This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/HAB.2ACI/842 Message Board Post: I ordered 2 microfilms from the Kansas City Kansan only to find they didn't carry the obits I was looking for. I'd had help with some obits in the past and looked to see where those came from and it was the Kansas City Star from MO. Is there some insider knowledge that one should know as far as which papers will likely carry obits? I hate to be ordering and sending back as there are a lot of newspapers to pick from. Any help would be appreciated.
You didn't post where the people that you are researching lived. You might be able to get more specific info if the list knew exactly what neighborhood or community in Wyandotte county you are concerned with. Where you will find the obits for the Kansas City MO/KS area is really dependent on which funeral home the family used and which newspaper they read and wanted the obit in. Since the Kansas City Star/Times was and is the major paper for the area, it often will have the obits even when they are also in a KCK paper, simply because many funeral homes and families wanted as many people as possible to know about the death. But there are no rules that I've ever come across. One piece of info about the Star is that prior to about the 1970s, there were two daily papers printed in Kansas City, MO: a morning paper and an afternoon. So you should always check the Times(the morning paper) as well as the Star when you are researching prior to that time. The downtown KCK library has a pretty knowledgeable genealogy librarian. I suggest that you call or e-mail her for further information. http://www.kckpl.lib.ks.us/ And the Wyandotte County Museum now has a fulltime archivist who might also be helpful, especially if the family that you're researching lived in a county small town. http://www.wycokck.org/gen/wyco_generated_pages/Historical_Museum_m386.html Good luck, Patricia On 16 Jun 2006 19:24:40 -0600, frakon@cmsinter.net <frakon@cmsinter.net> wrote: > > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > > Classification: Query > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/HAB.2ACI/842 > > Message Board Post: > > I ordered 2 microfilms from the Kansas City Kansan only to find they > didn't carry the obits I was looking for.
