John and all thanks for the wonderful information. I have been away from home from Dec. 12 to present so did not have accurate KC information on hand to relpy to John's note. My Name is Glenn Dunavan in Great Bend KS. I have two email addresses, _grdunavan@hotmail.com_ (mailto:grdunavan@hotmail.com) and _mrd33@aol.com_ (mailto:mrd33@aol.com) . I am researching the Kelly/Kelley family who lived in KC Kansas in the Early 1900's to Present. Descendent Patrick Lewis Kelly (1956) is my Son in Law. I hope to be able to trace the Kelly/Kelly family back to earlier generations for the sake of my grandchildren. Family Stories told to my Son in law indicated that the reason the family stopped in KC area was because as they traveled from Maine to CA their transportation broke down.. Lewis Stanley Kelley/Kelly was born in Wyandote County KS in 1927. He spent most of his mature years in military before retiring to Bonner Springs Kansas. His two twin children born while he was in Calif. in the marines. Patrick Lewis Kelly and Kathleen Kelly born in 1956 in CALIF. went to Bonner Springs High School and Graduated about 1982. Lewis S Kelley shows up in 1930 Census. Father is listed by Ancestry Index as Richie Kelley (Original looks like Archie and Patrick says he understood his grandfather was named Archibald) Mother is listed as Berniece Kelley. with Children Edwina E., Leannd (should be Leonard) E. and Lewis S. In the household is Therisult R. Kelley who is listed as Mother, but is probably Step mother as she is 35 compared to Richie(Archie) who is 26. Siblings of Archie are Edna and Ada. The Birth of Richie (Archie) is listed as Kansas the birth place of his mother does not relate to the birth place of Therisult Kelley. while the young siblings appear to be her children with Richie(Archie's) father after the death of his first wife. I can find no records of this family prior to the 1930 Census concerning Richie and Bernieces families. Lewis S. Kelly had several wives but only know children are the twins born in Calif to his last Wife Katheen Chesney in Las Vegas Nevada in 1956. Kathleen Chesney Kelly died in Bonner Springs KS in 1996. I think she was Cremated but have no record of by what funeral home. Lewis Kelly is uncooperative with information to even his own children. Kathleen Chesney was born about 1927 in either OK or CA and had previous marriages and possible children. Any information on this family would be appreciated. **************A Good Credit Score is 700 or Above. See yours in just 2 easy steps! Hi John and all the other Wyandotte Cty, KS readers. I grew up in KCK with all kinds of family including grandparents. My great-grandparents lived in KCK but were gone by the time I came along. John has provided me with info about family whether by request or just posting some great articles. I am researching the following names: Bailes; Brumfield; Petersen and Wilson. Of course there are many more but those are the main branches right now. I have even been in contact with relatives that had moved to other parts of the country. It's been fun and frustrating, but you just have to keep digging. Best of luck, Kathy Petersen Beers ________________________________ From: John O'Brien <JohnOBrien@kc.rr.com> To: KansasCity <KansasCity@rootsweb.com>; KS-Wyandotte <KSWyando-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, January 11, 2009 2:51:00 PM Subject: [Wyandotte County] Kansas State Historical Society Here is an interesting site to look through regarding Kansas records. James and Catherine Dunn Tate were the first of our Tate and Dunn families to immigrate. The Clans began to arrive in Kansas City, Kansas around 1845 in small groups where we settled not far from St. Mary?s at 5th and Ann.? We are proud to say that members of our family helped to build St. Mary?s Church.? ? We were Irish Immigrants who tended simple homes and were grateful to work unpretentious jobs.? Our children were born at home, on kitchen tables.? Yet, with enormous pride, our babies were baptized in the splendor of the Church with every family member standing near. ? Great-Great-Grandfather, William A. Tate (1840-1903), owned the "first" 5&10 Cent Store, ?W. Tate 5 & 10?, in Kansas City, Kansas. The store was located downtown, at 1918 North 5th Street.? ?And my late Father, Dr. Wayne Tate, was Vice President of the Kansas Chiropractic Association for several terms in the 1980?s.? Dad had a practice at 37th and Everett for many, many years and was adored by his patients.? ?? ? Eight