"The Kansas City Times" (Missouri) Saturday, August 12, 1911 DEATHS IN KANSAS CITY. Julius Hugo WUERZ, 60 years old, died at the home of his son-in-law, Frank KIEKBUSH, 6204 East Tenth Street, yesterday afternoon. In 1858, with his parents, Mr. WUERZ came by boat from St. Louis. There were no railroads here then. In the same year his father, Augustus WUERZ, started the first newspaper in Kansas City, called the Missouri Post, printed in German. The father was a stanch Republican. In the tumultuous days of 1861 and 1862, when the rebels had control of Kansas City, the family was forced to move temporarily to Wyandotte for safety. The little Washington hand press which printed the Missouri Post was also moved over into Kansas, but the editor and his son, then a boy of 10 years, brought the papers back to Kansas City, Mo., and delivered them to subscribers. It was the proud boast of father and son that the paper never missed a publication during the stormy days before and during the war. John BROWN was an intimate friend with the WUERZ family and took an interest in Julius. When Kansas City was threatened by bands of guerrillas, Julius shouldered a gun along with his father. Augustus WUERZ was one of the eleven citizens of Kansas City to vote for President LINCOLN. Julius WUERZ became the same stanch Republican that his father was. He held an office in the sanitary department under the JONES administration. In 1868, the Missouri Post was changed to the Kansas City Presse, a German paper now circulating in Kansas City. Augustus WUERZ became its editor and Julius WUERZ assisted him. Until he became ill of paralysis two years ago, he was superintendent of the plant. He was an honorary member of the Kansas City Turnverein and had been a Kansas City Turner for fifty-three years, joining shortly after its beginning. He is survived by three children, Mrs. KIEKBUSH, Mrs. Daisy GOE, Olathe, Kas., and Hugo WUERZ. Funeral services will be held at the Wagner undertaking rooms at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon. Burial will be in Forest Hill cemetery. ====================================================== added info: Julius was born on 4 September 1850.
