The town of Piper proper was located at about 123rd and Leavenworth Road. Originally it was a fairly prosperous little town. It hosted a Post Office, store, railroad depot, Piper Baptist Church (still standing), A.O.U.W. Hall, etc. The High School was built ca. 1920. My husband's grandparent's graduated there in 1924 & 26. I have many of the original yearbooks. Many changes affected Piper. The first being the Parallel Road which basically bypassed Piper along with the demise of the railroad. A fire destroyed much of the town. The depression got the rest of it. Many began banking in Basehor, Kansas. Those of us who have been here a while can still see remnants of the burms from the rail roadtracks. Piper's neighboring towns were Maywood to the South; White Church to the Southeast; Wolcott to the North; Basehor/Victory Junction to the west, Wallulla to the north. Some people like to describe the town of Piper as: West of Kansas City Kansas-North of Edwardsville-Northeast of Bonner Springs-East of Basehor-South of Leavenworth. In the 1980's when my husband and I built our home, our address was Piper, Kansas, our phone was Bonner Springs; our lights came from Leavenworth; and the gas from Bonner. In the later part of the 1980's we were annexed by Kansas City, Kansas. All that remains of Piper is the original High School located at 123rd and Leavenworth Road; Piper Baptist Church (renamed now but still standing) the Wash Brown residence; Maywood Community Church & cemetery; a few other small cemeteries. There is still a Piper School District which as of yet has not been combined with Kansas City Kansas. -----Original Message----- From: kswyando-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:kswyando-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of John O'Brien Sent: Monday, January 26, 2009 10:32 AM To: kswyando@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [Wyandotte County] Piper, KS Diane, I've seen Piper mentioned in old news articles. I know I'm not Diane, but I might be able to get you a rough idea. It's west of KCK, around 112th St. and Parallel. It probably goes out around Hwy 7 (west of I-435). It's really close to the new race track and "shopping mecca" (i.e. Cabela's). We were concerned for awhile that we would lose the Brown Homestead to the highway additions that were going to be made for the development. It is an old community, and I believe has been annexed by KCK. Hope that helps! Oh yes! I'd love any info you can get. We have Gale Newton Jr. and he has joined the DNA group for Newtons, so soon we may have more information. Thanks. Here is the info I have ---- if you know anything about any of these folks I would love to hear : Family : Frankel GG: Harris and Dora I know that Dora died in Kansas City in 1906. It lists the address at the time of death as 401 Kansas Ave. Her maiden name was Levy (or Levi) Now here is the additional info : In the 1905 directory it lists Abraham Levy at a dry goods store at 401 Kansas Ave. I know that my family had some type of dry goods store. I do not know who Abraham Levy was? The 1909 city directory has Jonas Levy as a clerk and a Benjamin Levy, dry goods store at 317 Kansas Avenue. The 1916 city directory has Abraham Levy, men furnishings and real estate, 401 Kansas Avenue. Additionally, my grandmother (Dora's daughter) wrote a letter in 1962 to a family member (the one that provided this info). He was planning on travelling to the area and she told him about some cousins that they used to have in the area and to look them up --- here are those names (this family member never made it to the area to try to make contact): Dorothy Schoenfeld, Beckie Ligerman, Vern & Herman Hershman, Helen Kemp. I am not sure if the names will lead to any more information about this family - but I thought I would try. Thanks to everyone for reading. Good luck to all in your own family searching. I just wanted to say thanks to all of you that keep my old memory cells chugging along. It is therapeutic and keeps my laughing and crying muscles working. I always try to thank those that are kind to me and just feel sorry for those that don't know how to be kind. Need to go get my day started. I have a date tonight. My daughter is busy and my son in-law is picking me up to take my car to where he can drive it to a speed to "blow the carbon out" and then to dinner. It now has 644 miles on it and I cannot understand how there could be much carbon but who is going to turn down a nice dinner with a handsome whiteheaded gentlemen who is like a son to me. I owe him a lot of thanks as for 2 1/2 years he took and stayed with me for every chemo treatment, every painful and non painful tests. Just proves not all of the good die young. One that so many of us enjoyed, and for so many many years, was The Italian Gardens. I can close my eyes and see and almost taste their food right now. Does anyone remember the name of the drug store on the northeast corner of 12th & Grand...it was something like Bernies. That was a meeting place for a lot of us. All these places that we could "meet and eat" and it didn't cost us very much. I remember getting off work one summer day when I was working in the Argyle Building for Dr. Petry (sp) and Dr. Schauffler I went shopping and stopped by Bernies for a coke refresher and then discovered I didn't have the dime for the bus ride home. I walked home from there to 3004 Linwood Boulevard...and in heels. My feet could hardly hit the floor the next day...thank God it was Saturday. **************A Good Credit Score is 700 or Above. Since many of us have been on the Mailing List for a long time, some may not remember that there are two ways you can receive posted messages: 1. each message as it is posted 2. all messages in one mailing once each day ("digest") If you are currently getting each message as it's sent but would prefer to get one email with all the messages, let me know and I'll set you up for "digest." The "digest" is ideal for anyone who wants to reduce the number of messages received or for someone who reviews mail once a day and has no need to see messages at the time they are posted. The downside of the "digest" is you will not be able to respond to a message at the time that it is posted. This may be important to people who want to have "dialog" about a posting. If you want to change over to "digest" send me a note and I'll handle it for you. If you're on "digest" now and want to receive messages as they are posted, let me know and I'll take you off "digest." One last thought: if you are on "digest" and respond to an item, please delete the other messages. Do not include them with your response because the file will be too large and may post to the List. If you have any questions you can contact me direct. John JohnOBrien@kc.rr.com
