So pleased that you found the roles. I have no idea how helpful the people at the Library are, but they should also help you look for a grave. I don't know about the practice in KS, but I can tell you that own property in MO that has shown my deceased mother's name on the tax roles for all the nine years after her death. When I tried to change, I was told that they do nothing in a joint ownership situation until someone sells the property. I feel quite sure that if they listed MA in 1869, then Henry died in 1868. And, yes, it is my experience that the women were listed on various documents with their husband's initials, long after their death.
