Lara: Not sure if we corresponded before or not. I do know a little about your family. Primarily the Brown's as Wash Brown and my husband's grandparents were very good friends. They all attened Piper High School and graduated in the 1920's. I believe there was a nancy and a Susie Brown as well. Yes the house still stands. I have been told it is listed with Kansas as a Historical landmark. I wish the current owners would do more to restore its beauty. In the 1970's I worked for a very short time as a secretary for Blake, Uhlig & Funk in Kansas City, Ks. My girlfriend got me on and I truly wasn't ready for the job. However, they were fun to work for and at that time Wash Brown still had his office at the Brotherhood building in KCK as well. As I research I will send to you any and all I find. Iwill be away from genealogy for a couple of weeks, but when I get back to it I will check my PIPEr and WYCO files. I know that I kept some tidbits that may be of interest to you. Yes she is still living here in the KC area along with three sisters. One additional lives in CA. The other three Carothers siblings have died. She has helped me out considerably with my family research and has many old letters of her fathers that relate to Wyandotte County and the KC area in general written in the early 1900's. Responding to John's questions: I live in Leawood, KS. My Wyandotte County connections go back to 1862 when my gg grandparents, John B. Herbold and Mary Louise Vaughn were married there. Then the Herbold line married into the Carothers line and were there up until just recently. I am still searching for Mary Vaughn's parents names by the way if anyone can help. I enjoy reading all postings of this site and hope connect with more people with similar family connections or family acquaintances such as Marian. Would she also have attended Northwest Junior High? My yearbook along with other personal items were burned (deliberately) in a bon fire of personal things from my father's house when he passed away, so I can't look up her photo. I was living in Virginia at the time and made it home for the funeral but alas, not for the burning, which I would not have tolerated. (I happen to be a genealogist, and these bon fire stories are rampant within the national community of family historians.) Have been trying for years to beg, borrow or buy a copy of my class yearbook but none have been available for me. So many memories, so much time lost. Is your mother still living? Our class size has dwindled dramatically and our smallish 60th reunion was held in 2006 at Wyandotte County Lake, along with the decision to make it our last. I'm so glad I was able to attend that one, and still correspond with a few classmates still living. Hi all , Here in North Carolina. My connection is through my Great-Grandparents - Harris and Dora Frankel. I am not sure how they ended up there - but I do know they remained for many years. I believe my great grandfather had a store there - but not sure. My Great - Grandmother, Dora died in 1906 of pu tuberculosis and Daniel Brothers Funeral Home took care of it. It lists her address on this certificate as 401 Kansas Ave - I am sure it is known as a different street name - but have not located it yet. *I had hopes when I had the name of the funeral home - however, the records prior to 1951 were lost in the flood of that year. I also have the graduation certificate from my grandmother when she graduated from Whittier Junior High School in 1919 (I Believe also known as 'the Junior High School'). I hope to one day find out more - about my family and their years lived there. Thank you to all - and to John for all you do to make this information sharing possible. The article stated every state gave permission and purchased a copy for their own records. There was one exception Missouri did not purchase the copy offered. In a message dated 1/4/2009 9:49:22 P.M. That has preserved history, helped students, authors, genealogist and many others with research. There are court records in the County Court Clerk's Office of each county, of each state, that give the Partitions for Sale which names all members of families and lots more information. Many of us buy rolls of this microfilm and the states will receive dividends of this for years. The 1930s material is being sold and used today. This is a win-win situation for everyone and returns money to government. It will pay it's own way and can begin immediately. Please apply and let the President's Stimulus Package do this. I recently found a paper record (Partition for Sale) of 1832 in Kershaw County, S. C. that I had looked thirty years for. I saw lots of records that named families. Please email the first paragraph of this email to any government official, historical society, genealogy society you can think of plus the genealogy friends in your address book so they can send it on. There are lots of good records out there that are crumbling and need to be preserved. I found some that were in 1790 naming children and division of property. They must not crumble more. My personal connection to Wyandotte County, Kansas, is minimal. I went to a meeting at the University of Kansas in summer 2000, flew into and out of the airport in Kansas City, Missouri, and so drove through or around Kansas City, Kansas. BUT, I'm the "convener" of the Van Scoy-Knapp reunion of descendants of four related couples who lived in Huron County, Ohio, in the first half of the 1800s. (I was born and grew up there.) Abraham VAN SCOY (1788 NY - 1849 OH) and his wife Mary KNAPP (1795 NY - 1883 OH) (my great(3)-grandparents) had 13 children. My mom and dad graduated from Washington HS in KC...as did some of my aunts and uncles. I think they...or at least Dad...attended Vance Elementary. I believe Grandma Alice attended Everett School. I've been to a handful of reunions and anniversary parties at Wyandotte County Lake. I have photos of some of those too. In fact, I have all sorts of old Wyandotte County photos or photos of family living in Wyandotte County. :) I need to get my husband to put my website live so I can post a bunch