    1. Article: Washington Township Debt: Nov. 23, 1900
    2. The Washington Republican Washington County Friday November 23, 1900 Washington Township Debt. This township owes a debt of $26,000, a railroad bond, and the debt is drawing 10 per cent interest. These bonds will be due in about six years and when due the interest and principal will amount to $46,000. The present tax levy raises about $4,000 each year and leaves about $1,400 in sinking fund each year. Judge FOOTE, of Topeka, who was one of Webb McNALL's road agents was here Tuesday and made the township board a proposition. He represents some New York Bond company and they are anxious to do business in Kansas. He offers to refund the bonds so they will draw but 5 per cent interest, but wants $8,400 to compromise the old bonds and get them released. The new bonds can be paid off at the rate of $3,000 annually and by the transaction the township can save about $3,000 on the whole deal if Judge Foote's proposition holds goods. The old township board did not care to start negotiations at this time, but the matter will be taken up when the new board takes hold of matters after January 1st.
