    3. Hello Joan, Do you have any line continued for John Christian Kunkel (b. 1757) and wife Catherine Moyer? I have a John C. Kunkel (b. 1780-1785?) married to my 4th great aunt Mary Zulauf>Sulouff (b. Feb 1785), and am searching for John's parents. Mary's family lived in Newberry Twp., York Co. from at least as early as 1792 until 1802, when they moved to Milford Twp., (then) Mifflin Co. I do not have marriage information for John C. and Mary Kunkel, but the first of their four children, John C. Kunkel, Jr., was born before 8/23/1820. Their residence was in Harrisburg where John was an attorney. It is believed John became a congressman, but this is yet to be proven. Do you see any possibility of a connection with your Kunkel family? I thank you in advance for any help you provide. Nelson R. Kunkel who lived in the Hbg area in the first half of the 1800s. Instead of writing a completely new explanation to you, I am sending you a copy of a message I sent to Victor earlier today, before I received your message. Please consider what I have set forth about John C. Kunkel and let me know if you have any information or advice you think might help me. Thanks in advance, Nels __________________________ Quoted Message _____________ Hello Victor, I don't know what I might add to the knowledge of your Kunkel family right now, but it appears there is a very good chance we are working on the same family. I am working on John C. Kunkel, Esq., resident of the Harrisburg area in the first half of the 1800s. I would like to know if you want to compare notes and perhaps stay in touch. Here is some of the information I have collected so far. It is estimated from the age of his wife that John C. Kunkel was born about 1780-1785. About 1819 he wed Mary Zulauf, a resident of Milford Twp., (now) Juniata Co. Pa. Mary was born in Feb 1785 probably in Berks, though possibly in York Co., Pa. Mary's family moved from York Co. to (then) Mifflin Co. Pa. in May 1802, and about the same time the spelling Sulouff began to replace Zulauf as the family's name. The first child born to John and Mary Kunkel was named John C. He was born before 8/23/1820, because he was at least 21 years of age on 8/23/1841 when he signed a document connected with the probate of his grandfather Zulauf's estate. It is known from a family letter written in 1899 that at least one son of John and Mary was "born and raised" in the Harrisburg area. Mary bore three additional children (names not yet determined), presumably all in the Harrisburg area. They were minors and the court recognized their father as "guardian" of these three children when their mother died. Mary died at an early age in October 1828, and the inscription on her gravestone shows her husband's name as "John C. Cunkel, Esq." It is not known if her husband, John, remarried. There is no gravestone for John beside Mary's gravestone in Port Royal, Juniata Co. Pa. I have not yet had time to determine the names of John C. Kunkel's parents nor the place of his birth, nor have I had time to look for descendants of any of his four children. Do you have anything in your Kunkle records that will connect with my John Kunkel or his children? If not, do you see any possibility that my John C. Kunkel, Esq., or that one of his sons, might be a more distant great-grandfather of yours? I will be happy to share a lot of information on John C. Kunkel's wife, Mary Sulouff, and her ancestry, if it turns out you are her descendant. I was raised 50 miles north of Harrisburg and for many years was a professor at Gettysburg College, not far from Harrisburg, so I know the area fairly well. I am retired now in Arizona. I expect to make a trip to Pa. this coming Fall to do genealogical research and am hoping to find some helpful leads on John C. Kunkel's ancestry and descendants before I go back to Pa. Do you have any information you think might be helpful? For your information, the town of Goldsboro below Harrisburg is also shown on maps as "Etters." I don't know the history behind this unusual feature of the town's naming. Looking forward to hearing from you, Rev. Nelson R. Sulouff mailto:[email protected] http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Ranch/8094/ ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/pa/northumberland/xmisc/nels0001.txt

    2. Perhaps somewhere in the past? My gggrandfather born Germany appears in early SC USC as Henry Gooncall, the Henry Gunkel which finally was Kunkle/Conkle, my mother's maiden name - the family rested in Henry Co., GA. We don't know if Henry came directly from Germany to SC or to PA to SC - that's our mystery at this point. If I'd had my rathers my husband and I would have retired at Murphy. Hope you like it as much as we did the four years we lived there. By the way, I have a BellSouth Mobility cell phone for emergency purposes mostly. Happy hunting! Jo Wilkes

    3. Hi, Jo, By all means, please do let me know the next time you plan to be in the Murphy or Brasstown area, and possibly we can get together and compare notes. My people spelled it Gunkle and Gunkel in the later generations, but in some of the earlier records it is Kunkle or Kunkel. Mine were from the Berks and Lancaster county area in Pennsylvania, then to Indiana and later to Illinois. I was born and raised in Illinois, moved to Florida in 1963, and to Murphy just a week and a half ago. Howard Groff ([email protected])
