help in this area of Texas, just write, and I will see what I can do. To reply to these messages, I suggest you send it both to [email protected], AND to the original sender, since they may not be subscribed. That way they will not miss your message, but we may all be able to benefit from the added info. Thank you!
