Quindaro is the one to the west and Mt Hope is the larger one to the east. It looks like one big cemetery, there is no fence separating the two. The way to tell the line of division is, when you approach from Parallel Parkway, Quindaro has a rock retaining wall that runs it's length where as Mt Hope is just the sidewalk then the cemetery.

    3. A query about the cemetery book: When I was searching Mt Hope, several years ago, I was unaware that Quindaro was in the same area, just that it was the "older " part of that cemetery. My search for a grave would not have been successful without the expert help of a man from the Parks Dept. with cemetery records. I found the cemetery map totally confusing. I am not sure that I have anyone else buried in Mt. Hope (or Quindaro) but the grave I found was a Broomfield, Richard, buried 1935 in an unmarked grave. I have been looking for his Father, Issac Broomfield, (d 1883) who family history said, was buried in Woodlawn Cemetery in Independence, MO. however, they did not find him in their records. A query to the Woodlawn Cemetery of Kansas City was also unsuccessful. Since he lived and died in KCK, maybe history is wrong and he is somewhere locally. I have an wonderful old photo of his grave at the time of burial, with a temporary marker with his name, but there is no way to te! ll where the cemetery is. 3. I do not find an Isaac Broomfield in the Mt. Hope listings. However, there is another very old cemetery in Kansas City, Kansas by the name of Oak Grove Cemetery. It is very very close to the border of Kansas City, Kansas and Kansas City, Missouri. The Parks Department is also in charge of that cemetery. The Wyandotte County Museum has the most helpful volunteers I have ever found. They have the old ledger books for the cemeteries under the Parks Department's care. Their telephone number is 913-721-1078, fax is 913-721-1394 and the Archivist is a Joel Thornton. His email address is jthornton@wycokck.org. Perhaps they could check to see if your Mr. Broomfield is buried in Oak Grove. 2. Melissa Blackman
    3. If you don't get any replies to this email, I thought I might forward you something concerning this. I've lived in Kansas City, Kansas my entire life. I never knew that meat could come from any place other than Regan's Meat Market. My Daddy stopped there every Friday night and I'll still never forget the white paper that everything was wrapped in. We were raised on the Polish sausage that came from Regan's and inside the store, faithfully, were "Charlie and Elizabeth". When Regan's went out of business, some of the best history in Kansas City, Kansas went with it. I am related, through marriage, to someone else that took over another local meat market in the area. Sadly, the neighborhood couldn't contribute enough to the business and their attempt to salvage the store was unsuccessful. However, knowing that they had managed to almost duplicate and perfect the Polish sausage recipe "of Charlie and Elizabeth's", I wrote to this person and sent your email, asking if they might have been in on any "trade secrets". Sadly, this is the reply I received when I asked "Charlie and Elizabeth are both gone now, aren't they?": Unfortunately, yes - and he never wrote stuff like this down. The old time meat guys were really picky about recipes, so they tended to keep them in their heads, and would take those "secrets" to their graves. Just for reference, my Polish sausage recipe came pretty close to theirs, and I still haven't written the recipe down - out of respect for them as much as anything else. I do hope that someone knows something and can get the information you are seeking. But if not, the above reply might explain why. Good luck. P H <docnpat@hotmail.com> wrote: First, let me apologize to those of you who will feel that this entry is not directly related to genealogy. But this is my best chance of reaching anyone from Regan's (Reagan's?) Meat Shop/Deli on Central Street in Kansas City, Kansas. If this offends you, please delete it. I truly hope to find what I am looking for. Here is the family history part of the story: My grandfather made the most delicious chili. Once each year, about the end of autumn or the beginning of winter, Grandfather went to the City Market and purchased both chili powder and chili pods -- one for flavor and one for heat. Then he went to Reagan's and had a large amount of beef ground -- TWICE. He also had beef tallow ground to add to the mixture. Once home he added ground onions and stewed the chili for hours and hours. There were no tomatoes or tomato products in this chili. We would freeze it in pint or quart freezer boxes. After Grandfather's health no longer allowed him to make his own chili, we found a delicious chili --the closest to Grandfather's recipe that I've ever found -- that we could purchase frozen at Regan's. Now Regan's is closed, Grandfather has been gone for 14 years, and I have not yet been able to duplicate Grandfather's chili. Is there ANYONE on here who has access to Regan's chili recipe, or one that sounds remotely like Grandfather's? Thank you for listening. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Burke and Coughlin Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/HAB.2ACI/832 Message Board Post: My great-grandparents were Thomas Burke and Ann McGrath, both born in Ireland, who married in St Louis, MO. Their oldest daughter Annie was born in St Louis, but they moved to Connor City/Wolcott by the time later children were born. Mary (or Marie) was my grandmother, born in Wolcott between 1872 and 1882 (she fudged her age by various years, in censuses, etc.). A brother, Joseph, was also born in Kansas in the 1870s. There were other siblings, but I don't know their names, except there was supposed to be another sister, Agnes, who became a nun and was sent to Chicago. Vague family legend says the father, Thomas, was "killed on the bridge" for being on the wrong side (or both sides) of the Irish rebellion or some other conflict. We don't know if this was a bridge between Kansas and Missouri, or what. But sometime after that, the family moved back to St Louis. The daughter, Annie, married Patrick Coughlin and lived with him in Quindaro. My grandmother, Mary/Marie, married an! d moved to Oklahoma. Joseph married Louisa Schnipper. The only definite census "sighting" I have, of my Burkes in St Louis, is 1910; Joseph, wife "Louise", and his mother, "Anna M." Burke, living at a street address I know was theirs. I also know that a few months after that census, Joseph and Louisa had a daughter, Agnes Louise Burke. I know Louisa died in 1915, but not what happened to little Agnes Louise. Maybe family legend was confused, and maybe she's the one who became a nun; or maybe she died early, too. When my Mom and Dad visited Joseph shortly before I was born, there was no mention of Joseph having any children. Joseph never remarried, and neither did Annie, when her husband died. Those two siblings lived the rest of their lives at that same 1910-census address, over a little store. I don't know when Thomas was killed, but it had to be before 1910. I don't know when his widow, Ann(a) died, but it had to be after 1910 (in St Louis). I don't know where, exactly, ! they came from in Ireland. I'm hoping if I can find out more about the ir time in Connor City/Wolcott, I can find those answers. They were Catholic; what Catholic churches were there in the 1870s and 1880s? I wonder if any of their family (including Thomas) were buried in the Wolcott cemetery? Hope someone out there can give some info or advice. Bonnie
