Thanks for the good thoughts, Vanette. It looks as if there is a happy ending. Helen found a second husband and then the death certificate for Irene Bernice at the fine MO site. She is sending off for same. The interesting twist to everything is that while I was trying to find info, I stumbled upon the fact that Irene Bernice's gggrandfather is the same man as my child's ggggrandfather(through my former husband). It's a small world. Call me nosy but I have been following the "saga" of Irene Berniece Warren and am rejoicing both with the person who made the request and those who have found information. It's so good to be able to share in someone else's successes! Vanette
Hi Helen, I am going to send you a boodle of materials off list because I am now sure that I've found the correct woman in Kansas City, Jackson, MO. I am really just continuing to post to the list so that others can stay informed and no one goes out and wastes effort by duplicating the research already performed. I pinned together the parents and grandparents of the Irene Bernice Warren Bates that I sent you info on in previous postings. Those ancestors fit into a family file I found on the net that does not have Bernice's birth or death date but does note that she killed herself by drinking mercury. There is no doubt that the Bernice Warren born to Frank and Minnie L. Warren is the same person noted as drinking mercury. It does not have her marriage or any other info. I would think that it would be a nearly ridiculous coincidence for a woman with the same name, in the same time period, and in the same general area, to have killed herself. So I feel confident that I have found your Irene Bernice. I do understand that this is not a slam dunk or finished project until you find her place and date of death. I also understand that, after searching for death files using the name Bates, if you are unsuccessful, you will have to look for a divorce or second marriage, probably listed under the name, Bates, and may have to come back to the list to request a look-up. But at least you now have the next step to work with. Good luck. And if you have anti-spamming software, you will need to add my personal e-mail to your address list, so that your software deosn't reject my mails as spam. Patricia

This same Irene Bernice Warren was married in Kansas City, Jackson, MO on June 1, 1922. Even though she uses the name Irene, and gives the age of 18(she would actually be only 15-1/2), I am pretty sure that it's the same girl because her mother, Minnie, signed permission for her to marry. I have found plenty of people in my family who lied about their ages in order to be old enough to marry. She married John W. Bates b. about 1897(he gives the age of 25) from 1311 Liberty, Kansas City, Jackson, Missouri. The only death record in all of Missouri for an Irene Bates betweem 1910 - 1955 is this for Butler County: Irene Bates February _, 1934 Butler 4116 The only Bernice Bates death record in all of Missouri between 1910 - 1955 is this for Randolph county: Bernice Bates January 05, 1927 Randolph 2213-a If you think that I have found the correct Irene Bernice Warren, I will be happy to send you the original census records, if you do not have access to a census. And I will send you the marriage certificate. I will have to send off-list and as attachments. If you think either of the Missouri deaths might be hers, I will be happy to show you where to go to send off for the records. Its a very nominal fee of $1 each to get copies and see if they are your person. Hi Helen, Is it possible that the following is your Bernice? This is from the 1910 census for Kansas City, Jackson, Missouri. Name: Bernice Warren Age in 1910: 3 Estimated birth year: abt 1907 Birthplace: Missouri Relation to Head of House: Daughter Father's Name: Frank C Father's Birth Place: Kansas Mother's Name: Minnie Mother's Birth Place: North Carolina Home in 1910: Kansas Ward 14, Jackson, Missouri Marital Status: Single Race: White Gender: Female Perhaps you have already seen the above and rejected it, but I looked for her and ask, in part, because it would be a very good thing to place her via city directories or census. I don't get the sense that there are many people on this list with access to the Wyandotte County marriage records which is why you've probably not gotten offers for a look-up. The other reason is that a 20 year span of looking in the books that I have traveled to search in the courthouse, is a pretty tall order. Even though they are indexed. It would be really helpful to narrow down the years with......something. Is there any other info at all that might help you do that? Have you ever placed her anywhere in Kansas, at any time? There are city directories available for Kansas City, KS, that either the Museum or the library should be able to access. Hi, In the 1900 Wyandotte Co. Census, Delaware Township, there is a listing of several people they are referred to as "inmates." I believe this is a Poor House. In 1900 Major Scott is living in the Poor House. In the 1910 census I find Major Scott living in Delaware Township in the "County Almshouse" Does anyone know more about the Poor House in Delaware Township? Thanks, Diane Payne

