As we begin a new year, I thought it would be interesting to know a little something about us members, and maybe even help each other, so I'm requesting that you respond to this note with the following: Your location - city and state .......... or just state How you are connected to Wyandotte County What you hope to gain by being a member of the Mailing List =================================================== Perhaps someone on the List will be able to provide you with information. This will be more probably if you include dates and names in your response. For example, saying "my grandfather lived in KC" will not get much of a response but saying "my grandfather, John O'Brien, lived in Argentine in the 1920s" might produce a result. It's up to you how specific you want to be. There is, of course, no requirement that you participate. However, simply responding: "I live in California and lived in Kansas City, KS in the 1950s" would be acceptable. Thank you for your consideration. Thank you, John! Kate: I know Klamm Park well. Used to play tennis there during high school years at Wyandotte (graduated '46). Alma Klamm was my 4th grade teacher, and was she ever a stickler for correctness! (Hallmark of a good teacher, I presume.) She was a spinster but believe she was raising a nephew or grandson at the time who might have been Richard? That name has a familiar ring. My Stewart line came to Kansas before statehood, gr-grandfather Thomas George Stewart an official "pioneer" who established a farm in Princeton Twp, Franklin Co. His grandson, my father Walter L., was b. in Ottawa and moved first to Argentine (worked at Sinclair Refinery) then to KCK where I was born. My mother was a Fry from Argentine. That line originated in VA, moving first to KY then into MO, settling for a while around Weston and St. Joseph before moving to a farm in old Wyandott Twp. Henry W. Fry, my gr-gr grandfather, married Frances A. Young from Andrew Co, MO. Since moving from CA to WY 16-17 years ago I've made a real effort to visit cousins and other family members both in Lenexa, KS and in the Ottawa-Princeton area, always researching in court houses, libraries and varous other repositories. I read every line of every posting coming across this mail list, and thoroughly enjoy hearing everyone's stories. Marian Sarantha - WY P. We drove through there once on a trip to KC and recall a lovely main street in that town. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Kate & David Clabough" <dv121212@charter.net> To: <kswyando@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, January 06, 2009 3:22 PM Subject: Re: [Wyandotte County] Wyandotte County Mailing List > My (childhood) hometown is Holdrege, Nebraska, but I have been living in > Louisville, Tennessee since 1997. > > My Wyandotte County connection is through both my maternal and paternal > lines. 3. My (childhood) hometown is Holdrege, Nebraska, but I have been living in Louisville, Tennessee since 1997. My Wyandotte County connection is through both my maternal and paternal lines. My maternal grandmother, Alice Mack Turner, was born in KC, Wyandotte County in 1907 to Henry McNamara (later Mack) who emigrated to Wyandotte County from County Clare, Ireland in the 1870s, and Ida Mae Ryan Mack, who was born in either Leavenworth or Wyandotte County. Alice and my grandfather, Jesse Orville Turner (b. 1906, Columbia, MO) lived in Wyandotte County until they retired to the Lake of the Ozarks. My paternal line, the Klamms, emigrated from Mannheim, Germany to Wyandotte County in the 1860s. My granderfather, George Lewis Klamm (1899) son of John Christoper Klamm and Annie Heamann, and my grandmother, Bessie Elizabeth Storey Klamm (1899) daughter of Robert and Ida Odell Story lived in Wyandotte County until they retired to a farm near Louisville, Miami County, KS. There is a Klamm Park in KC, Wyandotte County created from land owned by a great something uncle, Peter Klamm. Both of my parents, Richard Klamm (1932) and Beverly Turner Klamm (1935), were born in Wyandotte County. I have gained much already by being a member of this list, but my ultimate goal is to trace my maternal great great grandfather, Michael McNamara, back to a township or parish in County Clare, Ireland. I also like piecing together the day-to-day lives of my ancestors - jobs, churches, social events, etc. Just how they lived and what they did. I find many of the postings by John and others to be a terrific insight into those things very things. ~kate ------------- > >> Hello, >> >> You are one of 94 members on the Wyandotte County Mailing List. >> >> As we begin a new year, I thought it would be interesting to >> know a little something about us members, and maybe even >> help each other, so I'm requesting that you respond to this >> note with the following: >> >> Your location - city and state .......... or just state >> >> How you are connected to Wyandotte County >> >> What you hope to gain by being a member of the Mailing List >> >> >> =================================================== >> >> Perhaps someone on the List will be able to provide you with >> information. 