Author: tomk171 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.kuehn/135.3.1.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: William, I recently sent you a response via USPS for a comment you made on my website this year concerning Frank Anton Kuehn and Amelia Krebs. Like you, my Kühn ancestors also settled in greater St. Clair County, Illinois area in the mid 1850s. I am adding a response to this post for others also looking for Kühn / Kuehn from Baden Germany area. Within Baden, the town of Ötigheim / Oetigheim has many Kuehn still today. I knew from the gravestone of my 2nd Great-Grandfather that he was from Ötigheim in the Grand Duchy of Baden. He was the son of Ludwig Kühn and Sophia Kelmel. About 3 years ago, I spent time going through reels of microfilm containing German Church book records at a Local LDS Family History Center to find my ancestors. The films can be found on FamilySearch.org at: https://familysearch.org/search/catalog/295128. There are many Kühn entries on every page or two, and without index you have best luck searching only for the years you are confident of. The writing is in old German Script, and very difficult to read without the assistance from someone who can read this script. I was lucky to find such a person in Germany to help me. Recently, Germany has published these same records on the their internet site at: https://www2.landesarchiv-bw.de/ofs21/olf/struktur.php?bestand=12390&sprungId=2557563&letztesLimit=suchen Fr. Anton Kühn and Amelia Krebs can be found at the above German URL on the 390 no 4109 volume. 1) Fr. Anton Kühn baptized 12 Oct 1829, Ötigheim - picture 125, Bapt # 56 - parents: Nikolaus Kühn and Maria Anna Welz. 2) Amalia Krebs baptized 12 Oct 1830, Ötigheim - picture 131, Bapt# 57 - parents: Ludwig Krebs and Christina Nold. They both are within pages of my 2xGGF Lukas Kühn - picture 126 #64 - baptized 24 Nov 1829. Perhaps this will help other Kühn/Kuehn emigrants from Baden to the USA find their German born ancestors. I have figured out his whereabouts for the date range but not where he came from which I only know is Saxony, Prussia (Germany). Also he had a first born son named William F. born in Buffalo in 1848, another son Charles in 1850 but I can not figure out where they lived between 1848-1856, nor when he married (Marie Elizabeth), nor his immigration date. Marie (wife is from Wurtenberg, Prussia. I think the elders first name may be Ferdinand Wilhelm. Also don't know if he was related to the other Kuehn's in the Buffalo City directory from that period. I noticed the family name is misspelled frequently. Are all Kuehn's from the same area in Germany? Does the name have a meaning in German? Does anyone have these names in their family tree? They settled in Ohio later moving to around Louisville, KY. Both brothers were Jacquord Loom Weavers. FA moved to Terre Haute, and retired becoming a vitner. CL settled in Oldham, KY and had at least one daughter named Amelie. They left behind at least two brothers and an uncle in the old country (Johann Georg Friedrich and Karl Ferdinand). Several sisters came to America later, all to Terre Haute. And there is a Karl Traugott Kuehn who latter came to America (with one of the sisters), although we have no idea how he relates. South of Culten is a place called Hartmansdorf with another Kuhn family I have yet to research...frankly, there seem to have been many other Kuhn families in this area, but I have yet to research them. Culten was sold about 1871, since there were no sons to inheirit it: The proceeds went to bringing FA's nephew to America, and provinding him a trade as a tobbacconist.
