I am most interested in information on Evalyn and her parents, seeing as I know nothing about them. Charles and Evalyn were both born in Kansas as well as all their parents. I would greatly appreciate obituary lookups and any other info. Thanks
The only help that I can offer, Lucy, is to tell you that there weren't recorded death certificates during that time and your only shot at finding David is probably some sort of cemetery record. I suggest that you contact the Wyandotte County Museum for info on the most likely cemeteries that he would have been buried in and how to go about getting a look-up. http://www.wycokck.org/gen/wyco_generated_pages/Trowbridge_Research_Library_m1019.html Patricia On 19 Aug 2006 03:53:53 -0600, ljbaker2@earthlink.net < ljbaker2@earthlink.net> wrote: > > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > > Surnames: HARMON, RENAHLT, BUZICK > Classification: Query > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/HAB.2ACI/862 > > Message Board Post: > > I'm hopeful that someone can help me with a mystery that I've been > attempting to solve for many years. Patricia, Is there a way I can access the obits in LA County? I would like to find one for my great-great-aunt Mary Emma Outcalt who died there on Oct. 21, 1956 and see whether her sister and brother-in-law Joseph N. and Anna F. Fisher died there as well. I only have a date range on Joseph (1910-1920) and Anna (aft 1933, probably before 1940 as she is not on the CA death index). Vanette
Hi Vanette, I am accessing the LA Times obits through a brand new service called Proquest Obituaries. It is basically just the historic LA Time, historic Chicago Trib, historic NYTimes and 1 other paper. It is available through the Mid-Continent Library system in MO. The Red Bridge, Riverside, or Parkville branches might be close enough to be accessible to you, if you are in KS. The family genealogy center in Independence is supposed to be one of the best centers around. They also offer News Archive Elite, all of the historic papers listed above separately, and America's Obituaries from selected papers around the country, which is only contemporary. I have not had good luck with finding my people in the LA area in the LA Times. I haven't yet discovered what other papers might have obits for the 1930s - 60s. I could not find Mary Emma. These are the Outcalts who have obits. They are pretty puny, more like funeral notices: Lillian M., mother of Beatrice 11/2/06 Wm, husband of Majorie, father of Miller 10/13/56 Margery N. 02/4/64 Wilma Outcalt-Van Horn, wife of George B. Let me know if you have no access to Mid-Continent. I will give a try to Anna and Joseph, however, because you have to open each obit, with no concise listing, I make no promises in looking hard. It could be a boodle of folks. Pat On 8/8/06, VanetteHobbs@aol.com <VanetteHobbs@aol.com> wrote: > > Patricia, > > Is there a way I can access the obits in LA County? There is a Bethany, MO in Harrison County. Early MO births are online, but I have never seen any back that far and did not find your Myrtle listed. It sounds as if you already have the following from the California Death Index. HOLLINGSWORTH MYRTLE 08/16/1878 DURBIN F KANSAS _LOS ANGELES(19)_ (http://resources.rootsweb.com/USA/CA/LosAngeles) 05/01/1943 _565-18-1259_ (http://ssdi.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/ssdi.cgi?ssn=565-18-1259) 64 yrs Now I am going to muddy the waters. The USGS Geographic Names Information System shows Bethany, KS as a variant name for Portis, in Osborne County. Here is their citation for that: Baughman, Robert W. Kansas Post Offices, 1828-1961, Wichita: McCormick-Armstrong Company, 1961. Lists post offices with dates and counties, cross referenced with former names. So at the time you are looking for, there may have been a Bethany KS also. Looks like I have given you information, but not any real help. Perhaps something will be a lead, anyway. Vanette
This is what I found online in the historic LA Times: LA Times, May 2, 1943. "Mrs. Myrtle Hollingsworth. W.A. Brown and Sons, directors." LA Times, May 4, 1943. "Of 231 East Twenty-seventh Street. Mrs. Myrtle Hollingsworth, beloved wife of Joe Hollingsworth. Funeral services at 3 p.m. from the chapel of W.A. Brown and Son, 1815 S. Flower St." LA Times, May 5, 1943. "The funeral services of Mrs. Myrtle Hollinsworth will be held today at 3 p.m. from the chapel of W.A. Brown and Son, 1815 Flower St." I am not abbreviating - these notices are exactly as printed - and realize that this information seems very slim, but it was not unusual for major papers during that time period. You would need to talk to a librarian at a family center to see if there might be another obit in any other publication. You can also try the Los Angeles county listserve to see if there is anyone who will help you. And you should try the www.usgenweb.com site for Los Angeles county, CA. Some funeral parlors are still operating and can have quite detailed information about the deceased. You might try that route. Bethany, KS, is