2. Hello . . . My connection is from about 1862 to 1895 ? ? My great grandparents John McLain ( 1831 ? to 1900 ? ) and Elizabeth Allen ( 1835 ? to 1900 ? ) originated in Fountain County, Indiana migrated to Leavenworth County, Kansas. . about 1858-1860 some child birth records ( aunts and uncles ) reflect being born in Stranger Township, Leavenworth County, KS and some in Loring, Wyandotte County, KS this is not impossible, since they are across the river from each other I show the family of having three boys and four girls I can track the boys fairly good but have no record of the girls.. There is different spelling of McLain / McLaine / MacLaine . . etc thanks for listening, G. 2. I'm in Columbia MO but lived in the KC area until 2002, My grandfather Harry Bronson McGonigal was raised by his childless aunt and uncle, Charles Samuel "Sam" and Annie Leota Cook McGonigal. Sam was Clerk of the Court of Common Pleas and later, Registrar of Deeds for Wyandotte County. Sam and Annie are buried in Woodlawn Cemetery (KCK) as is Annie's mother, Sarah Ann Nichols Cook, and her brother William Norval Cook. The Cooks came from Ohio. Sarah's husband Henry. a blacksmith, was in the state penitentiary at Lansing on the 1880 census and was a widower in Texas County, MO in 1900; Sarah died in 1896. I have some information on Annie's siblings. Surnames they married into are Lattimore, Allen, Pflager, Arendt, and Knight, Most moved to the Missouri side and died there in the 1930s. I'm also looking for more information on my uncle's family. His father was Walter Foster; mother is either Lala or Lola, probably Lola. Walter's father was Leonard; wife Malinda or Mary, possibly one of each. The family was in Wyandotte County from at least 1900 on, mostly in Argentine. Always willing to share what I have. 2. I remember reading years ago when the Mormon Church started on the east coast microfilming records from county seats. The article stated every state gave permission and purchased a copy for their own records. There was one exception Missouri did not purchase the copy offered. In a message dated 1/4/2009 9:49:22 P.M. Mrs. SODERSTROM had been employed by the fireman as housekeeper. Because Mr. LUNDEEN's children were neglected, the couple was summoned to appear in court. They said they would do better by the children in the future and expressed a desire to be married. "I think it would be well for you to be married," the judge said. "I'll marry you free if you want me to." The probation officer went with the couple to the recorder's office, where they procured a license. Then Judge McCune performed the ceremony. ====================================================== (I have no connection with this family but I'd appreciate knowing if you found this posting helpful.) johnobrien@kc.rr.com ====================================================== neirbo9 Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Tubercular patients in Wyandotte County may yet have a place to go to where they can get pure air and plenty of fresh eggs and milk. The commissioners of Kansas City, Kas., yesterday promised T. J. LYONS, county commissioner, the use of the farm and buildings formerly used for smallpox patients. Mr. LYONS said the county commissioners would make necessary changes in the buildings and furnish the food. There are six cottages on the 26-acre farm. The farm was used to isolate smallpox patients until three years ago. ====================================================== (I have no connection with this family but I'd appreciate knowing if you found this posting helpful.) johnobrien@kc.rr.com ====================================================== neirbo9 Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 1. [Wyandotte County] Miss Betsy GOSLIN & William WOOD - Kansas City, MO - November 1897
    2. John O'Brien
    3. "The Kansas City Times" (Missouri) Wednesday, November 24, 1897 ATTACKS HIS AUNT'S WILL. In the effort that William WOOD is making to break the will left by his aunt, Miss Betsy GOSLIN, many of that estimable lady's eccentricities are being brought out, to the great amusement of the throng of spectators who have been making themselves comfortable in Judge HENRY's court room for a day or two. It seems that when Miss Betsy passed away she left, among other tangible things, four houses on Cherry street, near Seventeenth. And as she had shown much regard for her nephew, William WOOD, having educated him and shown him many other favors, he naturally expected that he would fall heir to her earthly estate. But with the perverseness which seems to be common to maiden ladies of mature years, Miss GOSLIN, at the last moment, concluded to remember some of her other nephews, also her nieces, and when the will was read, William WOOD first learned the sad truth, that he had been cut off with eight shillings. Then William brought suit, alleging that his aunt was mentally unhinged when she made her will, and declaring further that the other relatives had exerted undue influence when inducing her to leave her property to them. He also averred that she had later repudiated the will, intending to make another and that, therefore, the relatives to be benefited hid the will, telling her that it had been destroyed. Miss Betsy had acquired her property by working for it and hanging on to what she got. Eighteen years ago she came to Kansas City and invested in real estate. When she died at 60, having successfully evaded the clutches of gentlemen matrimonially inclined, she had acquired numerous peculiarities, which are now being aired in Judge HENRY's court. Among other things brought forth to prove her lack of mental equilibrium, one witness testified that she was in the habit of donning all her winter clothes on the hottest days in summer, and then she would declare it was chilly. Occasionally she would retire for the night without taking the trouble to disrobe, even neglecting to remove her shoes. These and other oddities of manner and dress to which Miss Betsy was addicted let the children to dub her Mother Goose, much to her displeasure. ====================================================== (I have no connection with this family but I'd appreciate knowing if you found this posting helpful.) johnobrien@kc.rr.com ======================================================
