    1. [KSWYANDO] Electric Baths - Kansas City, MO - October 1897
    2. John O'Brien
    3. "The Kansas City Star" (Missouri) Sunday, October 17, 1897 FREE ELECTRIC BATHS. Bathing in electricity is the daily amusement of a number of men in a big office building in this town. Several times a day the men saturate themselves with static electricity, and one of them is getting fat on it. The others haven't been bathing long enough to know whether they will get fat or die. The process was discovered by a man who was paying a doctor $2.50 three times a week for electrical treatment for nervousness. He is chief engineer of this building. One day he crawled into the pit beneath the big belt that draws the elevator and dynamo machinery. When he desired to come out he handed his assistant a metal lamp he was carrying. The assistant got an electric shock that made him see violet stars. After that, the engineer forsook the doctor and saved $7.50 a week. Static electricity is that produced by friction, and is just what the doctor was furnishing from the brush machine at $2.50 a dose. The great belt in its swift revolutions produces and stores the electric fluid by friction. To steal the electricity the men stand close to it holding over it a magnet made of copper wire wound on a spool with both ends of the wire loose. To complete the circuit a copper wire is fastened to an iron water pipe nearby and a silver dollar placed in a loop in the loose end. This is passed up and down the body creating a circuit of the electricity and literally bathing the whole system in the fluid. One of the men who takes these electric baths has relieved himself of rheumatism. Another is treating himself for a nervous disorder, while others take it for a tonic. ====================================================== neirbo7

Fire destroyed the food barns of the Price Blackmore Coal Company, 810-12 South Twelfth Street, Kansas side, last night. The confectionary store at 814 South Twelfth Street, owned by Stephen KIRBY, was damaged by water from a broken hose which had been run through the place. About 7:30 a woman, who was passing by the barns, dropped her ring. Several men who were near, struck matches in order to help her find it. The head from one of the matches fell through a crack in the wooden wall of the barn and started the fire. Four horses that were in the barn were gotten out by the firemen. The damage to both buildings was about $1,400. ====================================================== neirbo7 Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 1. [KSWYANDO] Brings Them Bad Luck - Kansas City - May 1903
    2. John O'Brien
    3. "The Kansas City Journal" (Missouri) Tuesday, May 5, 1903 BRINGS THEM BAD LUCK Most hotel clerks dislike to see the register closed. Some of them would say that their desire to have it remain open is in order that it may be ready for the signatures of guests. But there are other clerks who don't mind telling the real reason. It is because they have a feeling that it is unlucky to close the register. It is a sort of superstition just as other people have against doing things on Friday or beginning a journey on the 30th day of the month. Hotels are not more given to superstition than are people, although there is no room 13 in most of them. While the superstition is not generally well known among people who travel, it does not often happen that a clerk is compelled to rush to the desk in order to prevent a guest from closing the book. That is what happened at one of the big hotels yesterday, and it was because the absent- minded man would have closed the book. The clerk told of the feeling most hotel clerks have about the bad luck that will follow the closing of the register. It is a good deal like the mental attitude of the small boy who crosses his fingers when a cross-eyed person looks at him. "Of course," said the clerk, "I do not think it makes any difference. In fact, I am sure it don't -- but I never allow the book to be closed during my watch if I can beat the other fellow to it. Hotel registers are to be written in, anyway, and a man can't write in them if they are closed." ====================================================== neirbo7

There is Shawnee County, KS, where the state captial of Topeka is located. There is the City of Shawnee, located in Johnson County, Ks. And there is the Township of Shawnee, located in Wyandotte County, KS. The south border of this township is also part of the county line between Johnson and Wyandotte counties. I think Twylla was refering to this township in her message. Note that this township will also appear in the Federal Census as one of the divisions for the census in Wyandotte County. So yes, one must make sure that they are usnign teh correct name for the location they are searching in.
