I can take you back to William G's father, William D., b. 1808 in VA, and forward thru William G's son James William (my granddad). HOFFMAN, William D(1) : 1808 -1881 1808 William D. HOFFMAN was born 25 October 1808 in Virginia. His parentage is unknown. Occupations and naming patterns of William and his descendants suggest that he was related to the HOFFMAN/HUFFMAN family that immigrated to Virginia in 1714 at the invitation of Governor SPOTSWOOD. 1828 We believe William's first record of appearance was in the Virginia Marriages Index of 1746-1850. The database includes the listing of the William "HUFFAMAN" marriage to Fanny MITCHELL in Orange Co., Virginia, on 23 June 1828. These are their children: Elizabeth R. HOFFMAN, born 1835 in Virginia; married George W. KING; died 1914 in Washington DC Mary E. HOFFMAN, born 1839 in Virginia; died 7 August 1859 in Washington DC. William Griffin HOFFMAN, born 1839 in Virginia; married Agnes Bridget SHEEHAN; died 31 December 1898 in Washington DC. Martha A. HOFFMAN, born 1840 in Virginia; married Benjamin F. HUNT; died 1910 in Washington DC John W. HOFFMAN, born 1841 in Virginia; never married; died 17 November 1892 in Washington DC. James Andrew HOFFMAN, born 1845 in Virginia; married Mary Louise BELL; died 1906 in Washington DC Lucy J. HOFFMAN, born 1846 in Virginia; married MOBLEY Cordelia HOFFMAN, born 1848 in Virginia; died before 1860 1840 In the 1840 census, William appeared as W. D. HUFFMAN, living in Madison Co., Virginia: W. D. HUFFMAN 2 FWM (free white males) under 5 (William G and unknown child); 1 FWM 30 < 40 (William D.); 2 FWF (free white females) under 5 (Mary and Martha); 1 FWF 5 < 15 (Elizabeth); 1 FWF 30 < 40 (Frances); 1 member of the household in Manufactures and Trade (William was a miller). 1850 William next appeared in the 1850 Federal census for Orange Co., Virginia, as William D. HUFFMAN, head of family, age 40, miller. His wife, Frances, was 41. Children in the home were: Elizabeth, 16; Martha, 14; Mary E, 12; William, 10; John, 8, James, 6; Lucy J, 4; Cordelia 2. Also in the home was Mary J. AMOS, 9, relationship unknown. All members of the household were born in Virginia. 1855 About 1855, William moved his family to Washington DC. 1860 In the 1860 census, William was found living in Ward 2, Georgetown, Washington DC, as William "HOFMAN", head of family, 58, carpenter, born in Virginia. The household included his wife, Frances, 56, seamstress, and the following children: E. R., 25, seamstress; M. A., 20, miller (milliner? M. A. was Martha A.); W. G., 16, student; J. W., 14; J. A., 13; L. J., 12. All members of the household were born in Virginia. The Worldwide Masonic Directory, 1860 listed William HOFFMAN, miller, in Georgetown, DC as a member of Potomac Lodge, Post ID 571. 1863 William's wife, Frances, died in November 1863 in Georgetown, Washington DC. She was interred in Oak Hill Cemetery, Georgetown, site #3, Lot #457, on 27 November 1863. Her age at death was listed as 52. 1869 About 1869, William met Susanna, maiden name not known. No marriage record was found. They had the following children: Alphonso E. HOFFMAN, born 17 November 1869 in Frederick Co., Maryland; died 12 January 1873 in Washington DC Osceola HOFFMAN, born 1874 in Washington DC Nannie HOFFMAN, born 1875 in Washington DC Maud HOFFMAN, born 1877 in Washington DC; married Harry J. SMITH 1870 William could not be found in the 1870 census. 