Hello, I am new to this list. I have been researching my wife's family for the past two years and now I feel like I have a good grip on her direct line, I am trying to go back and fill in details. My wife's grandfather Paul Asbury GROUT was born in Concordia,Cloud Co. KS in 1906 but his family moved to California very soon after (they were there by 1910). His grandparents were Elmer GROUT b. Sept. 26, 1839 Illion, Herkimer, NY d. Mar 5, 1915 (location unk.) and Barbara SMITH b. unk d. unk. m. Feb 10, 1869, Lawrenceville, Lawrence, IL. Their son (Paul's father) was David Theodore GROUT b. Oct 20, 1869, Lawrenceville, Lawrence, IL. They has left Illinois by 1870 - I have a family note that Elmer "moved west". Elmer had a daughter by a previous marriage. Mary Rena Harriett GROUT b. Jun 29, 1866, Wabash Co, IL d. Aug 26, 1926 Atchison Co, MO. As you can see all the children are noted as being born in Washington Co. including one specifically in Hollenberg. I am trying to locate places of residence for Elmer and Barbara after they left Illinois. Due to the births shown above I am supposing that they MIGHT have lived in Washington Co., for awhile. I tried to look at the Washington Co. Census for 1870 and 1880 but the microfilm at my local library is virtually illegible. I do not have access to a printed KS census index for either 1870 or 1880.
