    2. Jim Laird
    3. The Washington Republican Washington County Friday May 15, 1896 Shocked by Lightning. Last Saturday, Frank DITMERS, living one mile east and two and a half miles south of this place came to town and told of his narrow escape from death by a bolt of lightning. About 10 o'clock he was in the field listing in corn, when it began to rain. Thinking the storm woul dbe severe he quit work, hitched his team to the wagon and was standing up erect just ready to gather up the reins and start home when a heavy bolt of lightning struck somewhere near him, so close that he was stunned and was unconscious for a few minutes. When he came to he was on the ground eight feet one side from where the wagon stood, and his team had run on about 40 rods. Mr. Ditmars' head was somewhat bruised by his fall, his nerves were badly shattered and he had considerable pain in the head, and some of the spine. His call was a close one indeed. He said just a minute before the lightning came he looked into the angry clouds and the thought came to him that there had been no lightning yet.

    1. Article: That Dust Storm: April 3, 1897
    2. The Washington Republican Washington County Friday April 2, 1897 That Dust Storm. This part of Kansas is subject to dirt storms, high wind and hot weather, but last Friday was a weather breaker. Early in the morning a nice shower of rain fell, so the ground was muddy for a time, but about noon the sky looked gray with dirt while the wind was blowing gently from the south. At this place the ground was too damp to allow any dirt to blow, but donw in Oklahoma, or somewhere else, the cloud of dust came. About 4:30 p.m. darkness covered this part of the earth and lamps had to be lighted in stores and dwellings. This darkness lasted about one hour or more, then it grew lighter and a good shower of rain fell. The air was so full of dust that when the rain mixed with it in falling, it became mud, so it was for a time nothing but a shower of mud, splattering windows, houses and everything it touched.

    1. Article: Want To Be Soldiers: Apirl 3, and April 10, 1896
    2. The Washington Republican Washington County Friday April 3, 1896 Want To Be Soldiers. Last Wednesday, Jas. LIPSEY and Chas. BUCKLEY of this city, and Will PRIEST of Greenleaf, all started for Ft. Leavenworth expecting to enlist in the regular army. They had not passed an examination yet so wer not sure that they would be accepted. None of them were of age, but Jas. LIPSEY got a written permission form his fathe rand mother to enter the army, so his chances are far better than the other two. Hard times and no employment was their excuse for wishing to work for the government five years at $13 per month. April 10, 1896 The three young lads who went to Leavenworth last week for the purpose of wearing brass buttons on blue clothes came here Monday with the report that the standing army was large enough and no room for any more recruits. Another reason for not getting in the army was the small pox scare at the fort and at other places. Quarantine measures were about to be extended and no communication allowed for a time between the citizens and soldiers.