1880 In this census, William and his second family lived at 475 10th Street NW, Washington DC. He was listed as William D. HOFFMAN, head of family, 71, occupation - at home, health - asthma, nativity - VA, nativity of parents, VA. Susanna, 37, appeared as his wife. Her occupation was keeping house, nativity - VA, nativity of parents, VA. There were three children in the home: Osceola, 6, daughter; Nannie, 5, daughter; and Maud, 3, daughter. Nativity of the daughters was Washington DC; that of their parents was VA. 1881 William's death certificate indicates that his death occurred on 8 May 1881. His age at death was listed as 72 years, 7 months. His occupation was entered as "Miller". His birthplace was listed as Virginia. The nativities of his parents was "U.S." The duration of William's residence in DC was 26 years. The place of death was shown to be Mt. Alto, Georgetown Heights. The immediate cause of death was paralysis of the heart. The duration of his last sickness (hours) was not legible. The place of burial was entered as Oak Hill, the date of burial was 10 May 1881. The undertaker was J. F. Birch, whose place of business was Georgetown. Attending physician's signature was indecipherable. Obituary, the Evening Star, Monday, 9 May 1881, page 3: "HOFFMAN. At Mt. Alto, Georgetown Heights, May 8th 1881, William D. Hoffman, in the seventy-third year of his age. Funeral will take place tomorrow, the 10th inst., at 3:30 o'clock from the residence of his daughter, Mrs. Benj. F. Hunt, Georgetown Heights. Friends and acquaintances are respectfully invited to attend. Interment at Oak Hill." According to Oak Hill Cemetery Records, William was born in Virginia on 25 October 1808 and died at Georgetown 8 May 1881. His residence at death was listed as 906 10th Street, NW, Washington DC. His age at death was listed as 72 years, 7 months. Disease - paralysis of the heart. Marital stated was listed as widowed. He was buried 10 May 1881, site #3, Lot #457. Would love to have info re the Parker family. This is what I have for William G: HOFFMAN, William Griffin (2) (William D (1)) : 1839 - 1898 1839 William Griffin HOFFMAN was born 1839 in Virginia. He was the son of William D. HOFFMAN and Frances MITCHELL. 1840 - 1860 See "HOFFMAN, William D: 1808 - 1881", page (?), for information about William Griffin in these censuses. 1861 - 1869 At age 23, William enlisted into Boyd's Company, 1st Battalion DC Militia on 18 April 1861 for three months. Boyd's Company was organized at Washington DC for defense of the city 13 April 1861. William mustered out 18 July 1861 as a Sergeant. On 10 January 1862, he accepted an appointment as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 3rd US Cavalry. A letter from the Department of the Army, Office of the Adjutant General, dated 30 January 1952, concerning the record of Lieut. William G. HOFFMAN states that William was promoted to 1st Lieutenant on 17 July 1862. He served at Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas January - March 1862; New Mexico March - October 1862; Army of the Potomac October 1862 - April 1863; Little Rock Arkansas June - September 1865, where he was cashiered for drunkenness 6 September 1865 by sentence of court-martial at Little Rock Arkansas. He received a presidential pardon on 20 February 1869. 1870 In the 1870 census for Georgetown, Washington DC, William appeared as a 30-year-old single carpenter in the Benjamin HUNT household. (Benjamin was the husband of William's sister, Martha.) William's younger brother, James A. HOFFMAN, 24, beef butcher, also lived in the home. An article appearing in the Washington Evening Star in the 1960's states that an exposed beam in the attic of the old Mt. Alto Hospital, 2602 Wisconsin Ave., bears the lettering, "William G. Hoffman, builder, May 5, 1870." This property was originally owned by the Benjamin HUNT family. 