generations of our family have lived out our lives in Kansas City.? My Sister, Brother and I all went to the same high school that our Parents and Grandparents went to, Wyandotte. Of course, our cousins were there, too!? ? More than 60 members of our Family are buried at St. John Cemetery, the original cemetery of St. Mary?s Church.? Founded in 1864, St. John?s remains the oldest cemetery in KCK, other than the Huron Indian Cemetery.? ? Many of our family remain in the Kansas City area.? Though much of our family have established new lives, and ventured to far away lands, instinctively, we welcome coming home.? Our frequent Tate-Cullen family reunions are crowded and fun with around a hundred of our clan gathering...many from faraway lands.? We have a blast. ?(Sandy Lynn Martin from the Wyandotte County Message Board is one of my dearest cousins and an organizer of our amazing reunions) ? As for me, I was raised in KCK and had a delightful childhood living within walking distance of most of my relatives. As an adult, I moved to KC, MO to be near my work and then to Johnson County, KS where I have lived for the past 35 years.? My two sons, now grown, now live in KC, MO.?? I have been deep in genealogy for the past 40 years since my Grandmother graciously handed me ?The Box?.? I have been hooked ever since.? ?? ? This will be more probably if you include dates and names in your response. For example, saying "my grandfather lived in KC" will not get much of a response but saying "my grandfather, John O'Brien, lived in Argentine in the 1920s" might produce a result. It's up to you how specific you want to be. There is, of course, no requirement that you participate. However, simply responding: "I live in California and lived in Kansas City, KS in the 1950s" would be acceptable. Thank you for your consideration. Hi Richard, thank you for your message. Your last statement ("I am looking for a local researcher for in depth family information.") ........ are you saying you're looking for a paid researcher? If so, the Mid-Continent Library has a list of people. Go to: http://www.mcpl.lib.mo.us/ then click on "Genealogy & Family History" then click on "Genealogy Researches" (under the category Missouri & Kansas Area) and you'll see the Library's statement and link to a list of people. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: JohnWOBrien Surnames: MATTHEWS Classification: biography Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.kansas.counties.wyandotte/1640/mb.ashx Message Board Post: "The Kansas City Times" (Missouri) Friday, November 30, 1894 SHOT IN THE MOUTH. Phillip MATTHEWS, one of the Armour Packing company's butchers, was shot in the mouth by an unknown man at the west end of the Central avenue bridge early yesterday morning. He was intoxicated at the time and was unable to recognize his assailant. According to MATTHEWS' story, the assassin rose up in the darkness, said, "Now I will kill you, ___ ___ you," and fired. MATTHEWS ran back across the bridge and sought medical attention at Police station No. 2. Police Surgeon LUTZ found that the bullet had knocked out four of MATTHEWS' lower teeth and cut off part of the tongue. The ball lodged in the back of the man's neck. MATTHEWS' condition was pronounced serious and he was removed to St. Margaret's hospital. The butcher has a family at 21 South Eleventh street. ====================================================== (I have no connection with this family but I'd appreciate knowing if you found this posting helpful.) johnobrien@kc.rr.com ====================================================== neirbo9 Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Pamela! Thank you. I just had to tell you how much I enjoyed reading your message. Wow .......... in just a few short paragraphs, you covered your family's almost two hundred history in Kansas City, Kansas ............. I feel like I know them!!! (Maybe it's because I'm Irish too!!!!) You live in Johnson County ......! I'm sure our Wyandotte County members will be understanding ......! (Just kidding!) Thank you for YOUR contribution to the Wyandotte County Mailing List (and Message Board). So, tell us about "the box." What did you find? John (living in Clay County ......... :).....) ----- Original Message ----- From: "Pamela Tate" <ptated1@yahoo.com> To: <kswyando@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, January 07, 2009 9:29 PM Subject: Re: [Wyandotte County] Wyandotte County Mailing List When St. Mary’s Church