in Osborne county and Bethany, MO, is in Harrison County(unless there are more towns than one in each state with that name). I looked in the 1880 census and could not find her or Durbins in either county. You can go to the Osborne and Harrison listserves and ask for a lookup, however, the chances of there being a birth record for 1878 is very slim. If you can't find the parents or ANYONE who is related to her in the 1880 census, I suggest that you begin tracing Myrtle back in the census and see where she is in 1900. There is also a state census for Kansas for 1895. The index can be accessed from the KS Historical Society site but you will have to either go there or request the film through your family center. There is a pretty wide gap between Bethany, KS, and Bethany, MO. Chances are good that if you look at the overall pattern of migration for the family and/or extended family, it will help you decide which state/town she was born in. For instance, where were her siblings born? Parents? etc. Good Luck, Patricia On 8 Aug 2006 14:34:17 -0600, glwhite0@adelphia.net <glwhite0@adelphia.net> wrote: > > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > > Classification: Query > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/HAB.2ACI/860 > > Message Board Post: > > I'm trying to find a record on my grandmother who was Myrtle R. Thanks to this list I found my GGreatgrandmothers marriage certificate, now what I need is her divorce papers from Joseph H. Hello! My grandfather's brother, Carl Wilhelm Green (Gran?), born in Sweden, 14 December, 1865, arrived in Kansas around 1883. He has been listed on most of the available census tables, his wife was Mathilda (Smith) Green, and they had five children. He was a soap maker. What I'd mostly like to know now is when he died, and where he is buried. If I can find a location to write for a death certificate, that would be wonderful. Any help that anyone can give me would be greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Anne Green Stark ; anne@pacifier.com
Hello, For the person who is researching for Corbin Patterson. You might try the Kansas State Historical Society web site, www. kshs.org. The site has lots of great info on their holding of various info for the state of Kansas. Some people don't know that Kansas toke a state census report from 1855-1925, the reports have helped me to find lots of info on my family rather then having to wait the 10 years for the Fed census. Surnames: Casey, Cacy Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/HAB.2ACI/857 Message Board Post: Recently while working on my father's side of the family, a scribbled note in my mother's papers caught my attention. Actually it concerned her family, her brother (my uncle) who died in 1966. His info: Name: SAM CHESTINE CASEY (may be spelled CACY) Birth: 16 Jan 1919 in Matoaka, Mercer, WV Death: 04 Feb 1966 in Kansas City, KS Growing up in CA, I never met this Uncle nor heard much about him. At almost 60, I now find that this uncle had quite a checkered past; According to other information I have since learned from his still living brother, he was sent to Leavenworth Prison for desertion around the end of WWII. Once out, he settled in Witchita, KS and married. Things went from bad to worse (according to kin) and in the early 1950's, he took up with the wrong people and ended up robbing a bank and sent to Leavenworth again :-( To be near him, his wife (Audrey) moves to Kansas City, KS . His brother is unsure of how long the sentence was, but he ends up dying under 'suspicious circumtances' in Kansas City, KS on 04 Feb 1966. At the time, my grandmother had his body flown back to West Virginia where he was buried. The funeral director (a friend of the family) said that in preparing the body for burial he found that my uncle's neck had been cut. :-/. The death certificate (which I never saw) was where it evidently mentioned death 'under mysterious circumstances'. They thought at the time that it was a bit odd that the police dept. didn't provide any more information, but no one looked into it any further. At this time, only my other uncle (Sam's brother), is still living and he has a hard time remembering anything. The only information other than family info, that I've been able to obtain comes from the funeral home. They've been able to give me the only information they still had...giving me his exact birth and death dates as well as affirming the fact that he died in Kansas. I'm hoping that someone will help me locate an obit. or an article concerning the 'possible' murder or at least the circumstances surrounding his death. I would think it would be in one of the leading newspapers for Kansas City at the time......first part of Feb 1966 Any help in this research would be deeply appreciated. Thank you.
Patricia, Your secondary find is truly mind-boggling. I had a similar find once. Started out helping someone, turns out we are related only through umpteen marriages, but at least there are some common ties. Isn't genealogy fun? Vanette