of them. ~k ---------------- > Indeed I do remember her -- more specifically, the name, since our class > was > quite large for its time. Hi John, Yes, I have a copy of the story that appeared in "The Consolidated...History," though not the book. I did some digging a while back and found some discrepencies in the chronology/genealogy written there. I haven't taken the time to document them as of yet. I've been too busy wrestling with the McNamara/Mack clan. ~k ------------------ > Kate, in the book "The Consolidated Ethnic History of Wyandotte County" > by > Loren L. John: I dived to recover the book to read about Klamm Park but found it's barricaded by a stack of genealogy files in racks fronting a wall-to-wall bookcase, so that will have to wait. I'll google instead, and thanks for recommending it. We must have purchased our books at the same time. At least it's the same story--few books left for purchase--and now that I think of it, it was probably on your mail list that I learned of the book. I remember scrambling to telephone the book's author, and maybe also bought the last three available. We have enjoyed it so much! Marian, it's on page 278 of the book. It's a fantastic book. Too bad it's out of print. There were only a few left when I bought mine several years ago. I spoke with the author and he did not think there was enough of a demand to justify another printing of the book. If you Google : Klamm Park, you'll get tons of hits! Marian, I think I may have a photograph of Alma Klamm somewhere. I have no idea how she would be related to us, but I'm sure she is. The Richard Klamm she would have raised would NOT have been my father, but I'll ask him if he knew of another in the family. Dad and Mom moved to Holdrege in about 1958ish. Mom died in 1989, but Dad still lives there. The downtown is really drying up, but they just built a huge YMCA, community theater and veteran's hospital on the north side. Holdrege also has a terrific museum. It is my understanding from my cousins, who all still live in the KC area, that Klamm Park is no longer a "safe" place to visit. ~kate ----------------- > Marian Sarantha nee Stewart here in snowy WY, grateful member of John's > terrific mail list. Kate, in the book "The Consolidated Ethnic History of Wyandotte County" by Loren L. Taylor, there is a write up about Christopher KLAMM who married Maria Katherine BRENNER. They were born in Mannheim Germany and had 10 children: Peter, Eva, Henry, Martin, Caroline, Charles, Susan, George and Benjamin. There is information of Christopher's and Maria's movements in the area. Also in the book is info about Peter KLAMM and how Klamm Park came about. Are you aware of the above? A nicely written history of Klamm Park has been updated on the Public Schools of Wyandotte County, Kansas 1844- 2009 website. Attached links show photographs of the Klamm family. I spend hundreds of delightful childhood hours playing at Klamm Park with my cousins and friends. Great memories. Oh, John, thanks for jogging my memory; I own that book and had forgotten about it. Will look up the section on Klamm Park this minute. Also bought copies for each of my two sisters, one now living in Virginia, the other in California. They both treasure the book, and so do I. It's a statistical marvel! Indeed I do remember her -- more specifically, the name, since our class was quite large for its time. Hi, Kate, I can well believe the warning about Klamm Park. Haven't been back to that scene in well over 50 years. And I never go into the area of KCK where I grew up, which was quite respectable in its heyday. Would love to see a picture of Alma Klamm if you can produce one. She was small in stature, usually wore silk or rayon dresses with tiny prints, and always practical black shoes with stacked heels (ultra conservative, as teachers were expected to be in that era.) She wore pince nez glasses and it always amazed me how people could maintain them on their nose. (My father wore them for a time, too.) I can visualize Miss Klamm so clearly. Good to hear from you, and thanks for writing. Marian Sarantha nee Stewart here in snowy WY, grateful member of John's terrific mail list. Thank you, John! Kate: I know Klamm Park well. Used to play tennis there during high school years at Wyandotte (graduated '46). Alma Klamm was my 4th grade teacher, and was she ever a stickler for correctness! (Hallmark of a good teacher, I presume.) She was a spinster but believe she was raising a nephew or grandson at the time who might have been Richard? That name has a familiar ring. My Stewart line came to Kansas before statehood, gr-grandfather Thomas George Stewart an official "pioneer" who established a farm in Princeton Twp, Franklin Co. His grandson, my father Walter L., was b. in Ottawa and moved first to Argentine (worked at Sinclair Refinery) then to KCK where I was born. My mother was a Fry from Argentine. That line originated in VA, moving first to KY then into MO, settling for a while around Weston and St. Joseph before moving to a farm in old Wyandott Twp. Henry W. Fry, my gr-gr grandfather, married Frances A. Young from Andrew Co, MO. Since moving from CA to WY 16-17 years ago I've made a real effort to visit cousins and other family members both in Lenexa, KS and in the Ottawa-Princeton area, always researching in court houses, libraries and varous other repositories. I read every line of every posting coming across this mail list, and thoroughly enjoy hearing everyone's stories. Marian Sarantha - WY P. S.: A friend in our town is a retired dentist who grew up in Holdrege. We drove through there once on a trip to KC and recall a lovely main street in that town. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Kate & David Clabough" <dv121212@charter.net> To: <kswyando@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, January 06, 2009 3:22 PM Subject: Re: [Wyandotte County] Wyandotte County Mailing List > My (childhood) hometown is Holdrege, Nebraska, but I have been living in > Louisville, Tennessee since 1997. > > My Wyandotte County connection is through both my maternal and paternal > lines.