was preparing to build the new Church, the Catholic Church sponsored nearly fifty of our Irish Catholic family for immigration from Portneuf, Quebec, Canada to Kansas City, Kansas. James and Catherine Dunn Tate were the first of our Tate and Dunn families to immigrate. The Clans began to arrive in Kansas City, Kansas around 1845 in small groups where we settled not far from St. Mary’s at 5th and Ann. We are proud to say that members of our family helped to build St. Mary’s Church. We were Irish Immigrants who tended simple homes and were grateful to work unpretentious jobs. Our children were born at home, on kitchen tables. Yet, with enormous pride, our babies were baptized in the splendor of the Church with every family member standing near. Great-Great-Grandfather, William A. Tate (1840-1903), owned the "first" 5&10 Cent Store, “W. Tate 5 & 10”, in Kansas City, Kansas. The store was located downtown, at 1918 North 5th Street. …And my late Father, Dr. Wayne Tate, was Vice President of the Kansas Chiropractic Association for several terms in the 1980’s. Dad had a practice at 37th and Everett for many, many years and was adored by his patients. Eight generations of our family have lived out our lives in Kansas City. My Sister, Brother and I all went to the same high school that our Parents and Grandparents went to, Wyandotte. Of course, our cousins were there, too! More than 60 members of our Family are buried at St. John Cemetery, the original cemetery of St. Mary’s Church. Founded in 1864, St. John’s remains the oldest cemetery in KCK, other than the Huron Indian Cemetery. Many of our family remain in the Kansas City area. Though much of our family have established new lives, and ventured to far away lands, instinctively, we welcome coming home. Our frequent Tate-Cullen family reunions are crowded and fun with around a hundred of our clan gathering...many from faraway lands. We have a blast. (Sandy Lynn Martin from the Wyandotte County Message Board is one of my dearest cousins and an organizer of our amazing reunions) As for me, I was raised in KCK and had a delightful childhood living within walking distance of most of my relatives. As an adult, I moved to KC, MO to be near my work and then to Johnson County, KS where I have lived for the past 35 years. My two sons, now grown, now live in KC, MO. I have been deep in genealogy for the past 40 years since my Grandmother graciously handed me “The Box”. I have been hooked ever since. I want to thank John O’Brien for all the diligent work he so generously shares with all of us. I have been far too remiss in my thanks for all his amazing help…Many, many thanks, John! Pamela Tate

My name is Cindy Weston?& I live in St. Michael, MN (26 miles nw of Mpls) where I am a city councilwoman.? Most of my family lines have been here since before the Revolutionary War.? The Lawhorn line of my family came from Virginia to Kentucky where they left for Illinois in the early 1800's (family rumor says they were friends of & travelled with the Lincoln's and the Grants).?? My gggg?grandmother, Sarah Hickman Lawhorn?was a heroine in the Blackhawk Indian Wars, and after the wars, their children started to move to the Kansas City, KS & MO area. One of the things I was originally looking for was the location of my gg grandmother's grave (Dicy Doranah (Lawhorn) Van Asten).? I have now confirmed that she was buried in Woodlawn Cemetery in 1914 but I haven't been able to locate any records of the actual site.? I had hoped someday to put a marker there.? She is the only family member there as the rest of the family is in Machpelah Cemetery in Liberty, MO and her husband and child/grandchild are in Oklahoma City.? I was there with my great grandmother when I was in my teens (many years ago) but I haven't had much luck in finding the exact plot.? My great grandmother Anna Maria Van Asten (Moore) was married in Kansas City and I would love someday to see if their old homes are still even there - yes I do have the addresses.??My great grandfather, Frank Adelbert Moore was?living in Lawrence, KS just before they were married and I have some family photos that I contributed to the historical society (parades down Massachusset! ts Ave, etc).? Quite a few of the Moore side of the family are buried in the cemetery there. John-thank you for your dedication to this site.? I can only imagine the amount of time you contribute to helping us out here that don't have easy access to some of the answers we seek.? You are truly appreciated!
