"The Kansas City Times" (Missouri) Saturday, December 9, 1911 A SWORD THAT HE'S PROUD OF. One of the treasures of William G. MOSELEY, city salesman for the Ryley-Wilson Grocer Company, who lives at 123 Park Avenue, is a sword which was given to Priestly N. O'BANNON, a great-uncle of Mrs. MOSELEY by the state of Virginia for his service during the war of United States with Tripoli. Mr. O'BANNON was a color bearer and planted the flag on the ramparts of the city of Derne, in Africa, in the siege of that city in 1805. He was the first American to plant the American flag on foreign soil. The sword has been handed down from generation to generation. Mrs. MOSELEY was the daughter of Lieut. Col. George T. COTTON of the Union Army. He was killed in the battle of Stone River. ====================================================== (I have no connection with this family but I'd appreciate knowing if you found this posting helpful.) johnobrien@kc.rr.com ======================================================