Hi List, I would like to find descendants of the Patterson and/or Gayden families. Both families are African American. Corvine Patterson died in 1913 in Kansas City, Ks. His wife Henrietta Scott-Patterson died in 1952 in Kansas City. They had a daughter Ida Mae who married on Oct 10, 1899 to Ernest Gayden. I believe Ernest and Ida had the following children: Ernest L. Gayden who died Dec 29, 1991 in Kansas Corwine or Patterson Gayden Henrietta A. Gayden Ida M. Gayden Ruth Gayden Etheline Gayden Is anyone related to this family? Do you know someone who is? Any help is appreciated. Diane Payne in Seattle, WA
Hi, Is there anyone available on the list to go to City Hall and search early marriage records? I have two records I am looking for. I tried the Historical Museum - Trowbridge Research Library, they could not find the marriage records. I would really appreciate the help. Diane Payne in Seattle, WA "The address for City Hall is 701 N. 7th St., Kansas City, KS 66101. The courthouse had marriage books years ago that you could go there and search through yourself, but staff was not available to perform any searches for anyone."
Here is more info: http://www.kshs.org/research/collections/documents/bibliographies/poorfarms.htm If the KS State Historical Society has it noted on their site, they may have records. And this is a good little discussion from a rootsweb message board. http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/KansasCity/2002-03/1017102946 I seem to remember reading that this poor farm, although it could have been the one in Johnson county, was in existence pretty far into the 20th c. Hi Diane, I have read about it before but don't remember if the following was the reference: "After leaving Constitution Hall, the county officers moved into Byron Judd's building on Minnesota avenue. They changed around several times. At present (September, 1882) a fine two-story brick Court House, to cost $35,000, is being erected on the northwest corner of Minnesota avenue and Seventh street. The site was purchased from H. M. Northrup for $6,000. The county poor farm is situated about twelve miles west of Wyandotte City." This is from the Cutler book on KS, Quindaro section: http://www.kancoll.org/books/cutler/wyandotte/wyandotte-co-p4.html There is another reference here: http://skyways.lib.ks.us/genweb/archives/wyandott/history/1911/volume2/f/fleminp.html This is a terrific site on poor farms: http://www.poorhousestory.com/ You will find general information but I don't believe that they have anything specific to Wyandotte. My gggrandfather died in a poorhouse in another KS county. I got info on it from the public library. The court house kept records of poorhouse inmates and had a record of his death. There was also a living relative of the "keeper of the poorhouse" with whom I communicated. She was the repository of any other records. I don't know where the repository is for Wyandotte, but if no one else has more specific info, you might start your search where I did. Poor house inmates were supposed to be included in the census. I made one request via mail, enclosed a stamped, self-addressed envelope, and received what I asked without charge. The people at Highland Park Cemetery are very nice and probably have all obits that were in any area newspapers. They also sent me copies of the funeral records. The ones I have gotten from them were over 50 years old so I don't know if they are able to do that with more recent deaths. Good Luck with your search. Highland Park does have some obits for persons buried in their cemetery but not for everyone. There are dozens of cemeteries in KCKS and many are very large. The address for City Hall is 701 N. 7th St., Kansas City, KS 66101. The courthouse had marriage books years ago that you could go there and search through yourself, but staff was not available to perform any searches for anyone. I don't know if that's changed or not. City Hall never had any type of records like that years ago, when there was a definite division in county and city, but since the Unified Government of KCKS was formed, it's hard to tell where to find records any more. The Wyandotte County Museum might be a better option and I know lots of people have found good information from there, myself included.
