    3. THANKS AGAIN PAT That is a WOW! Wonder if Glenn WITHERSPOON knew when he became chaplain at the prison of Leavenworth in 1934, that is where his biological grandfather William DUDREY died when it was the OLD SOLDIERS HOME IN 1890? Dudrey was a Civil War Vet. I have his records from the Leavenworth home, and info on his burial place there. HE served in Co M, 5th Rgt, Ill Cav Vol. with his brother in law, Marilla's brother Levi BRANCH. Now I wonder if anyone on this list might do a lookup for an obit for: Lu Witherspoon Born ca 1876 Kansas died between 27 to 30 Dec 1963 in downtown KS City, Wyandotte Co KS buried Highland park Cem, Kansas City Hugs, Carolyn Remember, you have a friend in Oklahoma -- forever sorting out dead relatives! 1. Question for Patricia--historic Star/Times newspaper database
    2. Hi Patricia You mentioned in your email that there is a searchable database dating back to the 1890's. Do you need a Kansas library card to access this? If not, could you send the web-site address? I have one family (SEIP) who moved to Kansas City by 1885. At least two members died between 1900-1910 and I'd like to be able to find their obituaries. Thank you for your help. Kathy Karn

    1. Re: Finding graves and death dates for Wyandotte Co, KS
    2. Here is a very helpful website that I use all of the time. It is Find A Grave at _http://www.findagrave.com/_ (http://www.findagrave.com/) It is a website where people like you and me can post information about a burial in a particular cemetery. There are also photos of the cemetery and sometimes photos of the tombstone. I have found several of my extended and family members burial info here, including tombstone photos. There are several of the Wyandotte Co, KS cemeteries on this website. Check it out and you might be surprised who you find! You will need to log in to access info and to submit but it is a FREE site! 3. You are SO RIGHT Pat Williams -- This was my lucky day -- finding you and learning you had found my gr gr aunt's missing child and grandchildren! Thank you so much. You asked where they lived before moving to Wyandotte co. The DUDREY family was living in Rice Co Kansas 1880 when Marilla BRANCH DUDREY (the mother) died at age 36. The three children seem to have been placed with families around there and they apparently grew up in Lyons Co and around Great Bend and Newton, Kansas. I had located the other two children's info, and now with Lou's info I feel the lost is found. -- thanks to you. Hugs, Carolyn Remember, you have a friend in Oklahoma -- endlessly sorting out dead relatives! 3. P.S. Many people get confused about which county Kansas City is in. You are on the mailing list for the Kansas City, KS, county(Wyandotte). Laura Dey Mason lived in Kansas City, Jackson, Missouri.(In fact, she is east of the city and close to Independence, Jackson, MO. Kansas City, KS, is west.) You will have the best luck with this family on the Jackson County, MO, list and searching in MO. 1. Re: [KSWYANDO] Help Please - Patterson
    2. Pat Williams
    3. 1. Cemeteries. There is a cemetery book for Wyandotte county that I have used, however, it is "thin". Only the smaller cemeteries seem to have actual listings of those buried. You are left to call or write the larger institutions to ask if Corvin/Corbin was buried there. Here is a terrific reference page: http://www.rootsweb.com/~kscemete/wyandotte/wyandotte.htm You can write or call the KCKS Central Library. I am told they will do limited look-ups. The Kansas City, Kansas Public Library 625 Minnesota Avenue Kansas City, KS 66101 (913) 551-3280 I have never seen a cemetery book for Kansas City, MO, although I understand that some of the smaller cemeteries have had volunteers walk and log info from tombstones. The best info for that city should be on the Jackson county, MO, list. The Kansas City, MO, Public library will also do limited look-ups. They have something called a Wyandotte room for Wyandotte county resources. www.kclibrary.org You didn't say where in Wyandotte County Corvin/Corbin and his wife lived. That makes a tremendous difference in which funeral parlor they would have used or which cemetery they would have chosen. My people lived in the farmlands and that meant that there were very specific places that they relied on. If you can identify a funeral home near their residence, it can be a terrific source of info in terms of telling you where people in a certain neighborhood or little town were likely to be buried. The funeral parlors often have lots of info on a person that they buried. 2. Marriages. The only place that I have ever looked for a Wyandotte county marriage record is at the courthouse in downtown Kansas City, KS. I have been told those records have been duplicated and sent to the KS Historical Soc in Topeka. I am not sure if the research room at the Wyandotte County museum has them. I don't believe they do, although they have all the original will books. Someone else on this list may know. That said, I don't believe the Wyandotte county recorded marriages go back as far as the 1870s. Nor do I believe that the Kansas City, MO, marriage records go back that far. I think they both may go back into the 1890s. Perhaps 1880s. Older records might be held by a few churches. All Jackson county(Kansas City, MO) marriage records are online. I searched for Corbin and Corvin Patterson and found nothing. http://records.co.jackson.mo.us/search.asp?cabinet=marriage&err=No%20Matches%20Found%2e&l=755&t=0 Again, I don't think the records go back that far. I did a digital search for obits in old Kansas City, MO, papers and got nothing. That doesn't mean an obit doesn't exist in them, but that not all names and terms seem to be digitized. There are African American newspapers for both KCMO and KCKS. The librarians should be able to help you with those. However, if a digital search doesn't work, you are better off to try to find a death date first from the cemeteries or funeral homes, because searching obits in several different papers for ten years or more will take you forever. Good luck. Hope other people will give you even more info. 3. The Wyandotte County Museum has a book that was composed by the Wyandotte County Genealogical Society of markers within the cemetery. Woodlawn was taken over by the Parks and Recreations Department some years ago and dozens of stones have been vandalized. My own great-grandmother's marker was stolen years ago. Every time I'm in there, I see more and more damaged stones. The Museum has some burial records that were turned over to them, but just a week ago, the Archivist told me it was rather hit and miss on what was available. Their number is 913/721-1078. It's staffed by volunteers who are very helpful, but the last time I was in there, one gentleman told me they had dozens of emails and only so much time to be able to help everyone. She is a cook in a family. Emma married a Hugh "Louis/Lewis" Harris. I have never been able to find Hugh "Louis/Lewis" Harris in the 1870 census. However, I believe they married between 1870 and 1880, probably in Wyandotte Co., KS. They moved to Lyon Co., KS, where they lived most of their lives. No marriage record for them in Lyon Co., KS. Can anyone point me in the right direction to find a marriage record? This family is African American. Thanks! Diane Payne in Seattle, WA

Surnames: Patterson Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/HAB.2ACI/849 Message Board Post: Hi, This is my first posting on the Wyandotte Co. Message Board. Would appreciate any help. Corvin or Corbin Patterson was born Oct 1849 in MO. He is listed in the 1870, 1880,1900 and 1910 Wyandotte Co. Ks Census. His wife Henrietta is listed in the 1920 and 1930 census. I believe Corvin/Corbin died between 1910 and 1920. Is there a Cemetery book for Wyandotte Co.? Or for Kansas City? Does anyone has access to obits and can check for Corvin/Corbin and his wife Henrietta Patterson? Where do I look for a marriage record? I believe they married in either MO or Wyandotte Co. KS? If in Wyandotte this marriage would be between 1870 and 1874. This family is African American. Thanks for any help. Diane Payne in Seattle, WA
