    1. Wyandotte County F. F. McCLURE - Kansas City, MO - June 1912
    2. John O'Brien
    3. "The Kansas City Times" (Missouri) Tuesday, June 25, 1912 RISQUÉ DANCES MUST GO. The turkey trot , the bunny hug, the grizzly bear, and all of the other newest and most lively dances, must go, according to the decision of F. F. McCLURE, superintendent of public recreation, board of public welfare, who has returned from an inspection trip of dance conditions in Eastern cities. "Kansas City must tolerate less of this class of dancing, if we are to maintain our standing among cities in this regard," said Mr. McCLURE. "Cleveland affords a better opportunity for study of municipal control of the dance halls than any other city in the country. There, 65 per cent of the population is foreign, and they have 135 public dance halls, with a weaker ordinance than ours. Yet conditions there are better than here. This is simply because they will not allow even a suggestion of risqueness to enter. We have always given the dance hall manager the benefit of a doubt." "From now on, however, the lines will be drawn more tightly. Nothing will be done, however, that will interfere with clean, moral dancing; but, we must stamp out this practice, which is growing among the boys, of having a flask of whisky between four or five of them and then attending a dance." ====================================================== (I have no connection with this family but I'd appreciate knowing if you found this posting helpful.) johnobrien@kc.rr.com ======================================================

    2. Jim Laird
    3. The Argentine Advocate Wyandotte County Saturday April 14, 1888 An old gentleman, whose white hair and tottering steps indicated a nearness to four score and ten, remarked that Argentine had great prospects for the future and that ere many years it would either be joined wholly to the great city of Kansas City or it would be a city of at least 20,000 inhabitants. "But," says he, "I wish the time would come when I could get a good sqaure drink of whiskey when I wants its, and not have to go clear to Kansas City for it."
