    1. [Wyandotte County] George Earl Mack - Kaw Boiler Works
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: K_Clabough Surnames: Mack, Hardy Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.kansas.counties.wyandotte/1649/mb.ashx Message Board Post: My Grandma Alice had six brothers, only one of which made it to adulthood. His name was George Earl Mack. Forever diplomatic, Alice wrote about George in the kindest possible way, but as I read between the lines, I can see the guy was a real jerk. Mean, bordering on cruel, George was constantly picking at people. And he drank - a lot. Now, that's not really all that surprising for a man whose father, Henry, came to the United States from Ireland, but where the alcohol seemed to mellow Henry, it only served to fuel George's internal bitter fires. Like others in his "station in life," George was a laborer. After working for a time delivering milk for Myers Sanitary Milk Company (slogan: "It's safe") in the Armourdale district of Kansas City, KS, he found himself a job at the Kaw Boiler Works Company. Built in 1911 by Fred Palmer and associates, the boiler works was just one of many industries that employed men with strong backs. But any job with a steady paycheck was considered a good one in spite of the labor involved during the Great Depression. George married a woman named Catherine Cecile Hardy and the lived on Barnett Avenue, KCK. (On the 1920 census, their house number is 603 and in 1930 it is 511). At this time, I don't know much about her except her parents were from Ireland. I also know that she and George had four children. The younger two, a set of twins named Edward Aloysius and Catherine Teresa, died within five days of one another from infant cholera in 1928 at the age of two. (Somewhere around here, I have their obits.) The only other thing I know about Catherine is that she died of "heart disease" at the age of 36 in 1931. The family rumor is she drank herself to death grieving over her babies, which I guess in essence would be heart disease. She had two older children, George "Bud" Jr., and Margaret. George Jr. would die as a young man, his death ruled a suicide despite the fact that the gun he supposedly shot himself with was standing in a corner on the other side of the room. George Sr. later remarried a woman named Ann(e). I know even less about her than I do about Catherine. I have a photo of George and his fellow employees of the Kaw Boiler Works Company taken somewhere after 1911. I'm shooting for somewhere around 1920ish, but have no way of justifying that guess except it would have been just after he married Catherine. I don't know the names of any of the other employees, but their silent faces speak volumes of a time and place from long ago. 3. Judy, as you know, Kansas City (Wyandotte County) Kansas and Kansas City (Jackson County) Missouri are side-by-side. Sometimes a person living on the Kansas side died in a hospital or residence on the Missouri side. If so, Missouri death certificate can be found at the following site: http://www.sos.mo.gov/archives/resources/birthdeath/default.asp Also, sometimes Kansas people married in Kansas City, MO. You can find Jackson County marriages at the following site: http://records.co.jackson.mo.us/search.asp?cabinet=marriage Maybe some of your NEWTONs crossed the State line. After a little digging through census records, I figured out these boys at one time were students of the Kansas School for the Blind in KCK in Wyandotte County. This would make sense as Alice's sister Mae worked there for many years. I believe the picture to be taken in the early 30s judging by the approximate age of the kids and their ages on the 1930 census. The kids I located on that census living at the School were all born in either Kansas or Missouri. Their birth years were mostly in the late teens or early 20s. I'll post the names of the students that are listed on the back of the photo. If anyone recognizes a name and wants a copy of the picture, I'll be happy to send you one. (front row) Robert, Redd, Tommy Moss, Dale Walker, Raymond Hards, Paul Cochran, A.G. Williamson (teacher), Jess Layton, Cecil Freeman, Pat Garrahan, Eugene Vogel, Kermit Millen, Eugene Fiedler, Ramon Tejeda, Jack Parli, Leo Thomas, Marion Beal, Harold Vogel and Wayne Primrose. I have other photos of students at that school. I'll take a look at them and see if there are others with names listed. ~kate Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. What a great idea to have everyone post their connection. I have enjoyed reading everyone's messages the past week or so and will now add mine. I live in Richmond, Ray County Missouri about an hour east of Kansas City. I am interested in Wyandotte County through the Engelbrecht and Ryan families. My husband's great grandfather was Martin Engelbrecht who came from Germany in 1881 and settled in south Missiouri. Martin Engelbrecht's sister Lena M Engelbrecht married Clarence Ryan and lived in Wyandotte County KS. (In 1920 her address was 811 North 22nd St KCKS) Clarence was a police officer. They had four children Evelyn Ryan, Lewis V. Ryan (b. abt. 1900) Violet Ryan (b. abt. 1902) and Rosa M Ryan (b. abt 1907) I am trying to find descendants of any of these people. Martin Engelbrecht and Lena (Engelbrecht) Ryan had more brothers: William, Simon, Henry, George and Frank Engelbrecht. At least one of these brothers lived near Clarence & Lena Ryan and worked at a meat packing company. I wonder if it was the Armor Packing Company I read about in another post? He could have been a foreman or in management of some kind. The Martin Engelbrecht family has had family reunions in 2004, 2006 and 2008. I would very much like contact with some of the descendants of his brothers and his sister Lena Ryan. Martin & Lena Engelbrecht's mother Elizabeth Engelbrecht died at Lena Ryan's home in 1921. Thanks to John for posting her obituary that I spotted about a year ago. We would not have that information had you not put it on the board! I do not know where Lena or Clarence Ryan are buried, but I imagine it was in Wyandotte County. Thanks for reading! 3. Annette, I found Clarence's WWI draft registration form and it has their home listed at 311 N. 22nd St. My great great grandfather was a Ryan - Isaac Burton "Bart" Ryan. He was born in 1845 in Rhea Co., TN and died in 1919 in KCK. He married Julia Ann Kirkman and they had Elizabeth (who died at age 19), Molly (who died at age 4), my great grandmother Ida Mae (who married Henry Mack from Ireland. She lived until 1943), and Mandani (sp? who died shortly after birth.) Ida Mae and Henry both died in KC, Wyandotte County, KS. Isaac's father's name was Abner Ryan. He was married to Rebecca Brown. Abner was shot and killed by bushwackers on his porch in Kingsville, MO 7 May 1865. I don't see a Clarence in my files, but I'll keep looking. ~kate ------------------ > Hello John; Thank you again for all of your posts and the work you do. > What a great idea to have everyone post their connection. 1. [Wyandotte County] Wyandotte county connection - Engelbrecth & Ryan families
    2. Annette Proffitt
    3. Hello John; Thank you again for all of your posts and the work you do. 3. Dear Annette, I located this information on the Engelbrecth reunions...They were posted by our own John O'Brien. http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/KSWYANDO/2008-04/1209133655 http://boards.ancestry.com/thread.aspx?mv=flat&m=1549&p=localities.northam.usa.states.kansas.counties.wyandotte Thanks for sharing your story!  Very interesting... Kansas City had several large meat packing companies. Meat packing was a HUGE industry in that part of KC history. pamela tate   --- On Mon, 1/12/09, Annette Proffitt <annettep@epsi.net> wrote: From: Annette Proffitt <annettep@epsi.net> Subject: [Wyandotte County] Wyandotte county connection - Engelbrecth & Ryan families To: kswyando@rootsweb.com Date: Monday, January 12, 2009, 11:07 AM Hello John; Thank you again for all of your posts and the work you do.
