In the 1950's and 1960's, my grandfather owned a farm in Bonner Springs. His name was Carl Rice. We lived in KCK and I remember driving out Parallel to get there. It was located on a highway and there was a railroad siding with a bridge and an abandoned box car on the far edge of the property away from the road. It was 640 acres (a section). There was a very large 3-story white house (no one ever lived there), along with a tenant farmer's house. (Their names were Jerry and Yvo.) In addition, there was a large barn, a smaller barn, an equipment shed, storm cellar entrance, and perhaps other outbuildings. My grandfather dammed a creek and created two lakes, one of which was on the right side of the road leading to the house. The other was off to the left somewhere. I remember a creek that may have been called Wolf Creek. Supposedly the house had been a drinking establishment (speakeasy?) called the White House. The living room had a raised stage-like area on one side. When my family did some remodeling, a gun was found sealed up inside a wall. The large barn (according to my mother) was a tobacco barn. You could raise corregated metal flaps to allow air to circulate to dry the tobacco. The farm was hit by tornadoes two years in a row, after which my grandfather sold it. I don't remember the date. If anyone knows anything about the location, history, present use, I would be most appreciative.