1871 On 9 February 1871, William married Agnes Bridget SHEEHAN, daughter of unknown SHEEHAN and Bridget SULLIVAN, in the parsonage at St. Aloysius Catholic Church, Washington DC. Agnes was born 1850 in Kerry Co., Ireland, and immigrated to the United States in 1860. The marriage ceremony was performed by Father B. A. Maguire, SJ, and witnessed by Wm. MAHER and Mary MAHER. These are William and Agnes' children: Anne Frances HOFFMAN, born 1871 in Washington DC; never married; died 1940 in Washington DC. James William HOFFMAN, born 15 August 1873 in Washington DC; married Marie Agnes FUSE in Washington DC; died 1961 in Prince Georges Co., Maryland. John Paul HOFFMAN, Sr., born 15 August 1873 in Washington DC; married (1) Mary Florence SWEENEY; married (2) Ruth Catherine JOHNSON. Benjamin Franklin HOFFMAN, born 1875 in Georgetown, Washington DC; never married; died 1947, location not known. Mary Ellen (Mae) HOFFMAN; born 1877 in Washington DC; married Thomas Dixon PARKER. George K. HOFFMAN, born 1881 in Washington DC; never married; died 1935 in Washington DC. Daniel HOFFMAN, born 1886 in Washington DC; married (1)Mary A. DAVIS in Atlantic City, New Jersey in 1910; married (2) Marie DeBEERS. No known children. HOFFMAN, born 1887 1874 William appeared in the Georgetown DC City Directory as a carpenter living at 138 K northeast, occupation: carpenter. 1877 In 1877, William requested clarification of ownership in lot #457, Oak Hill Cemetery. "Georgetown DC, Mch 22 1877. To the Board of Managers, Oak Hill Cemetery Co. Gentlemen, Having purchased jointly with B. F. Hunt lot number four hundred and fifty seven, I desire to obtain a separate deed for one half of the same, viz. The north half of said lot no. four hundred and fifty seven, and hereby make application for the deed as above-mentioned. There being some misunderstanding in regard to the ownership of the above lot, I ask your early consideration, and action on the same. Respectfully, W. G. Hoffman" 1880 William next appeared as the 40-year-old head of family in the 1880 census for Washington DC. His occupation was carpenter. Included in the household were his wife, Agnes, 30, occupation - keeping house, birthplace Ireland; daughter Annie F, 9; son John P, 7; son James W, 7; son Benjamin S, 5; daughter Mary E, 3. Birthplace of children was listed as Washington DC. 1890 - 1891 In the Washington DC City Directories of 1890 and 1891, William was listed as a carpenter living at 138 K Street NW. 1898 - 1899 A DC certificate of death was issued for William with the date of death listed as 31 Dec 1898. His age was listed as 60; his gender male, his color white, married, occupation carpenter. His birthplace and that of his parents were listed as Virginia. His address at time of death was 221 D Street NW, Washington DC, and the duration of his residence in DC was 50 years. The primary cause of death was listed as uraemia (following Bright's disease), with immediate cause of death heart failure. Duration of illness was three weeks. Attending physician was Lewis J. Battle, MD, 201 C Street NW. On Sunday, 1 January 1899, page 3, the Washington Post published the following obituary: "HOFFMAN - On Saturday, December 3`, 7:30 a.m., William G., the beloved husband of Agnes B. Hoffman. Funeral service from his late residence, 221 D Street northwest, Monday at 3:30 o'clock. Interment at Oak Hill Cemetery." William was buried at Oak Hill Cemetery, Georgetown DC, on 2 January 1899. Undertaker was J. William Lee, 322 Penna. Ave. On 5 January 1899, William's widow, Agnes, applied for a Civil War veteran's pension: "Name of Soldier: Hoffman, William G. Name of Dependent: Hoffman, Agnes B. Service: Boyd's Co. 1 Battln DC Inf. II Lt. K & A3, U. S. Cap. Date of Filing: 1889 July 31. Class - Invalid . Application No. 391,307. Certificate No. 712473. Date of Claim: 1899 Jan 5. Class - Widow. Application No. 689,443. Certificate No. 508,336. State from which filed: D.C. (Illegible): XC 2,671,462."
